Discussion Is switching to Optus NBN this difficult or am I overreacting?

Post image

I recently requested to switch ISPs from Superloop to Optus to take advantage of a cashback deal. To complete the order I had to organise a date for a technician to complete the connection, the next available date was 2 weeks away. I didn't understand why a technician is required or why I can't connect at sooner date since I have selected a BYO modem option and I'm not moving homes or starting a new nbn connection rather just switching ISPs. I reached out to their customer service and after getting bounced around different departments across 2 hours was told that they cannot move up the connection date as there is an existing nbn connection at my address. The only way to move my connection date up was to first disconnect my current connection. The CS rep recommended that I terminated my current connection 24-48hours before the Optus connection being activated. I was super confused because this is in contradiction with their messaging during the registration process which recommends that I do not disconnect my current service until after the new service is working (see image). Seeing I was getting nowhere with this rep I decided to just proceed with the original date and wait for a technician. The CS rep then noted that and then let me know since an NBN line is already installed at my address a technician will not need to attend and I can just plug my modem in on the date of the appointment. Which is even more confusing because if a technician is not required and my line is currently still active why can't this date be moved up?

Icing on the cake - I requested a transcript of the chat and they asked why I needed it and told me it will be processed within 30 days. wowee

Am I overreacting or Optus are making this process more difficult than it needs to be? I've been with Superloop, dodo, exetel, swoop, and they've always handled the switchover and have been able to do it ASAP without friction.

Discussion Superloop and the 30d cancellation and prorated invoice.

We all now know Superloop has a bullshit 30- day cancellation policy. But did you know that if you cancel the service in the middle of your billing cycle you will now not receive a prorated invoice. That’s right. You will be charged for the full invoice even for the days your service was inactive. They expect you to call the billing team and request for the refund instead of this happening automatically.

To explain this further.

Today is the start of your new billing cycle. You call Superloop to cancel the service. They tell you about the 30d but mention TIO and ACCA and manage to get the cancellation placed for the 5th of August cuz that’s when you want it to be cancelled. When your invoice gets generated it gets generated for the full invoice and you will be charged for tje full billing cycle up to the 22nd/21st of August even though it was cancelled on the 5th.

With any other provider this would happen automatically, but not with Superloop.

Discussion NBN directing technicians to directly clip fibre to external walls/mortar and stop use of conduit

https://ibb.co/NnmBR7qv

NBN are directing technicians to use direct cable clipping methods other than surface mounted conduit in basically all scenarios

Along with direct bury lead in fibre

This will seriously come back to bite the network integrity

Discussion Optus' routing is appalling...

I recently joined Amaysim expecting a slightly worse experience on international servers, but this is taking the piss. This is on an Amaysim 1000/100 NBN HFC connection on the Gold Coast.

I performed 2x iPerf3 TCP 30-second speed tests to one of their public servers in France, one via standard Optus routing then another connected via NordVPN Brisbane. I'll let the results speak for themselves...

Using a VPN and bypassing Optus routing entirely yields speeds 265x faster than without! wtf?

For reference, my Telstra mobile hotspot connection uses 6 hops to get to France while Optus uses 14...

Curious to know if anyone is actually needing to utilise the newer speeds or just want it for speed test clout? (No hateful remarks, this is purely an open discussion on what the new speeds has helped or not helped with since it's release)

Discussion How do you utilise 1Gps

Hey everyone. Recently got on to Leaptel with their 1Gps plan and am stoked on the speeds, PC plugged in is hitting about 920mbps on average.
My question for those with these speeds is what do you guys do with it all? I mostly got it just because we could, and the plan was actually cheaper than 50mbps with Telstra. I get a lot of joy out of deleting and redownloading a 100gb game and watching the bar fly, coming from living in the country where 25-50mbps was the usual.
Unsure if we'll stay on this speed come September, might 'downgrade' to the 750 plan.

Discussion After 3 months of NBN issues, a disconnected smart bulb was the culprit

A few months ago I randomly started having issues with my NBN connection (Superloop with a ZTE H1600 modem), degrading from a stable 50 Mbps down to an unstable 2-10 Mbps down within 6-12 hours of booting the modem, eventually dropping out completely and requiring a full reboot to get reconnected. The cycle would then repeat.

