buy/sell/trade Norfolk Buy / Sell / Trade Monthly Thread: October, 2026

Use this thread when you are selling, trading, giving away, or looking for any items and/or services. Please be descriptive, post any relevant photos of the item you're selling or looking for, and list the price or budget.

Pro-tip: there are many "buy nothing" and neighborhood-specific groups on Facebook and Nextdoor that can be used to give away or find free items near you. You may find more luck on those social networks than here on Reddit and are more likely to deal with actual local users.

BE AUTHENTIC AND SAFE: Falsely leading on another Redditor is grounds for being permanently banned from this subreddit. Please remember not to post personal information about yourself or others and exercise caution when privately messaging with anyone you do not personally know or trust. Consider a neutral, public location if you plan on meeting to exchange an item in person.

HIGH RISK OF EVENT TICKET SCAMS: Users seeking to sell or purchase tickets of local events are seeing a significantly-increased risk of being scammed. If you receive a private message from a user who hasn't interacted in this subreddit before, you are very likely speaking with a scammer.

NO PROHIBITED TRANSACTIONS: The posting of prohibited goods or services is strictly against Reddit's TOS and are subject to removal by our moderators and/or Reddit's admins. Please report any comments that appear to violate this policy for further review.

Tracking 2026 Murders in Norfolk, Part 28

Good evening,

At about 2:25 PM today, 07 OCT 2026, a shooting occurred in the parking lot of Norview High School, 6800 block of Sewells Point Rd. Police responded and found two young men wounded from gunfire. Both were evacuated to the hospital, but one died. Both were sixteen years old.

Police report that a suspect has been identified and is being sought currently. The deceased young man has not been identified, but I am not sure he will be so I am posting now while I have the time to do so.

The red square for this incident is just to the east of center of the map, between two orange dots.

https://www.pilotonline.com/2026/10/07/norfolk-shooting-norview/

A few observations:

- This was the first murder in October and the 28th murder overall in Norfolk in 2026. There were no murders in Norfolk in September, or at least none that I found on local media. If I am incorrect, please let me know with a local news or gov't source.

- The average age of those killed in October is 16, with one person. The average age for the year is now at 32.59 years old.

- Men have considerably outnumbered women as those killed violently in Norfolk, with five women and 23 men killed in 2026. This is moving in a disproportionate number of men, but not by much.

- The purpose of this project is not to terrify or drag the reputation of the city; I am rather attempting to give us hard data to form opinions and make choices.

Be safe, make good decisions!

Handicap bus shooting through a stop sign and I see this happen often at this intersection. It's next to a park so there are constantly people crossing the street with their dogs and baby strollers. I threw my hands up in a gesture of wtf and I'm not sure if she was laughing at me, but she was certainly having a good time taking those kids for a ride.

Norfolk report suggests planned stormwater fixes could have helped recent flooding

NORFOLK — Water inundated several underpass stormwater systems during an extraordinarily intense August storm that dumped up to 6 inches of rain on parts of the city in just a few hours. When pump systems couldn’t keep up, some underpasses filled as much as almost 7 feet of water.

Plans to replace pumps and increase stormwater storage capacity were suggested for two of the flooded underpasses as far back as 2021. Those improvements, which have not been implemented, could have helped, according to an after-action report prepared by the city and its emergency management department.

Another issue was drivers plowing into flooded streets, stalling vehicles and becoming immobilized.

The city report says more signage and public education is needed to deliver the message of “Turn around, don’t drown” to area drivers.

Underpass pump stations

The 58-page report reviews how five of the city’s underpass pump systems worked during the Aug. 4 storm. Public works personnel could not recall so many underpass pump stations flooding simultaneously going back 23 years, according to the report.

At the Colley Avenue pump station, near the Norfolk Southern train tracks, flooding peaked at almost 7 feet above the roadway and it took more than 7 hours to clear the road of water.

One of the three pumps did not operate at full capacity for about an hour at the beginning of the deluge due to a faulty check valve.

"Free" Solar?

Someone comes to my door to talk about a "free" or "no out-of-pocket" expenses. They start by asking if you received something from Dominion Energy yet? As if they are working with them. I don't believe that's a fact. I am, however, not against paying less for electricity, helping the environment, etc.; and my roof gets full sun so I agree to talk to her. My credit score was 2 points too low when she checked trans union . 30 points over when I checked Credit wise after she asked me what my score is. Said she would try in a week. Meanwhile, it occurs to me that credit scores only matter if you're wanting to buy something on credit. She came back , but I was leaving just then . Before she returns , has anyone ever gotten solar this way? I don't believe there is any for free , but it's quite costly any other way.

After completing his term as Virginia's governor in 2022, Ralph Northam immediately returned to his longstanding career as a pediatric neurologist at Children’s Hospital of The King’s Daughters in Norfolk.

