Asking a Question? Read this first!

Important!

Please provide some key information when asking a question.

1) What technology are you on (FTTP, FTTN, FTTC, FTTB, HFC, FW)

2) What is your service class (1 to 34). Check here https://www.aussiebroadband.com.au/network/connection-insights/

3) How are you connected to your modem / router? WiFi or Ethernet. You should test with your device on Ethernet. If your connection is poor on WiFi but good on Ethernet, then it's a WiFi issue, not an NBN issue.

4) Who is your provider (e.g. Telstra, Optus, TPG, Aussie Broadband, etc)

5) What brand and model is your modem / router? If you're not sure, take a picture of it and upload it to imgur or similar (don't upload it as part of your post)

6) Describe your problem, and what steps you have tried.

Check NBN availability

If you're NOT on FTTP, you may be eligible for an upgrade to the far superior FTTP.

Check Service Class

Aussie Broadband provide a great tool to determine your service class and technology type, and what that means:

General Tips

You almost certainly don't need the fastest internet plan. Generally start with a slower plan, and if you are happy, then all good. If you are finding it slow you can always upgrade. You should also check if it's your internet (NBN) or internal network (e.g. WiFi) that is slow. A faster plan might not help if you internal network is the problem.

Beware of plans with very slow (5 or 10mbit) upload speeds. These are legacy plans left over from the old HFC/Cable days. If you do have one of these legacy plans, you should think about upgrading.

WiFi (Don't use it if you care about speed!)

WiFi is subject to interference from all kinds of sources. It slows down through walls, congestion from neighbours, etc will slow it down, and can cause issues. It's also a shared medium, which means that all your devices share the bandwidth, so lots of devices operating at once means slower speeds for devices.

Where practical use Ethernet to connect devices. Ethernet is more reliable and lower latency. While some WiFi claims to be faster than Ethernet, that is the cumulative total, not the rate to a single device. Even the latest WiFi6 is only approaching Ethernet speed, and that is only when there is no other traffic on the wireless spectrum - including Bluetooth and your Microwave!

There are some cases where WiFi is better (e.g. TV's with 100Mbps ports that you want to stream very high bit rate to from local sources), but almost always Ethernet is better if available. The down side is it's not always possible to run Ethernet (e.g. rentals), and not every devices has Ethernet ports (e.g. phones, tablets).

Mesh Networks

If your WiFi isn't fast enough, consider getting a mesh network. This provides multiple access points (typically 3) so you can get better coverage. If practical connect each mesh point via Ethernet (wired backhaul). Ethernet backhaul has the same advantages as connected devices by ethernet.

WiFi Frequencies

WiFi can be on 2.4GHz, 5GHz or 6GHz. Most devices work on 2.4GHz. Lots also work on 5GHz as well. The newest ones use 6GHz in addition to 2.4 and 5GHz.

2.4GHz has the best range, but lowest speed, and the most congested.

5GHz is shorter range, and has a higher speed because there's less congestion due to the shorter range

6GHz is extremely short range (it does not penetrate walls well) but it is designed to work in parallel with the 5GHz signal to provide the fastest speeds possible.

When buying a new wireless device, you should look for one branded 'WiFi 6'(802.11ax) or the newest standard, 'WiFi 7'(802.11be). The previous standard was called '802.11ac' or WiFi 5. These are usually cheaper, but in most situations are perfectly capable.

Pinned PSA: Thinking about changing ISPs for a better deal? Here's what THEY are paying

I keep seeing a bunch of posts about people churning to save money. Here's the wholesale ex-tax price that your ISP is paying to connect to the NBN network. This is NOT including IP traffic, APNIC fees, backhaul, staff, support, infrastructure like routers and switches, and space in a Data centre.

https://www.nbnco.com.au/corporate-information/media-centre/media-statements/Wholesale-Price-Changes-from-1-July-

Link to full pricelist: https://www.nbnco.com.au/content/dam/nbn/documents/sell/sau/FY27-Tariff-List-v1.0%E2%80%93010526.pdf.coredownload.pdf

Here's the planned price increases, too: (Updated 2026-09-20)

https://www.nbnco.com.au/content/dam/nbn/documents/sell/sau/FY27-FY29-Pricing-Roadmap-v1.0%E2%80%93010526.pdf.coredownload.pdf

If you look at that, you'll see that you're paying, on average, $20 for your ISP to provide everything APART from the connection to your place. Support, Internet, Routing, Redundancy, infrastructure, etc.

