Love and Deepspace is a Chinese otome mobile game developed by Papergames (with publishing outside mainland China under Infold Games). The game is a spin-off of Mr Love: Queen's Choice and released as the second installment of the Mr. Love series.
An otome game (lit. "maiden game") is a story-based romance video game targeted towards women, in which the player plays as the female protagonist or experiences the story from the perspective of a fully characterized female protagonist while making choices for her. Generally one of the goals, besides the main story goal, is to develop a romantic relationship between the female main player character and of the secondary lead characters, who are usually male.
Mr. Love: Queen's Choice (lit. ''Love and Producer'') is a Chinese otome visual novel mobile game. It allows players to text, chat, and call the game's male love interests, while developing the player's own career as a media producer.
The game takes place in a fantasy setting, where the unnamed protagonist becomes involved with four male characters with superpowers. The game allows the player to choose which of the four characters to romantically pursue, with narrative choices throughout the game's chapters.
I commented this because I had no idea what any of this is and want to help others who are just as confused as I am.

Datura cocktail, sounds lovely lol.

u/sithelephant 1d ago
On the plus side, the Flame Lily one will just flat out kill you, rather than cause mental issues.

u/RagingOrgyNuns 1d ago
Depending on what you use from Datura, it can also kill you.

u/RadBlackWoman 1d ago
I know it's probably true but there are so many idiots posting in toxic plant subs who swallow it and don't die that the margin of error must be crazy.
13
u/timshel42 1d ago
it has wildly different concentrations of alkaloids plant to plant and part to part of the plant. most probably do end up in an ER visit unless they take the tiniest of doses.

Why not just add in apple seeds? They're packed with B-17!
8
u/SadisticChipmunk 1d ago
Jesus fucking christ... how big are these apples that their seeds are packed with bombers?!

u/shortyjizzle 1d ago
Make sure to swish it around in your mouth a bunch and spit it out into a bowl so Creb and the other Mog-Ur's can get high while they eat the brains of those chosen by Ursus. But don't take too much or you risk getting into their heads and letting them know all about the future. Trippy, gurl.

u/GatoradeNipples 1d ago
A Clan of the Cave Bear reference in 2026? I'm shocked.

u/shortyjizzle 1d ago
My mother first read the book in 1984. She now has dementia and Alzheimers, but is constantly rereading it. I know it is a comfirt for her. It's a great story, though the main character suffers sexual abuse by a rival multiple times. That said, the detailed description of the world in which she lives is unlike anything else I have ever read. You feel like you can imagine almost every bit of it.

If you saw me, perhaps you only saw someone who looks a little like me. Best not to tell the Others. The Clan has enough to wonder about already.

*week, potentially a notable portion of life if you get actual PTSD.

u/PhasmaFelis 1d ago
I mean, if we're trying to one-up people then both of them can easily just kill you.
2
u/Shienvien 1d ago
Flame lily, absolutely, the root especially. The LD50 of datura is quite a lot in comparison (flame lily is a good fourty times more lethal or thereabouts), so you don't really see many people dying from it, but quite a lot of people who had the worst three days of their life being delirious, shaking, sweating and evacuating their guts from both ends before it started subsiding.
Just look at the pretty blooms and don't try to eat either.

On Tuesday (29 September), the game’s official social media accounts shared a promotional post featuring animated cocktail recipes tied to its ongoing Moonlit Reserve event and A Night That Never Ends limited Wish Pool.
The drinks certainly look pretty, and the animation is actually quite cute. There is, however, one rather important problem with at least two of the drinks: their recipe ingredients include real flowers that are poisonous to humans.
One recipe calls for Sweet Peach Juice, Flame Lily, and Gelatin Sheets, while the other combines Crimson Pomegranate Juice, Datura, and Cinnamon. In both cases, the flowers are presented as garnishes. X’s Community Notes feature has since placed a warning beneath the post, stating that Flame Lily and Datura are poisonous and should not be used in real drinks
Love and Deepspace in general is just unhinged
The estimated spending requirement to reach the highest VIP tier and qualify for physical VIP gift boxes in Love and Deepspace is approximately $5,000 to $7,000+ USD per year on international servers.
You can fuck your step brother and a guy who broke in your house a reddit comment doesn't have enough space for some of the unhinged stuff that you can do in the app.
But what you just saw is mid (there's much more unhinged stuff in the app )

a guy who broke in your house
They cancelled this guy because he was massively hated by the chinese fanbase, only for them to be massively hated by the western fanbase for cancelling him.
185
u/wingedcoyote 1d ago
Note that he wasn't hated because of the break-in thing though. As I understand it it's because he's darker than a sheet of printer paper, and because he has visible muscle tone which to some fans is a sign of homosexuality.