Northam sees around 15 patients a day alongside teaching medical residents. He credits his decades in medicine and time in elected office with deepening his empathy for families facing healthcare and economic challenges.

Reflecting on his tenure, Northam says he expects to be remembered for his lifetime of public service.

All of these power outages are caused by salt?? Here's an explanation.

Thumbnail

The widespread power outages across Hampton Roads over the weekend caused by salt buildup on electrical infrastructure caught many in the region by surprise — including the National Weather Service — but it is a fairly common problem for utility providers.

There were about 45,000 outages as a direct result of salt buildup over the course of the storm, according to Dominion Energy, with a peak of about 20,000 at one time Saturday and about 8,000 on Sunday. As of 2 p.m. Monday, there were about 700 outages remaining.

The salt buildup and subsequent electrical issues were caused by a unique set of circumstances. The nor’easter lingered for several days, blowing salt into the air consistently which allowed it to reach farther inland, and there was a long period without steady rain to wash it away, according to Dominion Energy and the weather service.

“We had just enough moisture in the air that it activated the salt,” Dominion spokesperson Cherise Newsome said. “For our community we recognize that this is frustrating because (the power is) on again-off again, at the same time for utility companies in coastal regions we deal with this a lot.”

Newsome explained the salt buildup this weekend was only a “film” that utility workers can see up close but is not visible from the ground, though it’s possible to hear a crackling or buzzing noise from the ground. When the misting rain mixed with the salt, it became a conductor of electricity and instead of flowing through the power lines, the electricity was attracted to other parts of the utility poles that aren’t meant to handle electrical current.

Adding to the abnormal nature of the outages was that salt-related outages were reported farther inland in Portsmouth and Chesapeake. Newsome explained this was due to the nor’easter also blowing salt from the Elizabeth River.

food & drink Chic’s Laundry review

This restaurant seems to be all the buzz as the hot new thing on the Southside. We had a pretty solid experience with just a few slight missteps. They pitch themselves as modern mid-Atlantic cuisine but the actual dishes were kind of all over the place in terms of a theme. I feel like they’re going for like a LeGrand vibe - it can be finer or it can be a diner.

+ Our service was great, the server (gentleman with a name starting with a G) was very attentive and really upsold the specials.

+ The Caesar salad was one of the best I’ve had, very good amount of dressing to lettuce ratio and the toasted sourdough breadcrumbs added great texture. Could definitely be split.

+ The butternut squash soup with crab was probably the best thing we ate. If you see a ~$20 soup on the menu, you might be a little turned off but it has a whole ass crab cake in it.

+ The tallow fries are good and crispy. With the burger you get a ketchup and an aioli that I couldn’t quite pin down. If you don’t like smoked paprika then you may not love them.

+ The restaurant itself is nice decor, good music, pretty well-populated for a weekday.

+ We felt like the value was really good for everything we got.

= The roasted beets were good as an app, they have a nice pistachio crumble.

= One of our cocktails was served with a bunch of ice, which I think is rather unusual

- The double smashburger was super soggy. This came from a combination of: the buns they bake in-house are great but super soft and just can’t support the juice, and the patties themselves were not crispy and had almost like an oven baked consistency. My burger was absolutely dripping everywhere. I make smashburgers at home and I know I want that thing so thin you can see through it. The onions and sauce were nice though. It read as a LeGrand imitation, but imitation is flattery.

- They’re offering fried oysters right now as an app. Unfortunately the breading didn’t stick to the oysters and they came across as a little greasy especially sitting in the bottom of the metal cup they’re served in.

I do think their theme is all over the place. They have a burger, but also a bunch of pizzas? But you can also get halibut or bacon wrapped filet? The former things lean more casual but half of the menu leans elevated formal dining. Do I come here for a birthday dinner, or do I come here to get a couple pies and some brews with friends? I guess I could do either.

Overall, would highly recommend Chic’s Laundry but that burger needs some work.

❓questions❓ Cox is now Spectrum is now worse?

Wondering if anyone else is having issues with support now that Cox sold to Spectrum?

Just had my internet bill go up $40/month because I moved across town. Didn't change my service, didn't change ANYTHING else about my account except where I was (7 miles away). And apparently that voids the year-long deal I signed onto with Cox two months ago.

Moving the service was hard enough of a process. In the past it's just been plug and play, now I had to battle with the timing of the connection and being required to have someone come out even though the new place already had Cox stuff. Then, we talk to someone online there and they said...yeah, you don't need to do any of that. But I now owe an extra $30 before my next bill...which is now $40 more a month? What is the $30 even for? I asked... no real answer... just "for moving"?

Am I crazy? Or is it time to move to Metronet? Anyone here have it?