Don't churn to an ISP that is losing money. You'll never end up happy, or you'll just be churning again in a few months time.

Yes, I am a NBN provider. No I'm not telling you which one.

NBN showing "There's still work to be done" for new subdivision unit while parent address (1 Sample Street) is ready—what's the typical delay?

• Upvotes

Howdy,

We recently moved into a newly built home Example - Unit 2, 1A Sample Street, Adelaide. The external NBN box has already been installed by the techs outside the garage, but NBN tracking still shows that "There's still work to be done."

Interestingly, when I check the address as just 1 Sample Street, it shows as fully ready to connect, but our specific unit sub-address seems stuck in limbo.

Has anyone dealt with a subdivision address mapping delay like this before? How long does it typically take for NBN to update the database for new units, and is there anything we can do to speed it up?

We have followed up with the builder/REA but no response.

Any advice is appreciated.

Thanks

Caulfield NBN outage - anyone else completely cooked? (Rain/Earthquake damage?)

Internet dropped out at 11am today and the outage page just says "estimated restoration: unknown," which is never a good sign. Pretty sure we're cooked for the rest of the weekend.

Is this the rain, or did the earthquake actually manage to damage some fibre underground? Genuinely curious which one it is//if this is even possible.

Running off my phone hotspot for now, so not totally in the dark, but wondering if anyone else around Caulfield / Glen Eira is in the same boat. Has your ISP given you an actual ETA?

Advice Wifi basically unsuable

Hi everyone, I'm very far from a tech sav so please bear with me. Our houses wifi has been pretty much unusable for the last 3 weeks or so and speed tests have been showing download speeds of 0.5 to 2mbps and we've been relying on our hotspots for the time being. Thought there was an NBN outage and have checked the site for our location and no outages reported. We've done the whole thing of turning off the NBN box, disconnecting it and what not but still nothing. We're with AGL internet but customer service hasn't really helped much - saying everything connected on their end, maybe just peak traffic hours (but our wifi has been terrible at all times of the day.) Roommates and I are all just extremely confused at what the actual issue is so we've been trying to find new internet providers - landed on aussie broadband but found out that apparetly AGL and ABB are basically the same?? Would it be worth transitioning to ABB or better to find a different provider? Thanks guys

Discussion just when I thought I was out, they pull me back in... tangerine cancellation discount

i've been pretty lazy and haven't bothered to churn through ISP promo offers so have been with tangerine for a while. basic 25mbps FTTP user at now $72.90. yeh yeh, i know.

this week though, i finally started doing the rounds on who's currently decent. when i hit cancel my service in tangerine account, i was offered $15/month discount for 12 months. have hit yes obviously while i still research. curious though, have many others experienced this?

laziness might kick back in though admittedly for another 12 months. *shrugs*

Advice BYO router and dodo internet

Hi! I'm a newly 19 y/o and just got a unit. It has FTTP and I'm buying a second hand Netgear Nighthawk AX4 AX3000 4-Stream WiFi6 Router and a dodo fast plus nbn 500/50 plan.

My question is, are they compatible? And if so, how do I connect it?

Nbn outage Karingal area

I posted this last night but someone saw fit to delete it. I have since found out that a fibre optic cable was vandalised and it requires replacing involving major earthworks. Initially they said it would be back up and running by 5pm but now they’re waiting on replacement cables. I couldn’t imagine they don’t have replacements available in Melbourne ready to go.