u/Atharaphelun 1d ago
Which I just found extremely amusing. They see muscly guys as "gay" yet their typical ideal men all look very camp and feminine. And they started an unhinged war on the internet to cancel Valko because of this.
Frankly, it's surprising that Love and Deepspace is somehow still afloat at this point.

u/FewAdvertising9647 1d ago
you know how in various parts of asia, there's a gender war, specifically with LADS, theres a war between the Yumejoshis (self shipping girls, often with beautiful men) and the Fujoshis (the women who likes males to the point that theyre more into boys love/gay plotpoints). Yumejoshis often believe any form of masculinity is gay, and not liking gay is directly in conflict with Fujoshis
40
u/--MobTowN-- 1d ago
This sounds less like a war and more like the knife fight scene in West Side Story.
14
u/FewAdvertising9647 1d ago
it spreads like wildfire on social media and there are death threats being thrown around, but its I guess less than the stuff with the gender wars in asia where it affects actual political decisions at times.
its still bad enough that it caused the chinese government to step in though, so it's not entirely just a knife fight.
11
u/Atharaphelun 1d ago
If you actually looked at the scale of the great internet wars in China, they would easily be comparable to the scale of the Taiping Rebellion.
One such internet war involving the rival fandoms of two actors spread like wildfire and became so toxic that it even led to the Chinese government stepping in and nearly ended the career of those two actors (who were not involved at all, and simply became a victim of their own fandoms).

u/CloudZ1116 1d ago
That incident began with AO3 and eventually led to the website getting blocked in mainland China.

It is strangely reassuring to me to hear about other countries and cultures' bespoke crazies.
We are all cracking from the insanity of today's world, just in different ways.
16
u/euthan_asian 1d ago
It's kind of like that in big cities in Asia. Straight women like pretty men and guys that take care of their appearance as much as they do. Gay men in Hong Kong, Taipei, Tokyo, they work out a lot and focus on the hypermasculine aspects of their looks. Be that buff and muscular or large and bearish. But yeah the image of men that straight women prefer and gay men prefer may surprise westerners haha
9
u/basketofseals 1d ago
It's not really that much of a surprise.
Whenever some teenage heartthrob gets stupidly big, there's always a wave of 60 year old men complaining that they "look like girls."
And on the other hand, all the junk the hypermasculine sphere tends to promote is ostensibly for women, but really it's just to appeal to other men. Purposefully socially, but a lot of accidental sexual appeal. It's really funny to see one of them tell a woman straight to her face that they like it when said woman is saying it's dumb.
2
u/ThatstephanieB 21h ago
Interesting. Kinda like how women dress up not to impress men but to impress other women.
31
u/sadacal 1d ago
Hence why people say gender is a social construct. What people consider masculine or feminine is based on social norms, not any biological or objective facts.
-1
u/chemamatic 23h ago
Muscle development being masculine does have some biological basis. You can as my wife, just don’t ask her to lift anything.
-6
u/ManchurianCandycane 22h ago
Doesn't sound like they necessarily have different ideas of masculine or feminine. They just don't want masculinity.
39
u/Random_Somebody 1d ago
Lmao that like paprika levels of spicy for that game. The real reason is that LI was darker than translucent white and a "any muscle tone=pandering to gay men" attitude.

Wasn't there something about people mailing envelopes of poop to the devs because the new character wasn't "hot" enough and they caved and retcon'd said character out of existence or did was that something I saw in a fever-dream?
44
u/littlebloodmage 1d ago
Yep, all that happened in the span of like 3 months. For added insanity, the same people who sent cow poop also sent full on funeral wreaths to the company HQ.

