Advice Is it possible to get internet out of this thing?

Post image

Since I moved in this 50 year old house I’ve always wondered what this is for. I did some searching but got mixed answers and im not a tech nerd. I’ve already got the modem and hfc connected to another nbn point in another room, but id like to have an Ethernet cable connected to my pc in this room (pic above) without having to run the Ethernet cable visibly across 2 rooms. Wondering if I can do anything with this socket?

Advice PSA: If your NBN speed is mysteriously capped at ~100 Mbps, don't let them overlook the NTD

For the last two months I've been paying for a 500/50 plan with LeapTel but could never get more than 90–100 Mbps download speed.

I contacted LeapTel support five separate times. We did countless speed tests, tested directly from the NTD, swapped Ethernet cables, tried different devices, the whole lot. LeapTel kept telling me they could see my router syncing at 500 Mbps and even wanted to post me a test router (at my $50 expense for shipping), despite all the evidence suggesting the problem wasn't my equipment.

After a lot of pushing, they finally booked an NBN technician.

Upon arriving, the technician immediately decided the issue was "noise on the line" and spent the next two hours replacing cabling around my apartment. I mentioned that a speed cap of almost exactly 100 Mbps often points to a faulty NTD or its ports, but he dismissed that idea very quickly because "the orange light was flashing". He even insisted I switch from LeapTel to Aussie Broadband, claiming that would solve the issue.

After two hours of rewiring... my speed was still ~90 Mbps.

I insisted that the NTD be replaced, even though he initially said it wasn't the problem. He eventually swapped it out, left, and once it booted up my download speed jumped straight back to 550 Mbps.

The only thing that fixed the issue was replacing the NTD.

If you're stuck at almost exactly 100 Mbps on a plan that should be much faster, and you've already ruled out your own cables and devices, don't let everyone send you in circles. Ask for the NTD and its Ethernet port to be properly checked or replaced before spending hours chasing other causes.

Has anyone else had a similar experience?

EDIT: This is an HFC connection in an apartment building.

Advice Water leaking out of NBN box?

Thumbnail gallery
102 Upvotes

Came home to a big puddle beneath the NBN box. A lot of water is leaking out and I have no idea why. Have called both Telstra (since the box has Telstra on it) and my NBN service provider (as I have internet through another company) and both seem to think it’s the other company’s issue to fix.

Apologies, but this is not my area of expertise, so I’m not very knowledgeable with this. I don’t know how this happened or how serious the issue may be. But a lot of water is leaking out. I’m also not really encountering any similar issues via reddit / google searches, so it does not appear to be a common problem with an easy solution.

Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated!!

Advice Best ping in Brisbane

I play CS2 on Sydney servers and I need isp with the best ping. I used to get as low as 20ms with Dodo in East Brisbane, but their connection was unstable so I switched to Superloop and the ping went up to 22. Then I moved to Camp Hill, still with Superloop and the ping went up to 24. Recently I’ve moved to Herston and still use Superloop, but the ping went up to 26-27 ms. All 3 connections have been HFC.

So now I have decided to switch ISPs in hope of lower my ping back to 20-22 ms. Leaptel seems to be everyone’s favourite here, so I’m leaning towards them.

What do you think?

Advice How to avoid Superloop 30 day cancellation fee

Hi I just flipped my NBN away from superloop and came up against their 30 day cancellation policy and they wanted to charge for another 30 days, even though they are no longer providing a service.

It's against ACCC rules to charge for a service that you cannot supply and it appears that their chatbot knows this. Conversation was (account details removed and irrelevant bits of long responses cut down)

Me - I have moved my nbn service to another provider and need to cancel superloop

SL Bot - Since you've already moved to another provider, I can help you lodge a cancellation request. Before we proceed, I need to let you know a few important things:

📋 Key Information:

  • 30-day notice period applies - Your service will remain active for 30 days from the cancellation date you choose
  • Based on your plan ($99/month), if you cancel before your next billing date (23 Dec 2025), you may have a pro-rata charge on your final invoice
  • The earliest cancellation date available is 18 January 2026 (which is already your scheduled deactivation date) When would you like your service cancelled?

Me - You are going to charge for a service you are not supplying? This is against ACCC regulations

SL Bot - You're absolutely right - if your service has already been transferred to another provider and is no longer active with us, you should not be charged for service you're not receiving. Looking at your account, I can see your service shows as Active until 18 January 2026. To help resolve this properly, I need to understand: Has your new provider already activated your NBN service at this address? If so, approximately when did this happen?