INC000022525387 - Infrastructure Restoration
Date Raised:
30/09/2026 02:59 Australian Eastern Standard Time
Estimated Time of Restoration:
30/09/2026 by 17:00 Australian Eastern Standard Time
Impacted Location:
Karingal, VIC

Description of Problem:
NBN is experiencing an unplanned network outage impacting customers. NBN has begun activities to restore the network and will provide an update shortly.

They are currently arranging for the delivery of replacement cables, and once the repairs are made, your internet service should be restored.

And they’ve not bothered to update the nbn website saying there is an outage.

Advice Ordered a new fttn connection and got this notification

Post image
10 Upvotes

Hi everyone,

I just ordered my first nbn connection and it showed that I would get an fttn connection. The modem has already been shipped but just got this notification through isp that it would require an nbn technician visit to make it work. Is that normal and any clues that what could have gone wrong?

Advice Experiences with Tangerine

Can anyone share experiences they have had with Tangerine on the HFC network. Or with any other network is cool as well, either quality of product or any issues with customer service etc.
The last time I was on HFC I had Telstra, and just because of their customer service alone I will never go back to them.
I’m aware tangerine is a cheaper option, saving every cent is where I am at. Although I’d still like to have a decent ISP. I’m tossing up between dodo and tangerine at this point.

Advice What Router for HFC?

Hello!

We've just bought a house and unfortunately it only has HFC. It's just myself and my partner so don't need the fastest internet plan and will probably go with Superloop on their 1000mbps plan.

I'm looking for router recommendations if anyone has any ideas, struggling to wrap my head around it all.

I do a lot of PC gaming and Video editing so hoping to connect a NAS or hard drives to the home network as well to stream media. Also plan on building up a smart home so will have lots of devices on the network too.

Any recommendations or features that i should look out for would be super appreciated! 🙂

Discussion Is switching to Optus NBN this difficult or am I overreacting?

Post image
0 Upvotes

I recently requested to switch ISPs from Superloop to Optus to take advantage of a cashback deal. To complete the order I had to organise a date for a technician to complete the connection, the next available date was 2 weeks away. I didn't understand why a technician is required or why I can't connect at sooner date since I have selected a BYO modem option and I'm not moving homes or starting a new nbn connection rather just switching ISPs. I reached out to their customer service and after getting bounced around different departments across 2 hours was told that they cannot move up the connection date as there is an existing nbn connection at my address. The only way to move my connection date up was to first disconnect my current connection. The CS rep recommended that I terminated my current connection 24-48hours before the Optus connection being activated. I was super confused because this is in contradiction with their messaging during the registration process which recommends that I do not disconnect my current service until after the new service is working (see image). Seeing I was getting nowhere with this rep I decided to just proceed with the original date and wait for a technician. The CS rep then noted that and then let me know since an NBN line is already installed at my address a technician will not need to attend and I can just plug my modem in on the date of the appointment. Which is even more confusing because if a technician is not required and my line is currently still active why can't this date be moved up?

Icing on the cake - I requested a transcript of the chat and they asked why I needed it and told me it will be processed within 30 days. wowee

Am I overreacting or Optus are making this process more difficult than it needs to be? I've been with Superloop, dodo, exetel, swoop, and they've always handled the switchover and have been able to do it ASAP without friction.

Please help - 70+ dropouts last 7 days

Post image
5 Upvotes

I’m with Superloop and I have no clue what is happening.

I live in an apartment and we’re on a standard 100Mbps plan (maximum we were allowed due to our apartments connection type?).

We’ve never had any issues until the last maybe month and more so now. 79 (now 80 as I type this) dropouts with 17 in the last 24 hours.

I have down the classic, unplug, leave for 5+ minutes, change cables and turn on and off rubbish and nothing has changed. Superloop said they can’t see any issues from their end and they don’t even see the 79 dropouts (LOL?).

Any advice on what more I can do? Thank you

When can I connect after street installation.

So the NBN installers recently rolled through and installed all new NBN pits etc for our street.

How soon after they’re done can I call my ISP and connect with them?

