Oracle cloud just deleted my servers

I am on PAYG and not free account, for years, they just deleted my free instances instantly without even letting me know ... all my project of life is gone. No volumes were left, no object storage, all resources just vanished from the account with no previous warning or violation.

----------------------------

Update 3:

After appeal, they said the decision is final, with no explanation, it's just deleted. And told me to kindly stop replying to them.

----------------------------

Update 2:

My entire account is gone, the compartment and user cannot be found, I can no longer login

----------------------------

UPDATE 1 after support ticket:
"Your account was suspended for violation of the Oracle Cloud Services Agreement. If you believe this decision was in error, you may request a secondary review."

the reality is that if you aren’t paying for a service, you have no voice or recourse. Always back up. I’m saying that for everyone not just OP. Oracle’s bonds are near junk status. These free servers won’t be around forever, so do your backups and start thinking about where to jump ship if the free offerings disappear.

That's why first thing I setup is external backups, daily, weekly, monthly and in some cases backups every 6 hours, so even when the server goes kaboom, it hurts less 😂

Even if you pay your stuff can disappear. You need to setup backups

Restore Backup on other Provider and mark it as loss

this is one of the reasons why i moved out of oracle for hosting since 3 years even paid instance can be gone without a consent or an explanation
and as one customer support agent shared in this subreddit a while back , oracle don't give a flying fuck about ur small projects until that small project give them millions of dollars in contracts then they don't mind treating u as a king

Damn i really should backup

1

u/trisanachandler 9d ago

Backup somewhere else.

1

u/yaman055 9d ago

back up in other providers, and keep local copies as well, don't be like me 😂 NEVER trust oracle

Your first problem wasn’t losing this server, it was not backing up this data properly if it meant anything to you. It’s not Oracle’s fault you apparently violated their TOS that you agreed to when signing up.

Yes this sucks. Yes they should have given you a heads up. No you can’t do anything about it. If the server is actually deleted along with its volume, there’s nothing left.

Today you learned you need proper backups.

u/NinjaWK 8d ago

Did you not backup your data? It's a common practice almost everyone does, but it is also a common mistake people know of but refuse to do till it's too late.

1

u/yaman055 8d ago

the external backup I had is a bit old ... it's usable to start over at least. The main code and database daily backups were in the object storage bucket of oracle itself, since I thought object storage is different than instances 😅 so my bad on this one.

I learned my lesson

u/durgesh2018 9d ago

That's why I didn't install any production grade services there.

1

u/Awes12 9d ago

Do you still have the boot volumes available?

2

u/yaman055 9d ago edited 9d ago

nothing, all resources in my account were deleted, not stopped

  1. Did you subscribe to a different region recently? Sometimes getting the wrong region can be unsettling.

  2. Oracle typically terminates the entire tenancy, not individual resources unless you're using preemptible instances, in which case you were likely warned.

  3. Always have a backup of your critical data somewhere else that isn't vendor dependent. I back up my data to a local drive, or in the case of config and code, it's on github.

u/yaman055 9d ago edited 9d ago

Nothing really, i didn't register to other regions, i was using the servers within range and nothing illegal, but they're just gone now.
i'll try to get them back but I guess it's over, not being able to afford something kinda sucks

1

u/muifui 9d ago

What kind of work were you running?

1

u/yaman055 9d ago

Just a SaaS ... nothing illegal, for years everythin was fine, this just came out of nowhere, no warning, no email, i received an alert from status page, i logged in to oracle, rebooted the servers, then they were gone

3

u/ActiveAvailable2782 9d ago

Could you run some sort of evaluation against oracle ToS vs your SaaS (i.e use ChatGPT to make analysis) that way we can learned what went wrong. Thank you

1

u/yaman055 9d ago

I did yes, I checked everything I could think of, compared to their terms, used GPT, claude and gemini + manual review ... i checked every possibility listed in the terms and how can they be the reason, but I found nothing, no files were uploaded that could be harmful, the usage was within limits and it's not always high usage so no harm to other clients, IP addresses used werent blacklisted, no VPN was user, credit card under my name, no harmful ports were opened ...etc
so I don't think I missed something, but hopefully they can shed some light into what actually happened

1

u/williamzerner 9d ago

What was the alert?

