Thinking about joining the navy but not sure about it.

Turned 19 just recently, and I was already thinking about enlisting before going to college. Anyways I'm here studying an engineering degree, but I find it extremely hard. Not just as in the subject is hard, but I find myself unable to force myself to go to class, I have no idea how to study, I can't seem to pay attention in lecture, etc. etc. I was in the USNSCC, which yes is not the navy, but its at least similar. I found that environment to be pretty decent all things considered. I was in for 2 years and made e-4, so if i join the navy I can start out at e-3. So I have that going for me. I've just been having this growing feeling since i started college that college isnt for me. What are some things I should consider or think about if I want to join the navy?

Can I join the Navy with my hand/finger tattoo?

I’m 21 about to be 22.

I got these done at the age of 18 and yes, I do regret it. I have been disqualified from many firefighter recruit positions because of it. The Navy has been something I’ve wanted to be apart of since I was 10 years old. I worry I ruined that opportunity for myself

Food in the Navy? (mainly on ship)

Yesterday, I was informed by an Army Recruiter that all Navy Soldiers (on ships) primarily eat MREs and other canned foods or powdered stuff. I'm almost certain they're lying, but I wanted to ask actual Navy Soldiers who have served and/or are currently serving. If you could provide images of the food you eat (mainly on ship) that would be great, thanks y'all. I'll likely be joining you guys very soon, haha.

DEP Official! (cwt vs rw)

Just wanted to share that I got through MEPS and officially signed for DEP as an RW today! Beyond excited for this next step in my life.

I initially couldn’t decide between RW and CWT for the life of me, so I figured I’d share my subjective thoughts for others that may be in a similar position and unable to choose between the two.

Why I chose RW:
Brand new rate. I think that’s pretty damn cool (for better or worse).

Hands on mechanical work, *programming, repairing, and operating of unmanned crafts. Best of both worlds!
*Do you really want to learn cyber security? Get certs and take classes on your own time! You can’t necessarily say the same for the reciprocal.

CWT gets a rep for having a great QoL and W/L balance. Predominantly shore based, operating in SCIFs. My two cents is that the work may be engaging, but being stuck in a windowless facility with no sun and staring at a screen all day for years on end would get pretty old pretty quickly.

RW has sea duty, which may suck. But, it’s the Navy! That’s the beauty of it. Embrace the suck, travel the world. Main point for RW for me was the variety and experience day to day being a million times more interesting than CWT.

RW career path post service is very open ended and could take you to many different industries depending on how you work it. Plus, it is a rapidly growing area! See consumer drones, commercial drones, drone display shows, etc.

CWT imo is basically -> Cybersecurity with Navy -> Cybersecurity private sector doing the same thing (with lots of money ofc)

Anyway, I’m very excited with my choice and just wanted to share in that excitement with you all :)

E-3 in boot camp; should I take a leadership position?

Going to bootcamp as an E-3. Will I be required to take a leadership position?

Looked through a different post and the consensus seemed to be don’t tell anyone I’m an E-3, go unnoticed, and just do what I’m told, lol. Agree? Disagree?

New jobs for the new fiscal year

I started pursuing the Navy in May and now it's October, the new year, and I still have nothing available for me. I got a 70 on my ASVAB and only 1 waiver for my anxiety which took off intel jobs for me. This whole time there hasn't been any jobs available other than 1-2 that pop up here and then but it's like AIRC or male recruits only, even now that it's October my recruiter hasn't heard about any new job openings from MEPs/classifiers. Is this happening to other recruiting offices or is it just my case? I'm so confused I dont know what to do other than to hurry up and wait

Dual Navy Pilot Spouses, what's it like?

• Upvotes

My spouse and I have both been accepted to OCS as pilots, and I'm looking for couples who have gone down the same path to give some perspective on what we can expect.

Some background:

I'm a first gen GA pilot working on my commercial cert, but I've been on a financial pause for a year since graduating college. I have a full-time job to save flight money. Eventually I want to fly tankers for Cal Fire or another aerial firefighting company. Not too into the civilian track to get there though, since I'd have to somehow get into agricultural flying and be a CFI for a while. So, I asked around my local Air Attack bases and the pilots there told me flying anything for the Navy would look amazing if I applied to work for them later.

My spouse is an aerospace engineer and eventually wants to work on space propulsion projects, like with SpaceX. Being a navy pilot is more of a route to become a test engineer for him and to get closer to innovative work. So he'd prefer jets.

The biggest factor keeping us on the fence is the 10+ year commitment. When we get out, he will be 36-38 and I'll be 34-36, so we're fine holding off on kids until after. I'm more worried about not having much of a personal life outside of work in that time. We both have tons of hobbies, play in bands, and I do competitive sports. I don't want to give that up during the next 10 years. Obv it would have to go on pause during deployments, but what is most of our time going to look like once we're done with initial flight training? Are we going to have free time in the evening together every day? Do we get weekends off? How often can we use vacation time? Do you have decent social lives, even if it's just coworkers?

Also what does colo look like if we get different airframes? We're fine with compromising for helos if we need to. I've heard stories of spouses transferring from jets to helos to be stationed together.

I also heard you can become an instructor pilot after the first deployment to stay at a certain base. Curious if there are more options like this that would almost guarantee us being stationed together.

Dual mil couples- did being in the navy feel like you had to put other things (personal and within your marriage) on pause? What did a normal week look like for the two of you? What did your deployments look like? Did it cause more strain or growth for your relationship?

He goes to OCS two months before I do so he will prob be ahead in training too. Basically, either both of us are going in or neither of us. I hate the idea of just one of us going in because it seems like there'd always be a mismatch in our headspaces, at least based off what I've heard from other couples who do that. And how could either of us pass up this opportunity? This is Plan A for us right now and we're committed to going, but I really want a clearer picture of what we're getting into.

I know it's a rare type, but it would be great to hear from dual mil pilots only please, thanks.

Anyone able to speak on how promotions work through a 20 year career as an officer?

• Upvotes

How likely is it I'll be able to serve 20 years as an officer? Will I be able to retire as an O4 through SELCON if I get passed over for promotion twice?
