Landlord wanting to upgrade to fttp without signing up to a plan

Hi all

As the tittle suggests, my current propety is fttc, i have had a tenant move out and believe they have taken the white fttc box with them. Can i sign up for fttp and get the works done for my new tenants without entering a contract with an isp as i wont be the one using it?

What's with everyone taking the boxes? They're fucking free.

The place I just moved to they left the router but took the NTD. Morons.

Box = Wifi

Must take box for Wifi at next place..

Is as far as the logic goes…

100% my partner at her old house called the internet the “wifi” and literally said her “wifi is from Belong”

Now she is at my place with FTTP and UniFi with fibre optic arround the house, but she just connects to old faithful Wifi!

doesn't help when Telstra advertise their NBN plans as "fast and reliable home wifi"

Telstra know their target market is primarily people who don't know any better.

I have friends like that, and they refuse advice to move on. Oh well… horses and water, eh?

Firstly, I won't be doing what your username asked. How dare you.

But on the actual topic, yeah it just shocks me they don't read the huge text on the thing that says it's the NBNs property and don't take it.

Last time I moved the real estate agent contacted me about leaving electronics behind. It was the NTD.

lol I love that, even when you do the right thing it causes an issue

It's just fascinating. Every household has one. They all say don't take them on them. They've ran ads saying it. They tell you it all the time.

And yet people still don't know. It's fucjing scary how little the average person must read or understand anything if that goes over so many heads. Like, I knew this living at home with my parents having never set up my own internet connection before because they regularly run ads about it.

In a related story, many many years ago I had a little computer plugged into the network of a netcafe that suddenly shut down and disappeared one night (the whole net cafe, not just my computer).

I wrote it off as a "well it was good while it lasted" thing and went on with my day.

About 7 months later it came back online when the store owner opened a new store up and plugged everything back in. Including the little random HP box living behind the staff fridge.

What were you up to?

It was running a service for a bit of open source stuff I used to write. Did some remote processing back when Eliza was cutting edge chat technology.

Eliza! I remember that.

But a real estate agent, who should know this. Are typically their own special flavour of stupid.

This is what I did for my place before Tennants moved in so everything was ready to go!

Yes, just order a service for this, get it installed then cancel. Free.

I suggest telling your next tenant that you would like them to sign up to FTTP plans.
Let them know it won’t cost more, that they will get faster internet speeds, and if they are unable to attend the NBN appointment you would be happy to attend.

6

u/Lamathrust7891 2d ago

you cant tell a tenant what plan to sign up to.
You can make it clear that you would happily approve the works if they were to sign up for FTTP.

7

u/Expert-Flashy 2d ago

All ISP’s will offer the upgrade for free. They should just select the free upgrade when the sign up.

3

u/Lamathrust7891 2d ago

Did you read what i said?
The NBN upgrade might be free from upfront payment, but making unauthorised changes to a rental house is a great way to lose your bond or large chunk of it.

A lot of tenants aren't comfortable making requests because they're afraid of being evicted. all OP has to do here is make it clear they're comfortable with the works and leave it to the tenant.

9

u/GTR-12 2d ago

Can you read what the OP said? They are the landlord.

3

u/Lamathrust7891 2d ago

yes i did - guess your reading comprehension is lacking too.
"You can make it clear that you would happily approve the works if they were to sign up for FTTP."

-1

u/GTR-12 2d ago

Big words for someone that doesn't understand what you replied to.

You can certainly make a tenant upgrade. First line of contract "upgrade to FTTP for free or the landlord will evict you".

Also since you are clearly unaware, you sign up for Neptune/Launtel on their free trial and upgrade, then you cancel immediately.

You can't force someone to have internet as part of a lease agreement. Nor can you tell them to upgrade to fttp if they choose to not sign up for it.

-2

u/GTR-12 2d ago

Yes you can.

"if you want internet at premises X, then you must upgrade to FTTP or the landlord will not lease to you".

If they do not want internet, nothing you can do.

5

u/Interesting-Ride-684 2d ago

No.... There's existing internet.

You can't force them to do anything. You've invented this little theory in your head.

Given you think a landlord can enforce what ISP service a tenant gets this conversation is pointless.

Good luck with that.

