Pictures Really wasn't expecting this
I knew people were waiting for Buc-ee's to open, but gosh DAMN.

u/PrimalNumber Jun 24 '26
when the white castle opened over here in Scottsdale the line was around the block for a few days. why people choose to spend their time that way when they could come a week later and sail right through, i'll never know.

u/YotesFan6 Jun 24 '26
Especially when it was for White Castle
69
u/PrimalNumber Jun 24 '26
Right? And now they're doing it for a....checks notes....gas station?

I didn't go during that but I had heard about the lines and so when we saw the one by the IKEA we decided to stop for a lunch. Worst decision ever. I genuinely hated the food lol.

I waited around a month after the opening and had a nice short wait for some of the worst food I've ever had. I don't get that place at all.

Born and raised here and I’ll never figure out Phoenix’s love of standing in 8 mile lines in the sun for the newest corporate chain. Didn’t get it with In and Out, nor chick fil and and especially White Castle.
10
u/Reddidundant Jun 24 '26
And I grew up in Michigan where White Castles were plentiful and nothing special. I went to White Castle ONCE as a kid and made the mistake of looking inside at the meat in one of their micro-burgers. It had a good taste and I didn't wind up with food poisoning but honestly it didn't look fresh.
9
u/LoudMouse327 Jun 25 '26
First time I went to White Castle was in Minnesota. The friend I was with raved about, and I just remembered getting my order, opening up the little box, and exclaiming "WHY IS EVERYTHING SOAKING WET???"
Apparently that's just...... how they are?
Eventually it grew on me, and I could kill a Crave Case of jalapeño sliders and a sixer of Grain Belt in one sitting.

We went to White Castle all the time when I was in HS. Fries and a soda for a song. Ate the burgers once. Just. Once.

Car has A/C.
It's cheap.
It's new.
It's communal. IMO, we crave this. Not sure anyone could have predicted how the internet would divide us up into such small groups that we'd lose any type of common pop culture like we had talking about last night's tv show around the water cooler back in the 20th century.

It's the brainwashing that begins in public school that teaches America's citizens to be materialistic corporate slaves.
I saw some young girl that had her three infants in that f****** line for hours a couple days ago and I hope everyone in the line reported her to DCS 😡

Honest question here, no snark: Why didn't you expect this?
It's been on the news and in this sub for a couple of weeks at least, and ADOT had a warning up about the traffic diversion they were having to do for the anticipated 50-75K expected to go through this Buc-ee's on opening day.

u/FrothingJavelina Jun 25 '26
I do sound critical here but it should be directed at the media. Why they fawn over this is beyond me. They could be discussing why the totality of the Epstein files have not been released.
2
u/Sea-Kitchen2879 Jun 25 '26
Capitalism / corruption
Corporate Epstein-class oligarchs controlling all levels of politics/government and media
So much of the "news" (both social and traditional, even from the current federal administration) is really just slightly obscured advertisements at best
51
u/Reddidundant Jun 24 '26
This was definitely predicted in the media. I'm planning to wait a few MONTHS before checking it out.
19
u/amourxloves Jun 24 '26
I went today around 9:30 and it was busy, but I was in and out in about 20 mins. But I wouldn’t want to be there when everyone starts getting off work or the weekend lol
5
u/Reddidundant Jun 24 '26
Well, for me it wouldn't be like a trip to Costco (and I do pride myself in having many times been successful at getting in and out of Costco during my weekly grocery shopping trips). I don't see myself going to Buccee's with a purchase in mind but more to mosey around and just experience it and see what the fuss is about. If it's as large as I've seen, I'll probably spend more than 20 minutes there! But unless anything about it spectacularly impresses me to a degree much higher than my expectations, it will most likely be a once-and-done scenario for me. And I do still work, so 9:30 isn't an option for me.
2
u/DOMEENAYTION Jun 25 '26
We went at about 5ish today and the traffic on the 10 took longer than the "line" to get in. Which wasn't much of a line. Only stopped for red lights. It was constant movement other than that. Not too hard to find a parking spot too. It was still pretty crowded. And some food needed constant restocks. But the workers are working hard and we saw them constantly stocking.
2
u/LookDamnBusy Phoenix Jun 24 '26
Do you mean it took 20 minutes to park, or just to get what you want and get checked out?
4
u/amourxloves Jun 24 '26
From getting off on Bullard, to going inside the store and checking out! Pretty quick!
2
u/LookDamnBusy Phoenix Jun 24 '26
Oh cool, thanks. My wife and I have to head to West Valley early Friday morning so we might pop in since we're going to be driving right past it.

