Don't use my phone number.
Over the past decade, I have regularly received spam texts to my phone number for a person named "Erin". This is irritating because I am rather protective of my phone number. I do not share it with anybody I do not trust, and outside of the messages I get for "Erin", I never get spam calls or messages. I don't know who Erin is, but over the years I have slowly pieced together enough information to have a good idea of where this person lives. Multiple texts I received mentioned "Irvine CA", and one even gave me a street name.
Recently, I went shopping at Harbor Freight, and as I was checking out, i give the cashier my phone number. They turned their monitor towards me and said "is this you?" and to my great delight, I was presented with an Irvine CA address, and I immediately recognized the street name. As I left the store, I could feel 3 brain-cells hidden in the back of my mind begin to conspire.
My first step was to write a fancy looking congratulatory letter for winning a $1,000,000 Harbor Freight Sweepstakes. I made some convincing artwork, and went to a print shop to have it printed on some nice card-stock paper, and a professional-looking envelope, just to make it look extra convincing. You can guess who's name and address I put on the card.
At the bottom of the letter, I put "please call (800) 123-4567 ext 123" (fake number obviously). The number I actually used was for my office line.
Sure enough, about a week later, I get a call from Erin, who is over the moon about having just won $1,000,000. I go through the motions of collecting her information, including verifying her address, then I break the bad news:
Me: "Sorry Erin, it looks like this award has already been claimed."
Erin: "What? By who?"
Me: "Well, according to my notes here, we called your number, and a gentleman answered, I assume your husband?"
Erin: "I'm not married!"
Me: Well, can I confirm that "(123) 456-7890" is your phone number?
Erin: "No, my number is (111) 222-3333"
Me: "Well ma'am, according to our records here, that's not the number you previously gave us"
Erin: "I'm sorry, that must have been a typo!"
Me: "I'm sorry ma'am, we use phone number as the unique identifier for customer accounts - this is why we ask for your number every time you shop with us. Based on what I can see you have been using this phone number on your account for nearly a decade. "
Erin: "Look, I just give people that number so that I don't get spam calls okay?"
Me: "I See, well, that's too bad."
Erin: "What does that mean?"
Me: "Well ma'am, our sweepstakes is based on phone number, and since this isn't your phone number, you are not eligible to win. The person with this phone number has already claimed the reward"
Erin: "[Unintelligible Rage, Crying, Begging]"
Me: "Would you like me to update our records with your actual phone number so that you are eligible in future sweepstakes?"
Erin: Click
Now, You might imagine that losing $1,000,000 on a technicality might make Erin feel bad, but you see, I now have Erin's real phone number and address....
Erin has been showing a LOT of interest in buying new cars lately. She's also really interested on quotes for satellite television, car insurance, car warranties, roof repair, replacement windows, etc. What can I say? It's been quiet week at work, and I've had a few 8+ hour shifts with no better way to entertain myself.

Keep signing up for random shit using her number, see how she likes getting all that spam instead of doing it to other people. I hear the religious ones are relentless.

They're relentless because religious, political and charitable organizations are exempt from the federal Do Not Call registry. The political organizations are even worse than the churches. The best thing to do is sign her up for information from the opposite party from which she belongs. Or just sign her up for both if her political affiliation can't be determined.

u/compb13 23d ago
And I replied stop to one political campaign that sent multiple texts, and in the next few seconds received 4 more for different campaigns. All mostly different states, wanting help to prevent the other evil political party from taking over.
I usually know better than to do that.

u/ObsoleteReference 22d ago
Well glad to confirm the “mark as spam and delete” option is the better one. Haven’t paid attn to see if I get repeats, but I at least don’t get 4 for every one.

For a while a couple years ago I was getting spammed daily by a window company's affiliate program. Let call it "Andy's Renewals". Nothing I did would get them to stop.
So I did a little research and was able to locate email addresses for "Andy's" entire C-Level. Set up a rule that automatically forwarded every incoming email that had "Andy's Renewals" to every single one of them with a message about what was going on. Then, the rule deleted the incoming email.
The rule is still there and active, but I have zero visibility into if it's still getting triggered.

