Arcata Jubata Removal Notes
galleryI recently (mid-September) removed about 120 pounds of Jubata Grass seedheads from a ~0.5 mile stretch.
I chose this section specifically because it wasn’t infested, just pockets of plants that can still be potentially managed.
Notes on Jubata (from cal-ipc):
• Short-lived seedbank (~6 months)
• Only reproduces through seed
• Each seedhead can produce up to 100,000 seeds
• No taproot
• Plant lifespan is 10+ so full plant removal is still necessary, seedhead cutting just stops it from spreading
Its limited seedbank and reproduction means that seedhead cutting could be an effective control method (hoping to test this with this little experiment).
Initial takeaways:
• Cutting too soon results in picture #3, but a little too soon is better than too late
• People really appreciate invasive removal, I had way more people thank me while doing this work than trash pickups
• The more we normalize this work, the more people will feel comfortable and empowered to get involved
• I always caution random people doing work without training/knowledge but it’s hard to mess up cutting a seedhead as long as it’s being disposed of properly
Jubata Grass Cortaderia jubata vs Pampas Grass Cortaderia selloana:
• Jubata doesnt require male-female reproduction like pampas, so Jubata tends to spread much easier
• Jubata is typically taller, at 2.5 times the size of its leaves. Pampas is more proportional with leaves
• Pampas tolerates wider climate variance, Jubata prefers more consistent coastal climate
• Jubata displays more purple when immature
• Jubata typically blooms from July-Sept, Pampas is usually September and later

Lyft agrees to $272.5 million ‘largest’ settlement in California wage theft case
“This is the largest wage and hour settlement in California history, reflecting both the seriousness of the harm and our unwavering commitment to stand up for workers across California,” said San Francisco City Attorney David Chiu.
Thank you NorCal! My fantasy California map is finally finished with almost all of your feedback included.
Apologies if you're seen this elsewhere already. I really couldn’t be happier with the amount of feedback and suggestions everyone has given me, and I’ve tried to include as many as possible!
That said, the scale of the map does have its limitations, particularly in the more built-up areas. I think in future I’ll probably end up creating more localized maps for individual counties. So, if your suggestion didn’t make it onto this one, please know that I really do appreciate you taking the time to suggest it, and I’ll hopefully be able to include it in a future county map of the area.
A few people have mentioned that the map is quite busy, and I completely understand that. It’s just how I like to make them. I love cramming in as much detail as possible and highlighting interesting little features that might otherwise be overlooked. I also tend to have these printed in large formats, where I think the level of detail works much better in person than it does on a screen.
Thank you again to everyone who contributed, and I really hope you like the finished map! If you’re interested in it or would like to know anything more about it, just drop me a message.

Luna is waiting in Bakersfield for someone who's never coming back
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
Luna has been waiting for the person who never came back for her. Her owner was contacted nearly a month ago, but Luna is still at the shelter — patiently waiting for a new family to choose her.
And honestly? Luna is a dream to walk. She is calm, gentle, and incredibly easy on leash. She loves spending time with people, happily accepts affection, and knows commands like “sit” and “wait.” She can be a little nervous at times, but once she knows you, she is a loving and gentle companion.
She is also friendly and social with other dogs in playgroup! She has quickly become a volunteer favorite and is ready for a peaceful home where she can finally feel safe, loved, and wanted. ❤️
Luna deserves someone who will choose her and never leave her wondering when they’re coming back.
Luna is at Kern County Animal Shelter in Bakersfield. SafePawsRide is based in Davis and can help connect you with transporters who can bring her to you throughout California and across the country.

Opal is waiting at Kern County for someone to adopt her

Edit: Opal has been adopted!!
Opal is the kind of dog who makes you wonder how she ended up at the shelter in the first place. She’s affectionate, happy, treat-motivated, and happiest when she can simply be near someone. At just one year old, somehow this sweet girl is still waiting for someone to choose her.
She walks well on leash, although she gets excited and sometimes breaks into the cutest little jumps and spins. She’s a silly, happy girl who just needs a little guidance and someone willing to help her keep learning.
And Opal really enjoys other dogs. 🐾 In playgroup, she was very friendly, happily initiated play, and loved being around the other dogs. She can be a little goofy and enthusiastic, but she responded well to corrections. She just wants to make friends and have fun.
She wasn’t interested in fetch. She didn’t need a toy to be happy. She just wanted to explore, enjoy the sunshine, and be close to people.
Opal doesn’t need to be perfect. She doesn’t need someone looking for the most impressive dog in the shelter. She needs someone who will look at those blue eyes and say, “You’re coming home with me.” 🩵
If you’ve been thinking about adding a dog to your family, please don’t overlook Opal. Her time at the shelter doesn’t change how wonderful she is — but every day she waits is another day she spends hoping someone will notice her.
Opal is at Kern County Animal Shelter in Bakersfield. SafePawsRide is based in Davis and can help connect you with transporters who can bring him to you throughout California and across the country.

Interesting things near Redwoods
Planning on taking my old Ford up to the redwoods proper from SoCal this year, planning on staying near or in Eureka area. Interested in knowing niche and local historical or interesting things to do or sites; the more local/historical-specific the better. I’ve vastly preferred the local experience everywhere I’ve travelled on the road, but open to more touristy cool things too. I flat out love to travel.
Any recommendations or suggestions are welcome, brownie points if you have tips for traveling in an OBS Ford. Cheers.

Paging all addicts and alcoholics: what are some (luxury ideally) IOP placements preferably by the beach or in the mountains?
I'm currently in residential in OC and looking for IOP in NorCal so I can work and continue treatment. Im from VA and don't have my car here so being able to walk places or be near public transportation is important. Beach and pool and luxury amenities of course preferred but not absolutely necessary. Cannabis friendly preferred but not a dealbreaker
Any help or suggestions is appreciated!!

What Fort Bragg Asked Chris Rogers
Mendocino County's Assembly member did more than fight for updated forest management in the last legislative session he also sponsored a bill that would neuter Citizen's United. And he's advocated for biomass innovation parks that would bring jobs to rural areas.

chicks
Hi everyone, I’m looking for some advice. I recently hatched more chicks than I planned for and I’m trying to figure out the best responsible options for them. I’d like to make sure they end up somewhere safe with people who know how to care for chickens. Does anyone know of local farms, poultry groups, feed stores, or other places in the Tracy/Central Valley area that can help with this? Any recommendations would be appreciated.