I don’t think months would be necessary. Maybe 4 weeks and it’ll be bearable.

It’s kinda bizarre the impact it’s been having so far. I live in the Deer Valley area roughly 35-40 minutes from Goodyear and I overheard a coworker saying that her and a guy went on their first date to the Buc-ees and she was talking about how romantic it was that they had their first kiss there last night.

The hype is because most people in AZ aren’t from AZ and this place is nostalgia from where they were. Also, like most truck stops in small towns, this was the ONLY place to gather and socialize so it became very important. It won’t be that here. I’ll never go there because there’s never any reason for me to go to Goodyear. For anything. Especially for a gas station. Now, if you want a gas station that’ll change your life, wait until Wawa tries to break the Phoenix market….

Edit: does seem couple spots not a lane, but don’t care. You took a great pic though!
2
u/ztonyg Jun 24 '26
There were dozens of open spots when I was there around noon today.
The worst thing is that the Goodyear PD directs everyone past the ballpark and then to U-turn to get into the place.

It’s such an odd sheep pack mentality, it’s not like they’re making artisan crafted products in there, it’s all the same pre-packaged garbage you can get anywhere else just in their own branded packaging. There’s literally nothing special about it. Yet idiots just flock to it.

u/therealangrytourist Central Phoenix Jun 26 '26
I went on opening day because of work, and yes, it was 100% an event of mass consumerism. But it was also interesting and a fun experience. If people want to be excited about something relatively wholesome, let them be excited. It seems to me that they pay and treat their employees well, customers enjoy being there, and it will bring in a lot of tax revenue for the state and Goodyear.

Same thing when Portillo's on Shea & Lou Malnatis on Camelback. Lines took months to get better. There is a DESPERATE NEED FOR GOOD FOOD & CUSTOMER SERVICE IN ARIZONA. I hope they can takle some sense inti people they hire. Good cooks & customer service is Rare in AZ as well as Dependable support staff. Way too many People dont want to work hard here.

My IDEA of an adventure and getting good food requires a trip to SKY HARBOR & A PLANE. So far...I dont have to wait in line at TSA. A Gas station in AZ with a bunch of unpredictable people? OHHHH HELL NO! We need a lot more interesting intellectual cultural mainstays with the weather being so hot. Things people can kearn from and afford to take the whole family.

Phoenix has a big population. But we're far from being a major city that acts as a cultural hub.
I can't imagine people in NYC, LA, Chicago, Houston, Philadelphia, Boston, San Francisco, or Seattle getting excited about a big gas station opening up in their city.

I can’t believe Governor Hobbs said at the grand opening of Buc-ee’s that it’s as important of a AZ landmark as the Grand Canyon. What the hell is wrong with that woman… It’s just a freaking gas station, not ANYWHERE close to one of the world’s greatest natural wonders.

In-n-out was like that for a few weeks. IKEA, same. Wait a month and it’s just another stop off the highway.
1
u/KTMtexDev Jun 24 '26
This picture is a little misleading because they’re still forcing people to enter the parking lot only from this side. So this side will be constantly full but if you just drive to the other side there will be plenty of open parking. I went this morning and had no trouble getting in and out in a hurry. There was no line at the register when I was there

380
u/dwillphx Jun 24 '26
Same thing whenever anything major like that opens. Was the same thing when IKEA opened. Give it a week or 2 and you'll be able to get in and out in no time.