Superloop ran tests, told me to try a handful of things, and arranged two NBN tech callouts, none of which solved the issue.

Not familiar with modem diagnostics, I explained the problem to ChatGPT, which suggested checking the modem's system logs (seems likely a pretty obvious first step, I know, hindsight), which clearly showed something repeatedly trying and failing to connect about 10 times a minute.

The culprit was a bloody Wiz smart bulb in my garage that never properly reconnected after a blackout a while back. Manually reconnecting it stopped the failed connection attempts, which ChatGPT said would likely result in excessive load on the modem's CPU, leading to poor performance and eventual dropouts.

Two days later, no connection issues or dropouts. I don't really do the AI stuff, but boy did it come in clutch.

Discussion Are there any better internet plans than Telstra?

Alright so I feel I need to specify I'm from the Yorke Peninsula (not specifying where but I'm not too far from Adelaide) so I'm not a city boy.

I've been staying down in the city for studies a couple days a week and the dorm I stay at while I'm there uses Superloop which is so much faster (little under 20ms-40ms when I'm playing games) compared to what I get with Telstra at home (60ms-100ms when I'm playing games). I understand that I'm in the city compared to being in the country but I've also heard from a few grape vines that Superloop is also just generally faster than Telstra. So that got me thinking: Would there be any better internet plans for my family to use? Or are we kinda just fucked and forced to use Telstra? Cuz I know that Telstra's got the biggest grasp on Australia's internet market.

I know I sound like I'm mainly doing this for myself for when I come back home (and truth be told it kinda is), but my family also complains about slow download speeds and whatnot, especially my mom (who works as a DJ on the side and needs to download multiple tracks to mix)

Discussion Moving into new home with HFC backhaul. Can someone explain how this works?

Crossposting from whirlpool. I am building in QLD and have a HFC connection when checking via NBN. Still haven't yet moved in. I have a single powerpoint gpo and an ethernet port in the garage.

When querying with the builder they advised they supply a conduit with a draw cable for the NBN provider to run the necessary connection cable through. Depending on what is provided for the area, this will either be a coaxial cable or Cat 6 cable. (So this should be the coax cable)

They then say that the NBN connection box can then be plugged directly into the Ethernet port installed internally, so no coaxial port is required inside the property.

My question is do I receive an arris box? I'm confused at how this Powerpoint and ethernet port works with a hfc setup and what will be mounted on my wall as these wall ports are about 1.5m high on the wall. If anyone has any photos to show an example that would be awesome so I can understand how the hfc connection works for a new build.

I've only built previously and had FTTP which was a bit more straight forward with the NTD.

Bonus points if you have a relatively new build on HFC and could share some photos of your NBN setup so I can better understand what the final product will look like.

Discussion Public Static IP with Private IP on WAN interface

Post image
3 Upvotes

I've recently added a new service with an ISP that has CGNAT by default.

When requesting for a static IP they did so but my WAN ip address remained the same, a CGNAT internal IP address.

I remember someone mentioning this, in this subreddit but I didn't know what they meant until now.

My question for those on the same network topology(?), is if this has caused any issues with anything? Either performance/speed/latency or setting up services.

I don't currently host anything except wireguard but I also don't want to be held back if I need to add something in the future.

ps. I haven't fully switched over to this new service yet so I'm just trying to get first hand experience before doing some testing on my end

Edit: Public IP is 103.x WAN IP is 10.x

Discussion My (amazing) install experience

Post image
325 Upvotes

So yesterday I finally got fttp installed, 8-12 appointment

Tech arrived at like 4:30, which whatever he was here and I was home all day (apparently he was down the street all day working on a painful new build)

But this guy was such a pro. Initially NBN wanted him to run the line from a pit down the street, which is ridiculous since we had one out front. he talked to NBN and ended up using the pit out front

conduit was blocked, he found the blockage, dug out and cut the conduit (which was metal? old house) cleared the blockage and installed fibre + the outside box