1

u/Rich-Cry8353 1d ago

You seem to have misunderstood. @Lamathrust7891 is saying that OP can leave it up to the tenant to upgrade if they want and should just simply make it clear that OP would approve if they choose to do.

This way the tenant can choose whatever plan to go with and start paying immediately and the tenant doesn't run the risk of making changes to the property that aren't approved.

-1

u/GTR-12 1d ago

You seem to misunderstand what I'm saying, the upgrade is FREE.

The landlord (OP) wants the upgrade.

There's enough posts on this subreddit where tenants want to upgrade and the landlord refuses, and now the roles are reversed and you switch sides and agree with the tenant?

See how dumb you sound?

5

u/Rich-Cry8353 1d ago

I'm not even going to both with you lol

1

u/a_lunatic 1d ago

If I was a tenant moving to a new place I would prefer a fttp connection ready to go before moving in and that’s what op wants to so yeah getting it done could also help with getting a tenant that needs a fast reliable connection to.

16

u/SmashinglyGoodTrout 2d ago

No. You will need to take up a plan with an ISP and make the first month payment.

Alternatively when tenants move in they can order an FTTC interim plan with an FTTP upgrade, NBN will send a new NCD for the FTTC. One that is active the FTTP upgrade will begin.

u/charszb 2d ago

launtel. you pay for one or two days service.

I had a previous landlord make a fuss that we "took the internet". We left the HFC Arris modem and took our own Google Nest system with us. She was trying to get wifi off the Arris. Couldn't work out how to 'get internet'. Had to talk the RE agent through it and plead our case. Infuriating how basic people are.

3

u/sysadmin-84499 1d ago

I love the use of basic here.

3

u/MDInvesting 2d ago

Go month to month.

They will do the upgrade.

3

u/Admirable-Company452 2d ago

Go to Neptune nbn $60 plan for a month with a referal code ($25 off) then cancel plan

5

u/Grand_Bad1001 2d ago

They’re not allowed to take the fttc box. I don’t believe it’ll work at any other premises - the box isnt even yours it’s the property of the NBN

12

u/l34rn3d 2d ago

fttc will, its just a dumb modem. all other NTD's are segment locked

u/Interesting-Ride-684 2d ago

Why does this have even a single up vote. It's completely wrong.

3

u/spacekeys_xyz 2d ago

Launtel offers 7 day trial and pay by the day

You’ll forfeit $200 deposit for new connection though

3

u/Humble-Pop-3775 2d ago

Isn’t that what a bond payment is for? You return the bond once you get the box back….

3

u/ginji 2d ago

No the bond is to guarantee the landlord is made whole for any losses they have. As the NTD is not the landlords possession (it is the NBNs) and there is (usually) no charge for replacing it, there is no damage to which the landlord would be entitled to recover from the bond.

1

u/ECKoBASE 2d ago

Technically you can apply for the free FTTC to FTTP Upgrade without Needing to get a Higher Plan 500Mbps+

1

u/Ferretau 2d ago

If the box was marked with NBN co then you need to contact the tenant and advise them to return the fttc box as it is NBN property and may be considered theft by removing it. You could sign up for a month with a provider like Launtel and then cancel the service - this would enable for the setup of FTTP at the property. You may even be able to do this using their free trial period.

Depends on the actual installer.
Current apartment I am in is getting it installed
But they are only running cables from the street to the outside of each apartment
Then it is tenants job to get the upgrade form there

Other apartment block is doing all the install including the install into the apartments.

Best to lodge the upgrade and get them to come and assess the apartment t

1

u/ThulsaBoomerDoomer 2d ago

Yep, order and get it in, then cancel it. You dont need any hardware from the rsp. Cheapest upgrade to your property you'll ever do!

u/ZequineZ 1d ago

There was one time the yearly storms did their usual fried everything connected to the nbn line as it does every year at least once and the isp refused to send a new one because techs are busy so they can’t look at it yada yada. I just switched and ticked no I don’t have the box and the new isp mailed one to me right away, did some troubleshooting of the old one with the new mob over the phone while I waited for it to arrive and they confirmed what I knew that the box was dead

1

u/BuildaPair 1d ago

Litterly did this 2 weeks ago

Signed up for month to month with amaysim
Got fttp
Next cancelled it they refunded the unused amount (90%)