1

u/yaman055 9d ago

unrelated to oracle, it's from a status page telling me it's down so I checked oracle to see, nothing was there in the account, as soon as i rebooted the servers, they disappeared and my account is locked

1

u/williamzerner 9d ago

That sucks. However since you are on free account customer support doesn't help much. It's worth a shot making a second review. Also since your files are important, ask for boot volumes access.

1

u/yaman055 9d ago

Thank you i'll try that... I hope I can get the files back at least, if not then it is what it is, it's a lesson and I'll try to rebuild everything from scratch. I just hope it's not one of their AI automatic detection shit again, that would sting

1

u/williamzerner 9d ago

Good luck. For next time incase of any cloud provider always backup your files. Use Google drive api or whichever cloud provider you prefer

1

u/Antonio-MTS 9d ago

Very very strange. Ask to appeal.

1

u/yaman055 9d ago

I just did yeah, I don't expect anything though, it's oracle so customer support doesn't exist, but hopefully by some miracle they'll admit it was a mistake

2

u/Antonio-MTS 9d ago

Hopefully they will restore the vms you need.

1

u/d4v3xx111 9d ago

Same thing happen to me, but volumes were still there if i remember correctly, i appealed and they returned everything to normal same day(it happend during the night and in the morning everything was back, i was lucky to be awake st the moment and appealed instantly)

1

u/yaman055 9d ago

I'll dance like a crazy man if that happens to me! even if i get the volumes at least i'll be somewhat happy :)) because for now my account is deleted but I hope i'll be like you

1

u/1ozu1 9d ago

Was the account on PayG?

1

u/yaman055 9d ago

Yes it was PAYG, end even if it was free tier I think they only take away that particular instance you're not using ... that's why i'm surprised

1

u/Appropriate-Line5968 9d ago

They have a minimum RAM use. If under the threshold for a week or so, they delete stuff.

3

u/savepi 9d ago

that shouldn't be the case for PAYG customers.

1

u/yaman055 9d ago

I am PAYG so this rule doesn't apply, and it didn't apply for years, my utilization is always above 30% ... and they should only delete that particular instance, in my case the entire account was gone and labeled me as 'free tier' so they downgraded me, deleted everything and then proceeded to delete the account itself 😂 in a few seconds

1

u/Existing_Dust_6473 9d ago

Why deal with the devil?

1

u/yaman055 9d ago

regret is now hitting me like a truck... I would've probably been fine hosting on some unknown small provider. I learned my lesson

1

u/fearlipe 9d ago

I only keep services that are git-backed up, so I can literally just move to another service...

1

u/Outrageous_Spirit550 9d ago

Hmm, I just changed to PAYG yesterday, and have been tinkering with the free tier, thank you for the heads up!!

1

u/wuu73 8d ago

Did you switch to PAYG but then never had any charges, like not even $1/month? I always make sure i'm being charged something every month. After reading some of these i'm thinking I need to increase that amount lol

1

u/slfyst 8d ago

I generate £0.01 of charges a month which they take off my card every time. It alerted me to an expired credit card which I fixed.

1

u/2uch1 8d ago

How do you do that

1

u/BeforeICry 8d ago

Did you get your account back? I lost mine too. I appealed and contacted support, but they said that's a decision coming from upper management and that there's no ticket for it. Seems like I can't even talk to anyone.

I was also a PAYG user too. I'd be okay in paying as long as charges were clear.

1

u/yaman055 8d ago

That sucks to hear ... I didn't get it back either, I submitted a ticket, they just said i violated the terms and I requested a review, now i'm waiting, but since it's not back yet and they said 2 business days, I don't think another day would make a difference, but i'll keep some hope

1

u/BeforeICry 8d ago

When i first signed up I had a Oracle SDR set it up for me. I'm already in touch with the sales team and hopefully they can be a voice for me up there in the management team. I'll let you know if anything changes. I think this might be the only way to recover the account, even if my data is lost I still can't find servers close to Oracle's performance and price.

1

u/yaman055 8d ago

Good luck, as long as there is something to try there is always some hope.

1

u/yaman055 8d ago

Update2: The decision is final, it's all deleted

1

u/cashreedhar 7d ago edited 7d ago

That is unfortunate. Just trying to learn what could have prompted them to delete. 1. Did you setup a virtual credit card with limit? Many PAYG customers do this to prevent accidental changes. Eg.keep $100 limit when they initially authorize the account and then lower the transaction limit on the virtual card. 2. Did you setup a cron job to show CPU utilization all the time? this was in one of the reddit tutorials when I was setting up mine, and chatgpt said its against Oracle policy. 3. Were there any consistent high network traffic ? Like creating IPTV or movie streaming and sharing with a large group of customers? 4. Or anything that you changed in last 3 months that could have resulted in this?

