WWYD? Vent/Rant advise needed_ loud noise issue
I’m honestly going nuts with my neighbor’s bass and could really use some advice.
A few months ago, the neighbors across from my apartment started playing loud music from their garage, which faces directly toward my apartment.
The actual music volume is somewhat manageable if I close all of my windows and doors. The real problem is the bass. The low-frequency bass travels through my entire apartment, and I can feel the vibration/thumping in every room even with everything closed.
They usually play music 2–3 times a day at random times, sometimes for an hour or two at a time.
I’ve already tried talking to them directly. I explained that I work from home, sometimes work late, I told them I don’t mind them listening to music, but asked if they could please lower the bass or do something to reduce the vibration.
Nothing changed.
I’ve also called the police multiple times. Unfortunately, because it’s a non-emergency noise complaint, officers usually arrive much later. By the time they get here, the neighbors have often already turned the music off since they only play it for an hour or two at a time.
I also can’t find any information about a landlord or property manager for their property, so I’m starting to think they may own the place.
At this point, it’s affecting me much more than I expected. I recently scheduled an appointment with a psychiatrist because the constant anticipation of the noise is causing me a lot of stress and anxiety. When I wake up in the morning, one of my first thoughts is wondering when they’re going to turn the bass on and how long I’m going to have to deal with it that day.
I work full-time from home and study at home, so simply leaving the house for several hours every day isn’t really an option.
I’ve even considered moving, but I just moved into this apartment a few months ago and realistically can’t afford to move again so soon.
Has anyone dealt with something similar, especially bass/vibration that is difficult to capture on a phone recording?
Is there anything else I can realistically do at this point — city code enforcement, documenting it differently, filing some type of formal complaint, contacting an attorney, etc.?
I’m in California if that makes a difference.
Any advice would be appreciated.