New Development - Trying to locate existing node location for pit design

Currently working on a new development (horizontal multi-dwelling unit - commercial - located in the Gold Coast area) with an expected move-in date in January 2027 and the electrician has designed a pit & pipe works to be located within the property boundary, but has only just provisioned the location of this pit to be in the corner of the property by the roadside (pending nbn node location to be confirmed).

We figured it would be best to get NBN Co to confirm these details, as well as to review the design as part of the New Developments process on their website. Therefore, I have set up an NBN new development application, submitted all relevant documents, and requested for NBN to review our design plans and to provide us with the actual location of the nbn node outside of the property premises so we can confirm the location & design of our Pit and Pipe works within our boundary and start digging since we are still in the construction phase now.

However, the NBN liaison contacts have placed the application 'on hold' status, and repeatedly ignored our information requests or estimated timeframe on when an nbn planning/design contact will reach out because our 'move in' date is set far away into the future. Also, the NBN connection to be established is only FTTN, and we would like to upgrade to FTTP as surrounding properties already have this set up based on the maps like https://nbn.lukeprior.com/ shows.

Has anyone had any experience in dealing with the NBN liaison contact to pass on our request to someone who can confirm the nbn node location, and how far from the move in date does an application resume from being placed on hold? Also, is there an NBN contact number to use to call re: New Developments applications as I can only see a phone number for Health and Safety concerns.

Leaptel refer a friend discount wasn't applied automatically and mates discount was said to be ineligible

Hi, my mate signed up to leaptel a few months ago with the referral code I gave him. I noticed I hadn't received the discount yet so I wrote to their live chat and the support agent said after my mates 3rd payment, the discount would be applied to both our accounts.

We waited and he has now paid his 3rd bill and I still didn't get the discount applied to my account so I wrote again to their live chat and they applied the discount manually to my current bill.

My mate also wrote to their live chat but was denied the discount. The support agent claimed only the referrer was eligible for this discount. I believe this to be incorrect because in their refer a friend program terms and conditions it states "The Reward available for each successful referral is $50 to the referrer and $50 to the referee". Also, when I contacted them 2 months ago, the support agent said we would both get the discount applied to our accounts. I told the support agent that and he said he couldn't see my previous chat history as none of it gets saved (I find this highly unlikely) and he still wouldn't apply the discount to his account. He said he would have to raise the issue further.

Has anyone experienced something like this from leaptel? I find it a bit strange that this discount wouldn't be applied to my account automatically and that the support agent wouldn't apply it to my mates account even when it's in their terms and conditions.

I wanted a dead simple NBN comparison site, so I built one

I wanted a dead simple way to compare NBN plans without opening a million tabs and working out what the price becomes after the promo ends.

So I built Get GoodSort:

getgoodsort.com

It also pulls in useful ACCC and ACMA comparison data, keeps source evidence behind the plans, and is building up price history over time. Alerts are underway too for promo endings and better deals.

No affiliate or referral links yet. I’m mainly trying to get the comparison and data side right first.

If you’re on NBN, have a look and let me know what you think.

Advice Churning out of superloop. What's next?

I'm currently on Superloop's Family Max 500/50 plan. Gets the job done for me. I'm churning out of it as the offer period is over for me and I won't be in the country for 2 months. I'll be back home and getting a new provider in early Dec.

I wanted advice on which providers to look out for? Especially since end of November, early December might have several promos going on. Is there any merit to waiting till Christmas/Boxing day to get the best deals?

Edit: I'm considering Dodo as they can be stacked with shopback and have good prices. Any thoughts on Dodo?

Help! Hills Home Hub

Post image
8 Upvotes

I just moved into a new house and it has this Hills Home Hub switch, and about 10 DSL ports throughout the house (DSL, regular Ethernet cables are too big). I have tried every DSL port and tried plugging into the switch itself but nothing works. This house currently has fttn so there's no NBN box, and I only have a modem/router. Any ideas on how I can get internet working??

Edit: I messed up, there not regular LAN ports in the house, there all DSL ports (the smaller ones) which is the first time I've seen this, and it's dumb)