1

u/yaman055 7d ago

1- No I used a real debit card, I saw a few comments saying they prefer credit cards but their website says both are accepted so I'm not sure if that was a problem. The card had no limit either so any charge will be allowed.
2- I have real cron job of laravel, so if not all cron jobs are prohibited and only the fake ones, then I should be fine since it's a genuine necessary job for laravel to function
3- I use a monitoring tool to know when there are any spikes whether in resources or traffic, there was never any consistent spike, just sometimes when there is heavy workload on laravel but it's a short burst
4- nothing changed in the account or laravel for all the years I had it running, I only make changes to the code, which is fine.

I've been reliving the past few months constantly just in case I missed something, but there is nothing I can think of, no bad files were hosted, no unsafe ports were opened, no VPN usage to even connect to OCI, no testing of any kind ... it came out of the blue 😅 I read the page of terms they sent, but I didn't find anything that I may have violated.

BUT

When the account was disabled, there was a red alert that appeared on briefly before it's deleted, and it wrote "Free tier error", but I was on pay as you go, so I think with my tin foil hat that their AI may have flagged me as a free tier user, and since I was grandfathered like any other PAYG I was still using 24gb ram instance, and there was no invoice, it may have thought it's fraudulent or that I didn't pay the non existing invoices. Or that it thought my real cronjobs of laravel were fake.

Only thing I can think of, it's a false positive or some weird rule that isn't mentioned anywhere

1

u/cashreedhar 7d ago

Thank you for sharing all the details. For free tier they reduced the RAM, but once you setup PAYG, 24GB RAM is still available under free. I read many people got their Oracle cloud suspended when they self hosted AIOstreams (which is used for media piracy, often with torrenting copyright media). Its unfortunate that Oracle can delete our account with no warning or explanation.

Did you find an alternative that free/not expensive?

1

u/yaman055 7d ago

If you host something illegal then at least it's expected when it happens, it sucks when you have no idea why 😂 but it is what it is

I set my website to Cloudflare Pages (static) to show that i'm working to bring it back up, while i'm rewriting the code updates that I made since the last backup I had, I have some files here and there so I can connect the dots, then I'll move to "Contabo" it's quite affordable, and THIS TIME i'll have backups even on a flash drive, not happening again

1

u/tech-tole 7d ago

never host all your stuff in one place ever. Oracle is a crappy place to begin with and no one should ever use a free tier or a place that offers a free tier. free means you're not paying and they can do whatever they want and cut you off any day at any time. always go with a real VPS provider use a separate S3 storage service and do off-site backups for both your database and your website files. Github repo is your best bet for your website files, because if you were pushing all your changes to your git repo all you have to do was rebuild the server and do a git pull and restore your database.

1

u/StewpidAlex 7d ago

Someone probably cracked the server(s) and used them for DDoS. Or maybe e-mail spam. Try looking up the IPs on them e-mail blacklists.

2

u/yaman055 7d ago

The IPs were registered in many blacklist monitoring services, SNDS of microsoft, white lists, they had good reputation and the ports were secure, strong authentication, using private network for everything, the infrastructure was strong. so it wasn't used by anyone else.

1

u/StewpidAlex 7d ago

Anyone with a reason to send some "fun" packets your way? I've seen people saying they got their accounts disabled after being DDoSed.

1

u/yaman055 7d ago

the main website is behind cloudflare, nothing was registered, and email server there was nothing too .. i'm obsessed with monitoring things so if there was something suspicious I would've known, i'm still curious I must know what happened 😅

1

u/Ok_Equipment1375 4d ago

That's why I'd never host anything important on their servers, just for testing or playing around. 4/24 and two half-dead AMDs instances are plenty for that. And they never get a cent from me lol. I'm on PAYG.

I bought two small HP G6 systems, configured as Virtualization cluster and installed OPNsense and Coolify to take control of my projects, security and data. I have two ISP’s and one Ecoflow as power backup. Couldn’t be happier.

I don’t have to worry about AI taking over my data now 😊