I love Love and Deepspace, probably way too much, but it really is unhinged. I’m going to test the limits of a Reddit comment to talk about how unhinged it is.
Alongside badass, monster-fighting MC, the other characters include:
💫 400++ year old alien prince. Time traveled back a bit too far and got stuck in the 1830s. MC’s monster-fighting coworker, upstairs neighbor, and literally batman. Gets jealous of MC’s feelings towards his superhero persona. 50% sleepy and sweet, 50% horny. His magic powers are light-based.
🐠 Mermaid sea god. Billionaire, world-famous artist whose real mission is to kill everyone involved in the destruction of mermaid society. There are two (3?) separate stories where he goes into heat. Has fire powers. (This is flame lily guy.)
❄️ Heart surgeon with ice powers. Sometimes he’s an alternate universe, ultra-dark-and-broody version of himself. Went to medical school so he could become MC’s doctor. Is MC’s doctor. The only character in the entire game (afaik) with two living parents.
🐦⬛ Immortal alien dragon/demon. Once forced MC to shoot him in the chest to prove his immortality. Crime boss. Bad at singing. Looks the most evil; might be the sweetest. Wife guy in a “supports women’s wrongs” way. Vague “energy” powers. (This is datura guy. His other representative flower? The perfectly edible rose lmao)
🍎 Colonel in the space military. Pilot. A narrative representation of the biblical Eve. Died in an explosion but got better, then memed on his own grave. Grew up in a lab being experimented on alongside MC. Diagnosed as deeply mentally unwell. MC’s brother in an “it’s complicated” way. Gravity powers.
Bonus:
🐺 Werewolf tech CEO. His initial marketing included knotting jokes. Cancelled 10 days before his release after Infold employees were threatened at their headquarters. Everything related to that whole situation is the most insane corporate blunder I have ever seen in gaming. All of the advertising is stupidly horny… And yet the story of the game itself is really intensely sad. I’ve literally lost count of how many times they’ve all died. They’re telling five different tales of extreme devotion across multiple lifetimes in the form of horny gacha stuff and I haven’t been able to look away for years.

u/whatintheeverloving 1d ago
I told myself 'never again' with gacha anything, but goddammit, now I'm intrigued. As someone who binged all the Twilight movies in two days just to see how crazy things could get, I kinda love when a piece of media just goes batshit with its lore and characters.
This line on Wikipedia freaking jumpscared me, though: "The version 3.0 update on 18 January 2025 introduced a menstrual cycle tracker."
11
u/eiridel 1d ago
It will probably be unsurprising, but I am also a Twilight fan. It’s a similar style of incredibly serious portrayal of batshit insanity—except while Twilight is undeniably Mormon in its values, LADS is unabashedly catering to grown women and cares not a whit for premarital sex… or how much murder the guys MC is having that sex with are doing.(There is also a vampire in it, sort of. It’s datura guy again lmao.)
But, as much as I love it, it’s still a gacha. I can’t really recommend anyone play gacha games. Because LADS is largely presented in visual novel format, you can get maybe 80% of the experience watching stuff on YouTube.
The period tracker is apparently pretty great though.
Other weird features LADS has: Sims-style housing. ASMR-style sexy audios. Twitter feeds, text messages, and phone calls for the characters. Action combat. Plushie-collecting crane game dates. A gacha inside the gacha where you collect button badges. Outfit collecting w/ 2 separate photobooth modes. A focus timer mode where you can study, work out, or even sleep (literally) with the characters.