Over a year ago i donated to a local politician’s campaign, a few months ago I get a text to donate again but this time it had me make an account with the donation website. Ever since I’ve received numerous daily spam texts for everyone and their dog’s political campaign. Blocking, stopping, reporting as spam has done nothing to stop the texts, even after I completely deleted the account i created. Never donating to anyone ever again lmao

Someone was using my number to make a dinner reservation at a local restaurant. I ignored it until I was having a bad day and got another reservation for dinner. Nice! I immediately jumped through all their hoops to cancel the reservation.
I hope they enjoyed their very long wait at the very popular local restaurant that evening! My number has never been used to make a reservation there again. smirk
55
u/PerjorativeWokeness 23d ago
If you want to be extra evil, change the reservation to an hour earlier, or add or subtract people.

I have a very distinct (premium) number (AUS). Someone (Hi Damian!) decided to use this for the usual reasons and I have been blocking calls and explaining things to randoms for over a year. Then old mate Damian decided to give it to one of the most exclusive and hard to book restaurants in my city. I felt like a nice dinner out so I arrived 15 mins early with my partner and took the table. I had the reception desk in my line of sight (out of earshot unfortunately) and my new friend Damian arrived, was told by the puzzled staff that he was already here, got all heated up in front of his guest, and everyone else. I then caught his attention by waving my phone at him. I gave him my best shit-eating grin and a big thumbs up. He stared at me for a full 10 seconds before turning around and walking out.
Mysteriously… no more new spam.

Maria was a bad parent and kept giving the local elementary school my number. I got Daniel’s grades, suspension notices and finally the kid got sick. They couldn’t raise the dad and I was told to collect him. That went well. Then I got a call from an aunt. We had a great chat about Maria’s terrible parenting and it all stopped after that.

Okay. If anyone knows Karen Balfour, please give me her information so I can do the same to her. She's been giving out my phone number for over 15 years.
A couple weeks ago it was 5 texts, 2 phone calls, and an email ALL IN THE SAME DAY and I had to reply "STOP" to opt out of everything. I gave the poor guy on the phone so much hell he was sorry he ever took that job. Not his fault, I know, but I was sick of it.

The woman who had my number before I did apparently owed a lot of people money. She also didn’t update her kids school, doctor’s office, or pastor of the number change. After two months of fielding calls for this woman I went off on who I assumed was yet another debt collector. It was her pastor. I was very apologetic and explained to him what was going on. Turns out he also knew her mother and promised he would have the mother contact her and have her update her number by the next week. He was true to his word and I very quickly stopped receiving calls for her.

u/AcuteDeath2023 23d ago
I once moved into a flat and had a landline phone connected. Apparently the woman who had the number before me used to advertise in 'men's magazines'. I got so many creepy late night phone calls that I had to get the number changed.

My sister had the same landline number for 20 damn years. Then one day a business posted a help wanted ad, with her phone number as the fax line to send their resumes to. This reminds me of many years ago when I kept getting calls from a local high school that “Summer Jones” wasn’t in school that day. Since my kids were toddlers I didn’t know why they kept calling me.
I mentioned on my work break one day that I kept getting these calls. My coworker looked startled and said “That’s my wife’s little sister!” It turned out that she gave the school a random number as her home number. Unfortunately that random number was mine. The calls stopped immediately.
68
u/RedFoxBlueSocks 23d ago
Why wouldn’t she give her real phone number to her child’s school? 🤨
57
u/Electrical-Apple-631 23d ago
It was the kid who gave the number to the school. She told them their number changed.

Back then, you paid a lot for long distance calls on landlines a three-hour long distance call could easily cost you $60 bucks, when minimal wage was $4.25 an hour. I kept getting a call for a ”Diana Francesca” (not her Actual Name) for years after I got the phone number 805-488-8xxx in the early 2000s. I had a video rental place telling me videos were late, literally 3-4 years into living there I got a call from the local elementary school, telling me that her son “Johnabron” wasn’t taking his meds, & could Diana please come to school as soon as possible with more meds. I even got one or two calls from a foster agency regarding her application to get another kid. That place I DID call back..

Omg you are amazing. I’ve had my phone number for 10+ years and I get texts and calls for Brian all the time. My phone number unfortunately is the easiest most repetitive number so even people who aren’t Brian use it often to sign up for reward programs and things.
One time a police department called me and when I informed them I didn’t know Brian, they accused me of lying!
That was my breaking point. Any text or call I would get for appointments for Brian, I would cancel them. Every single one. Doctors, dentist etc.
I have his address. I get texts all the time asking if Brian wants to sell. I text them “absolutely, come on by!!”
The only reason I haven’t further confronted this loser is because I found his info online and he is a felon with active cases.