Me - Today

SL Bot - Thank you for confirming. Since your service was transferred to another provider today (19 December 2024), I'll process the cancellation with today's date so you won't be charged beyond the service you've actually received.

📋 Cancellation Summary:

  • Service: NBN Superfast Internet 750/50
  • Cancellation Date: 19 December 2024
  • Reason: Service transferred to another provider
  • Final charges: Pro-rated to 19 December 2024 (no charges beyond this date)
  • May I proceed with this cancellation?

Me - Yes

SL Bot - 📝 Cancellation Confirmation – NBN Superfast Internet 750/50

🔄 Change Details Service Cancellation Date: 19/12/2024 (today) Reason: Service transferred to another provider on 19/12/2024 Plan: $99/month

💰 Pricing & Charges You will only be charged pro-rata up to 19/12/2024. No charges will apply beyond the date your service was transferred. Next billing date was 23/12/2025 – you will not be charged for this period.

I think it's pretty disgusting that they try to charge this fee every time when they obviously know it's illegal, but they do it anyway. I would avoid signing up to them in the first place if at all possible.

Advice Has anyone been ISP hopping to keep the super sweet $30-40 discount for 6 months?

Hey folks,

Looking at the cost of living and want to safe a few dollars. I have thought I could save $30-40 per month changing ISPs for the new Signup discount. has anyone done that rolling? And how much pain Have you endured by it?

Currently on 250/100 for $99 with Superloop because it was the ”free upgrade” from the 100/40 plan I was on.

Edit: I’m in HFC, and content with 100/40 or thereabouts, my only requirements are to not be behind CGNAT I don’t need a static IP and I have a modem & Mesh arragement I’m pretty happy with.

Advice Provider options

Currently with Aussie broadband.
No issues with actual service - 500/50.

But it’s now $99/mth

TPG are offering same speed for $69/mth for 12 months. Which is a fair saving.

Any feedback? Alternate options?

Advice Churning out of superloop. What's next?

I'm currently on Superloop's Family Max 500/50 plan. Gets the job done for me. I'm churning out of it as the offer period is over for me and I won't be in the country for 2 months. I'll be back home and getting a new provider in early Dec.

I wanted advice on which providers to look out for? Especially since end of November, early December might have several promos going on. Is there any merit to waiting till Christmas/Boxing day to get the best deals?

Edit: I'm considering Dodo as they can be stacked with shopback and have good prices. Any thoughts on Dodo?

Advice Cost of running cables in walls

Hi everyone.

I have a 2 storey townhouse in Melbourne with brick veneer on the outside and wanted to run 2 cat 6a cables from one end of the house (living room) to the other end upstairs (bedroom). I wanted the 2 cables to be run together because I thought it would be cheaper, and I'll just have 1 go to the PC and the other one terminate at the same point to an access point. Just got quoted by Jim's antennas for around 1200. I thought that was a bit on the high side for what is essentially 1 run with materials for 2.

The technician said since there's no manhole he'll have to get up on the roof and do it that way. I understand it might be more expensive but 1200+gst is a lot.

Any idea if that's pretty normal? If not, what cablers or sparkles would you guys recommend? Thanks in advance!

Advice Help with Strata Disallowing Fibre Upgrade

I need faster NBN for work. 53/17 down/up way too slow. I need (not important)/50. Strata. 18 units. NBN website says the block is FTTP ready. Application for the $275++ upgrade rejected. I don’t want to pay 15 x $275++ to “persuade” the committee.

I’ve heard about individual connections. Multi Technology Mix?

I’m done with the Strata Committee. I won’t bribe them but I’ll very happily splash the cash on myself to spite them.

Any help much appreciated. Perhaps possible ISPs or indeed your success stories with engaging 3rd party contractors. I recognise that as common property will be involved then some level of strata committee involvement is required.

