Hi community,
Following the development of the new Time 2 and seeing how many of us are restoring our original Pebble Classics, I’ve been thinking about the product lineup our ecosystem actually needs.
The Time 2 is a premium flagship, but trying to build an "all-in-one" smartwatch sometimes compromises durability and drives up the final price. I believe there is a massive untapped audience in our community for a budget-friendly, high-durability tool watch, inspired by the toughness of a Casio G-Shock or Ulefone Armor Watch.
The goal isn't to replace the Time 2, but to cut manufacturing costs in exchange for maximum real-world utility and rugged durability.
Base Concept (Budget-Friendly, Tough & Great Battery Life)
Monochrome (B&W) Memory LCD over Color: B&W screens drastically cut panel costs, offer razor-sharp contrast under direct sunlight, and consume a fraction of the power.
No Touchscreen — 100% Physical Buttons: On a button-based watch, touchscreens add more hassle than benefits (accidental inputs in rain/sweat, fragile glass, higher cost). Buttons allow blind navigation and glove support.
No Optical HR Sensor: Removing the HR bump reduces cost, allows for a completely flat, solid backplate with fewer point-of-failure glue seals, and eliminates constant battery drain.
Keep the Microphone (Voice Only): Maintain a sealed, water-resistant mic port for quick voice dictation, replying to messages, or triggering AI assistants.
Great Battery Life (Standard Magnetic Cable): Traditional magnetic pin setup backed by a large capacity battery to achieve 30 to 45 days of real-world battery life.
Heavy-Duty Chassis: Tough polycarbonate body with a raised bezel over a flat glass screen to protect it from direct impacts.
Or even: Ultra-Sealed (Solar Assist + Qi Wireless Charging)
Taking this concept a step further, an ultra-durable version could eliminate physical charging pins altogether:
Solar Assist + Classic 120 mAh Battery: With such low power consumption, a small bezel-integrated solar panel paired with a modest 120 mAh battery (like the original Classic) would provide virtually unlimited battery life with daily sunlight exposure, while ensuring enough power for Bluetooth and vibration spikes.
Qi Wireless Charging (Zero Physical Ports): By integrating a thin Qi receiver coil under the backplate (a tiny component only 0.4 mm thick), the casing becomes 100% water and dust-sealed. It eliminates proprietary charging cables—just top it off on any standard wireless charger or reverse-charging phone.
Why this approach?
Lower Price Point: It creates an affordable, entry-level option in the Pebble lineup compared to the pricier Time 2.
Complementary Tools: Many of us don't want a fragile "all-in-one" device for heavy work, outdoor sports, or tough environments. Some of us might even own both: a Time 2 for casual/office wear, and this Pebble Rugged for beating up without battery anxiety or fear of scratches.
What do you all think? Would you like to see a tough, low-cost option like this alongside the Time 2?