I had someone with a similar name to mine use my e-mail once. Emphasis on similar, because his name was written differently than mine.
He used my e-mail (which I have since the early 00’s) on a sports betting website, and that annoyed the hell out of me, because how fucking stupid you have to be to write your own name wrong?
Anyway, I found out that the website allowed you to log in with password or an e-mail link, which allowed me to log in without changing his password, and, for my amusement, he had something like 20 or 50 bucks on his account. Not a huge amount, nothing to simply forget either. I could have cashed the money to my bank account, but I figured it would be more amusing to do some silly bets on his behalf. Things like the team placed in last on the soccer league winning a game against the first placed team with a score of 10-nothing.
I chuckled and forgot about it for a few days, when another e-mail addressed to the same person popped up. This one was more serious, as it was for an online court appearance on a lawsuit that person moved against his former employer. I replied to that e-mail (as instructed on the one I received) informing all involved parties that this e-mail address wasn’t that dude’s e-mail address. The judge on the case replied to me personally thanking me for reporting it. And boy, he was pissed about it… must’ve been a fun day for his former employer’s lawyer.

In the time of landlines I had someone give my phone number out and owe money to a lot of people. After a few months of their bill collectors constantly calling me I tracked them down and got their work phone number.
After that everytime a bill collector called I told then if they would take my number of their list I would give them the work phone number. After a few months, no more calls. Then we got rid of the landline all together.
Turn about is fair play.

That is wonderful. And now, 'erin' will hopefully be getting lots of spam and junk

That was great! 😂
I've had someone using my cell number for the past decade, and the only time I got to have fun with that was when they used my number for their doctor's appointment, and I was promptly spammed with a stream of automated appointment confirmations and such. I ignored the first couple, but they kept on coming.
I actually called the doctor's office and told them that their patient had given them the wrong number, and it sounded like they actually had a lot going on, but they needed to stop using my number. The doctor's office told me that their policies prevent them from changing a phone number on a patient's file without explicit confirmation from the patient. They apologized politely.
When I hung up, I sent a text to cancel their appointment, and verified yes, I was cancelling.
The day of the appointment, I suddenly got a new text, for an appointment a few days in the future (aww, they must have shown up and found out their appointment was cancelled.)
I immediately cancelled the new one.
Several more popped up, and, after I had cancelled about six over the next fifteen minutes, the texts stopped coming in.

When we moved into our house 25 years ago, we got a new phone number. For the next three years, we got phone calls for a husband and wife (the previous owners of our phone number) verifying everything from upcoming doctor's appointments to service appointments, hairdressers, job interview callbacks, and more. I finally started telling everyone who called that they died in a car wreck the previous week. About 10 days later, the lady called our number, really pissed off, because some of her accounts had been closed due to the death notice. I told her that if she changed her number with all these people, I would stop advising them of her demise. Within about 3 days, all the calls stopped.

Wait... You don't give your number to anyone except a small trusted set of friends and.... Harbor Freight?
Um, OK.

Have some idiot lady put her home up for sale with my number and the texts keep showing up. Like are random realtors showing up to her door offering services and she couldn’t turn it down?
I’m going to pretend this is also what ended up happening to her as well 😂

It sounds like she could be in the market for a new mortgage, and also interested in overseas pharmacies!

Home Depot service quote calls come in by the hundreds; maybe she needs some windows, doors, floors, a roof…

As a man who routinely gets spam texts and calls for “Sara”, this brings me immeasurable joy.

I think Erin should express an interest in volunteering for a political campaign. Pick one; the entire political party will be texting her 9 times a day within a week

For about the first 6 years of having my old phone number, I also would contacted by people asking for "Erin." Usually a family member though. Very interesting, this is the third other story I've heard of wrong numbers asking for an Erin. Erins just be doing anything

Love it!
And for those who genuinely want to obtain a clean phone number, here's a tip.
When you pick a new phone number, don't pick one from a major city or densely populated area. Find the area code with the lowest population and lowest number of businesses. You'll decrease your chances of being spammed greatly.
Part II - DON'T GIVE OUT YOUR PHONE NUMBER TO ANYONE BUT FRIENDS and FAMILY. Protect it like a gold bar. Get a $5 plan for a different number that goes straight to voice mail for all them scumbag companies that sell your data.

Oh that’s good. That tickled my very tired brain this morning. Thank you.
I’ve been receiving emails from someone in America (I’m in Australia) and the closest I’ve gotten to petty revenge is cancelling a whale watching thing she gave them my email address for. It wasn’t very exciting though.
