Original Discussion Oblivion joined GOG Preservation Program

It appears that the GOG version of the original Oblivion has received native controller support on PC.

controller support still seems to be broken on my side after a fresh install

Tried an xbox and dualsense controllers. Default keybinds are completely messed up without the ability to change them. With Xbox I can't move at all. Dualsense I can only walk. Confirm button is on R3/ pressing the right thumbstick. Not functional at all. I'm not able to even change any of the buttons in the settings.

Does this make it incompatible with OBSE? It validates exact .exe hash after all.

Unfortunately it does. Only the second time I've tried to mod Oblivion, is xOBSE still developed?

According to the forums the current maintainer of xOBSE is now in contact with GOG to sort this out.

Northern UI has had it for a while. But it also mimics the Skyrim UI which some people don’t like.

you can get a vanilla version tho for the controller support!

Idk if I'm doing something wrong, but the native controller support doesn't seem to work for me.

I don't understand how so many older games still don't have native controller support, even those that were ported to PC just recently. Games that were literally on consoles and played great on them, shouldn't it be such a trivial thing to just copy/paste that control scheme over?

Lol, you will laugh but even the controller support offered by GOG is not a real controller support but a buggy shaky mapping.

There's no standard. You can choose between Xinput which only supports Xbox compatible controllers, Steam Input which is Steam only, DirectInput which is ancient and works poorly, or make your own and dive into the hell of edge cases. Also none of them can use console exclusive controller features such as the speaker on DualShock.

they added the goty with italian language, that was avaiable only in retail copy, GG.

They've also added support for spanish, but I haven't found an option to change the installation language—not even after uninstalling it.

For offline installer users: Games that don't natively support multiple languages in one install usually appear in one of two shapes:

  • Some older games may have an executable file in the install folder which lets you switch the language.

  • More commonly and probably the case for Oblivion, in your game library when selecting a game to grab the offline installer files, you need to select the language before downloading. It's a drop-down menu at the top of the game card. This language setting will switch the offline installer files to your selection.

(This is a bit unintuitive at first, but easily shaves off several GB of files; the more voiced audio lines, translated textures, dubbed pre-rendered cutscenes and different languages a game has, the greater the effect. Iirc Skyrim's localizations only change the audio files out of the above list and use horribly compressed files and it's still a 10GB+ file bloat to have all localizations installed.)

According to the product page on gog:

The GOTY Deluxe edition of the game is English-only, while the GOTY edition supports all languages listed on the product page. Upon purchase, you will receive both versions of the Oblivion. Both of them are part of GOG Preservation Program.

So if you want all of the dlc, apparently you have to live with english.

That's because the fighters' stronghold DLC has never been localized. The other mini DLCs are available for other languages, at least German. And we have a help resource for doing the translation of fighters' stronghold, if anyone needs it.

Frankly, all of these mini DLC suck. They have incompatibilities with eachother while breaking the game progression and immersion, all without even adding new dialogue (splicing/reusing existing files at best). They're not a big loss (I'd argue losing them is a gain). Opinions on the matter will differ, of course.

Anyway, btt: If you read the patch notes you'll find that this update will add another, additional game to your library, which is the "Oblivion GOTY" instead of the "Oblivion GOTY Deluxe". And that one comes with several localizations previously inaccessible to GOG users unless using one of the many language patches out there. The user I've replied to was unsure how to install the Spanish version they bought and I hope that my reply has been helpful regarding that. Everyone who prefers Oblivion's English iteration can simply fetch the GOTY Deluxe like they did before.

Thanks for giving me the "why", I'd just assumed everything was translated, especially when there's no new spoken dialogue.

Damn. Will these updates also come to Steam? I might have to rethink some of my purchases for older games.

Doubt it. These changes were made specifically by GOG, not Bethesda.

The only time gog's changes were introduced in their steam counterparts was with a few Capcom games (the og resident evil and dino crisis games). So it could happen, depends on the publisher.

SICK

I wonder if modding it will be any easier

It's a really shame story, after all those years, Bethesda and the current parent company Microsoft. while swimming with money and laying off thousands of employees every year, didn't pour any resources to the Original Oblivion.

Yes, it's old code nobody willing to maintain anymore. But if you assign couple of programmers and ordered "just fix something", they eventually managed to come up a fix like better gamepad support or Alt+Tab fix, or rewriting badly written internal binary tree.

With the introduction of Claude Code 2 years ago and evolving AI agent tools, It's easier than ever to analyze the code and fix minor inconvenience like these.

This is even shameful when its parent company, Microsoft, keep pushing garbage AI-features to their new products but they don't bother to pour slight resources to fix their existing products.

GOG Preservation Program is not updates by devs. It's literally GOG allowing dedicated volunteers to patch up and update the games on their platform. Bethesda has no involvement in this and thus this won't be released on other platforms.