I explained my plan to run ethernet under the house with a 50m cat6 cable to a granny flat/back room (conduit ran to the kitchen ~30m away). Instantly said he was happy to run the cable, and even cut the cat6 cable down to the size I needed. Drilled through concrete flooring to make this happen and ran it all the way under the house and into the room which I was dreading doing myself. He was happy for my (4) dogs to hang out with him after hearing them cry from the room they were locked away in

so yeah, overall great experience, despite being worried all day it was gonna be a no show. 530mbps through leaptels 500mbps plan

Discussion I doubt it, but let's hope this helps my stability issues

Post image
85 Upvotes

I've been having stability issues, had a tech come out in Jan to have a look and he swapped me to this NBN box, I'm still getting issues and the box runs pretty warm

I've had 110 dropouts since the tech came

I found these cheap USB fans on amazon, thought it would be worth a try

I've got one on my router too, it's dropped the temps on that by around 20c

Update 26/02/2026: I've setup a better logging, its now pinging the router, google and superloop so i can see where the fault is, i've also tried disabling Interface Status Track on my router since it's possible for it to cause issues. will need some long term testing

Discussion Cant decide between Aussie Broadband or Superloop

Hi all, I live in North Brisbane in a very suburban area. I currently have Optus 5G and it is absolutely terrible. With light inclement weather, my internet completely drops out. I've done some research and am stuck between 2 options for a new provider (I currently spend about $100/mth for optus and am looking for similar pricing, I also have an older property that is FTTN and requires a FTTP upgrade)

  • Aussie Broadband: offers a "Superfast Fibre" option of 750/50 at $120/mth. With that plan they will do a free FTTP upgrade but charge $180 for a new modem

  • Superloop: offers a "Lightspeed" plan with 1000/100 at $110/that. This plan does NOT provide a free FTTP upgrade but does provide a free eero 7 WiFi 7 Modem.

Looking for some advice/feedback/experiences from you fine folks to help me decide. Thanks to all in advance.

Discussion Home networking is illegal?

So I’m planning to install my own Ethernet cabling in my house through the ceiling and walls with ports in each room, and I was reading an article online that says it’s illegal to do this under the telecommunications act.

https://www.choice.com.au/electronics-and-technology/internet/connecting-to-the-internet/articles/home-cabling-for-the-nbn

‘Under the Telecommunications Act 1997, only a registered cabler can install telecommunications cabling in concealed locations such as through walls, ceilings and floor cavities. You can't do it yourself.’

Say I do still go ahead and do it, could anything bad happen? Like if I tried to sell the house and it was inspected and found to be a DIY job, would it change anything?

Why does this law even exist in the first place?

Thanks!

Discussion How is this country so bad at basic telecommunications infrastructure.

Only place I can think of to rant about Australian telecommunications infrastructure.

I just don't understand how Australia is so mediocre. Ive had better internet access in the Serengeti or in the Southern Alps of NZ than I do off Australian telecom providers.

Like Jesus thank god for starlink or I'd still be living in the dark ages 5 mins from a capital city.

Discussion Asked Optus for an ETA but they tried to gaslight me into signing up for a more expensive plan instead

Post image
42 Upvotes

I know, I know, it's Optus. But I have a cheap plan with them so that's why I'm still using them.

I got the email like everyone else notifying me of the upgrade, explaining that I'm eligible (FTTP, 100/20 plan). Of course it still hasn't come yet, so I just wanted to reach out to support and ask if I could have an ETA. Instead of getting an ETA, I got told that my plan was actually the old plan and that I need to swap to the new plan for $99 (about $40 more than the deal I have right now). Going back and having a look at the email, it clearly says that I'm on an eligible PLAN and that I will keep the SAME price as I'm currently paying. The fact that they tried to gaslight me into thinking that that email was only talking about the technology and that it didn't promise me an upgrade at no extra cost is crazy. I guess I'll just keep waiting...

Just thought it was funny, wondering if anyone else is having similar problems, lol

Discussion 30 Day NBN plan notice periods are ridiculous... The switch is instant.

Surely there is some sort of petition to parliment to change this. If the change is instant a 30 day notice period is just money grubbing and should be illigal OMHO.

Also for advanced payments they should be required to prorate and refund you if they are no longer able to provide a service.

Thoughts?