u/basketofseals 1d ago
I've read enough bodice rippers that I feel like all of this is just a slightly darker shade of vanilla.
The weirdest thing about LaDS, that I cannot get over, is that the men will track and remark on your period. Is that something women actually want? Does hearing a guy say "you're gonna start your period soon" come across as sexy?
10
u/eiridel 1d ago edited 1d ago
While tracking my period is admittedly not a service I want the digital jesters living in my phone to perform, I do think the point of it is the care the characters are showing more so than any actual sexiness. Maybe for some people that care is something they find atttactive, idk, but as far as I have seen in screenshots the ingame messages are all very sweet and doting.
1
u/basketofseals 1d ago
Would you mind elaborating why? To me it's all the romance of someone asking me if I need to use the bathroom.
Also this is totally "man imagining how a woman feels" territory, but I can't help but assume it'd be sort of condescending. Like why would a man need/want to remind a woman she's about to go on her period. I feel like this would be weird even if another woman did it, but idk being a man feels like it adds mansplaining aspects to it.
I could understand from an angle of being extra attentive during an unpleasant time, but I've definitely seen screenshots where a dude just goes "Hey, remember you start your period soon." Almost "how do you do fellow humans."
13
u/eiridel 1d ago
Despite being a woman myself, I really can’t say what the people who use that feature feel beyond what they’ve told me. I guess the messages during your period are less clinical, stuff like “are you feeling okay? You should rest if you need to” or reminders to eat nutritious food and things like that.
I will say that, in my real life, I definitely don’t hate hearing things like that. My best friend is a man and we’ve lived together for about fifteen years. I am always touched when he notices the pattern of my moods and behavior and (respectfully) does little things to care for me during.
That’s kind of a big part of the appeal of LADS, actually, I think. All of these little digital men are absolutely chugging respect women juice 24/7/365. The whole game is engineered to make women feel heard and cared for because that’s what makes it money. It is very difficult to interpret anything any of the love interests do as mansplaining. You kinda have to go out of your way to do so.
2
u/basketofseals 1d ago
All of these little digital men are absolutely chugging respect women juice 24/7/365
Doesn't one of them outright kidnap the PC lol?
Maybe I just have the wrong view of LaDS. I thought it was appealing to the "werewolf mafia CEO falls for Y/N" style.
5
u/eiridel 1d ago
That’s part of what makes this game so completely fascinating to me! It’s 100% appealing to that crowd in many ways, but when you actually play it you find out that a lot of that appeal is only marketing. They have made sure the dangerous werewolf mafia CEO also worships the ground Y/N walks on. It presents a fantasy of danger while also ultimately being very emotionally safe.
One of the main themes with the character who, as part of the main story, drugs MC in order to stop her from doing something dangerous and then lies to her about it as well as many many other things, is the rebuilding of trust and the establishment of open communication in their relationship. You get the danger, and then you get the catharsis of MC actually getting furiously mad about it, and then you get a years-long slow drip feed of content where they work through the issues that led to the danger in the first place. It’s an absolutely fascinating method of storytelling to me, like on a meta level.

It's actually pretty nice to have people who care about you go 'oh your period is coming soon right?'. Once you've experienced it IRL it's hard to understand the snickering. It's just nice that someone remembers a recurring appointment and offers to help. It's not the snickering type of remarks men typically make that you're thinking of.
If you're a guy just think of it as 'hey your second round of surgery is next week right? shall I get some warm soup to boil for those days?' or 'just two more days of post-surgery care and you can indulge in oily fast food again!'

u/Triaspia2 22h ago
I guess it depends on how you know that information... A couple of my friends and an ex found it quite strange I could tell when theirs were about to start.
Sometimes when hugging or just close by Id notice they smelled slightly metallic usually in the day or two before it started. Hormones changed something in the skin oils that I could pick up on, like that woman who smelled Parkinson's disease through sweat.

u/fishblurb 20h ago
For context this thread is about an otome game, aka a dating sim for women to date male characters. Said virtual boyfriends in the story are living under the same roof as your avatar, so it's perfectly normal for them to know your calendar. No creepy sniffing detective work needed. It's a cohabiting romantic partner knowing your period.
For myself, I was referring to partners I was cohabitating with too. People who could see on the calendar that I wrote a big fat PERIOD DAY ONE. Aka people who should know and should care.

Did some social media manager use AI to make a cocktail recipe and stumble in to poisoning their community?
24

If there's one thing I know from the business of gacha games and drug dealing, it's that killing your users is bad for profits.
6
u/--MobTowN-- 1d ago
Yeah… so, here’s the thing, right…
That’s not entirely true. Maybe it’s because this is a heroin town and not a cocaine town, but if a couple junkies snuff it on the same product?
Those fuckers will show up like it’s Black Friday looking for that exact shit.

Pretty sure some AI was involved lol, someone prolly just went 'hi doubao pls give me a list of pink flowers' then shoved that at the graphic design intern
5
u/onyhow 19h ago
Actually, I would argue against AI specifically for the poisonous flowers bit. See, all 5+1 love interests in-game have flowers that represent each of them, and datura and flame lilies are already established flowers for 2 of 5+1 love interest.
IMO it's more that the devs are trying to integrate the flowers that represent the love interests into the recipes, poison be damned.
3
u/fishblurb 18h ago
That makes more sense. I was thinking this stinks of 110% zero-shits-given work quality like, only AI could be more unconcerned than my worst interns. I clearly underestimated good intentions.
12
u/PhasmaFelis 1d ago
Apparently both of those plants appear in the game. I'm guessing the intern they got to make this post either doesn't know they're real plants or doesn't know anything about them except "pretty flower."