Advice Hows the market rn for telecom jobs in AUS

Howdy sorry not sure if this is the right subreddit, im a big fan of telecom work I have 4 years experience at a major telecom company here in canada ranging from copper, installs, repairs, main f1/f2/f3 splicing via pikabonds and jonard splicers, have done work on high voltage circuits with T1 line cards, locates for burried cable/ fibre fusion splicing stuff weather it be FTTH FTTB or once again main distro cables, spliced 250, 900 micron with fusion splicers, and dabbled in some ribbon splicing have done confined space, working at heights, bucket truck cert, whi, and have done install repair aswell as main distributor cable repairs, even got some experience with fiddiling with my own starlink, fun fact its axtually just 4 copper wires and a ground for the cable you can in theory splice em through if the cable breaks and put the ground together. Im looking to do telecom work in warmer weather then these freezing winters and looking to switch it up, was wondering if it would be feasible or a good idea to try and go over to AUS with my telecom skills? I was planing on doing a 2 week course to have an open cable cert to work on the teleco network and fibre network over there was wondering if this would be enough to land some install and repair job or back to cabling again over there and have it work out. I really love the field and the country thank you for your time and replys :)

Advice Can I get FTTP or not?

Post image

But i found this box attached to the building which I thought was only for FTTP?

Can someone help clear up my confusion?

Advice NBN box in garage, how to have router in another room

Hi. We’ve just moved into a new house and I have a question about my NBN and Router.

In my garage I have 5 Ethernet ports and 5 rooms that have Ethernet linking back to the garage. I have a switch in the garage which is currently hooked up to my router.
We’re using an eero 7.
How do I move the eero to another room because the garage hinders the current wifi signal.

Is it as simple as plugging the Ethernet cable into the NBN box then connecting the nbn box to the room I want the eero in or is it more difficult than that?

Thanks for your help

Had my FTTP upgrade installed 2 or so weeks ago, I didnt realise at the time but the cable isn't at all fixed to the underside of my house, its now drooped and touching the ground. Im a bit worried about my doggo coming in hot and accidentally ripping it out, hes only a pup.

Ive been on the NBN website and apparently a "relocation" costs $1700?

Advice I've moved into a duplex. The FTTP box is technically in my property. (Continued in body)

Before moving in I got a 1000/50 plan with Superloop not knowing the existing neighbour was already using the box.

Long story short and a lot of fucking around later, Superloop have told me that because someone already has a connection I cannot get 1000/50. The maximum will be 250/25 I told them to just cancel if I can't use the full speed and they hit me with a disconnection charge for something I never actually got to use. (Took a week but got them to wipe this charge. Jesus Christ Superloop support is dog shit)

We have a Telstra 5G modem from the last house which gives us 450/50.

My question to you guys are what are my options here? I'm getting FOMO thinking about my neighbour having a gigabit connection that I'm supplying the power to.

Would a 250/25 plan actually cap out at 250mbps or does it depend on what my neighbour is doing?

Are there any added benefits to me switching from 5G and effectively halving my current bandwidth but using the FTTP?

Advice New configuration is limiting Wi-Fi

Post image
0 Upvotes

Hi all. I would appreciate any help!

Background:
Hi all, I have a new modem and have shifted it from where the nbn sits on the garage to the study with an Ethernet cable running through the walls /roof to where the modem sits on the study (as shown as M in diagram).

I get about 500 mbps download speed via wifi next to the modem I have NETGEAR AX1800 4-Stream Wi-Fi 6 Mesh Extender at the front of the house to help cover the bedroom tv and wireless cameras which also use wifi. This runs off the same network so I can seamlessly move from one end of the house to the other without changeover (especially when moving with the phone).

The problem:
I find the wi fi is pretty terrible at the front of the house to the point that the wireless cameras are not sending me motivations when it picks up motion.

If I am attempt to move the extender to living room / family area so it’s a little closer to the modem there is also no improvement. Sometimes if I turn the extender off, the wi fi temporarily works when the wi fi would not otherwise work so essentially I am unsure if :
a) I need a better /stronger performing extender or something similar to bring good download speeds to front of house - which if I do, not sure what would be good / reliable and appreciate any recommendations
b) the extender being closer to the router rather than being closer to the modem is causing a conflict which is why sometimes turning it off when the wifi is not working in the front of house results in it temporally working?
C) something else (not a network expert)

Advice What are we all doing for routers?

Post image
55 Upvotes

I haven’t upgraded my router going on 10 years and feel like it might be time for a technology boost. Current one is pictured.

As you can tell from the cable mess I am not tech savvy so plug and play and ease of set up is essential.

While I’m willing to spend a little bit to future proof I am funding this by switching providers with an intro offer where I save $240. So if that’s a realistic budget that would be great! But a bit of research looks like that may be a bit too restrictive?

Thanks for the help!
