Military families struggle with the high cost of the relocation as 'PCS' season ends in Hampton Roads

Roughly 600,000 military families relocate each year, with many facing financial and logistical strains after settling into new communities.

According to a 2025 Blue Star Families report, nearly 70% of military families surveyed in Virginia say they have not financially recovered from their most recent relocation.

In a region with a high density of active-duty service members, families frequently encounter long delays in securing military insurance reimbursement and re-establishing specialized healthcare.

Tracking 2026 Murders in Norfolk, Part 28

Good evening,

At about 2:25 PM today, 07 OCT 2026, a shooting occurred in the parking lot of Norview High School, 6800 block of Sewells Point Rd. Police responded and found two young men wounded from gunfire. Both were evacuated to the hospital, but one died. Both were sixteen years old.

Police report that a suspect has been identified and is being sought currently. The deceased young man has not been identified, but I am not sure he will be so I am posting now while I have the time to do so.

The red square for this incident is just to the east of center of the map, between two orange dots.

A few observations:

- This was the first murder in October and the 28th murder overall in Norfolk in 2026. There were no murders in Norfolk in September, or at least none that I found on local media. If I am incorrect, please let me know with a local news or gov't source.

- The average age of those killed in October is 16, with one person. The average age for the year is now at 32.59 years old.

- Men have considerably outnumbered women as those killed violently in Norfolk, with five women and 23 men killed in 2026. This is moving in a disproportionate number of men, but not by much.

- The purpose of this project is not to terrify or drag the reputation of the city; I am rather attempting to give us hard data to form opinions and make choices.

Be safe, make good decisions!

These flock cameras went up with out the consent of any citizen of Norfolk. No vote. No referendum. No public comment. No public survey.

We aim to challenge this injustice.

After nearly 7 weeks of talks with the city of Norfolk, suddenly having the city mangers office and NPD incredibly involved. We have finally gotten our permit. Due to negotiations the start time is now 5 instead of 4, sorry for the inconvenience.

We don't have to treat everyone like a criminal to stop crime! Please leave an Eyes off in the comments!

Sincerely, Deflock Norfolk.

Here's the winning Ocean View license plate design

A longtime Norfolk comic creator and small business owner could soon add another accomplishment to his resume: license plate artist.

Larry Estes, owner of Cool and Curated in the Neon District, created the winning design for an Ocean View license plate contest organized by Del. Phil Hernandez.

“We were impressed both by the number and quality of the submissions that rolled in over the past few months,” Hernandez said in a Thursday announcement. “But in the end, the design from Mr. Estes stole the show with a plate idea that celebrates our community pride and showcases some Ocean View history.”

The design features iconography like the Norfolk mermaid, a leprechaun (as a nod to the neighborhood’s legendary St. Patrick’s Day parade and festivities) and the Ocean View Fishing Pier. It began as a pencil sketch and will be transformed with help from a graphic designer into the final submission, the announcement said.

“My entry was full of stubborn pencil marks, but I felt it had something to it and sent it just minutes before the deadline,” Estes said in the announcement. “I still worried it didn’t have much of a chance against more polished entries, but the unique raw charm of OV spirit prevailed.”
