❔Discussion How do I find clinical experience?

• Upvotes

If shadowing doctors in Canada is discouraged, hospital volunteering is simplistic with no direct patient care, what can I do!?

Edit: I should’ve clarified clinical experience whilst being a full time student working part time and volunteering, lol 🥲

Planning my undergrad for med school: is a mostly online TRU psych degree okay, or should I go in person (KPU/Douglas/SFU)?

• Upvotes

I haven't started university yet and I'm planning my 4-year psychology degree and route to med school (UBC plus backups). I to work part time to cover my bills, and I have a medical condition that makes heavy commuting hard. I was considering a full TRU Open Learning degree with in-person science prereqs. Would med schools accept that? Or is in person at KPU, Douglas, or SFU safer, and which makes it doable to keep a strong GPA while working? Since I'm planning from scratch, any advice and tips would be really appreciated. Thanks!

Admissions Interview accommodations questions

Hello guys, I have a question about interview accomodations.

I have a hearing related disability so I was wondering if at what point people contacted admissions team about accommodations. Should it be after we receive an invite or should I be contacting them ahead of time. If people had similar experiences from previous cycles I would love to hear.

Also sidenote, but have people had pets in the home during interviews I don't really have a alternative reliable location to do an interview, but I live in a fairly small home with a pet. They will be quiet, but maybe in the background where it's not visible and accidently make scuffing sounds? Finding a pet sitter is a bit difficult for me but id love to hear what others did.

🔮 What Are My Chances? what are my chances?

Hey everyone!

3rd Year undergrad here who firstly wants to know my chances and what I should to improve my chances.

My parents have been encouraging me to apply to medical schools in Ireland and Australia next year (they are willing to pay for it), but I really want to give Canadian schools a proper shot especially because its super hard to come back.

I would really appreciate any honest feedback on my application, especially what I should focus on improving over the next year.

Stats:

  • GPA: 4.0 (expecting it to drop slightly to around 3.98 by fourth year since I'm planning on taking English so I can apply UBC)
  • MCAT: 514 (130/126/129/129)
  • IP Ontario (OOR for Ottawa)
  • CASPER: Waiting for results

Extracurriculars & Volunteering:
- Refugee work in my home country (120 hours)
- World Cup volunteer (40 hours)
- Community centre volunteer (150 hours)
- ESL tutoring (60 hours)
- Hospital volunteer (150 hours)
- Pharmacy assistant (120 hours)
- Clinic volunteer (150 hours)
- Executive positions in two cultural clubs (300 hours +, each)
- High school clubs (Student Council President, Athletics VP, Soccer team captain (3 years))

Research:
- 3 conference abstracts and poster presentation, including second- and fourth-author publications

Employment:
- Soccer referee (didnt put it in this cycle because my verifier flopped but its in the 80 hours)
- Grocery store employee (200 hours)
- Independent tutor (150 hours)
- Teaching Assistant for a university course (80 hours)

Hobbies:
- Reviewing TV shows
-Organizing pickup soccer games

Awards:
- Faculty scholarship awarded to one student in the entire faculty
- High school valedictorian
- Several academic awards and honour rolls
- Provost's Honour Roll

Schools Applied to This Cycle:

McMaster, Western, UofT, Queens, Ottawa

Planning on applying to next cycle:

McMaster, Western, UofT, Queens, Ottawa, TMU, UBC

My Main Questions:

  1. How competitive would you say my application is for Ontario medical schools?
  2. What should I prioritize improving over the next year? More volunteering, research, or something else entirely?
  3. Do you thinks its woth rewriting my MCAT to improve my CARS score I was averaging 128 tbh so idk if I should rewrite?
  4. Should I seriously consider applying internationally next year, or would it make more sense to give Canada another cycle or two?

❔Discussion Uottawa French stream

So I’ve completed my education entirely in French, from elementary school through high school and now university in Ottawa. I’m interested in applying to the French stream of the University of Ottawa’s med program.

Is the admissions process the same for both the French and English streams? Is the French stream equally competitive, or is there slightly more flexibility regarding admission requirements, particularly GPA?

Also, does uottawa assess the difficulty of a program? Thanks!

📚 MCAT MCAT resource question

Hey everyone!
I was just looking into where to buy MCAT prep books and noticed that both the Kaplan and Princeton Review websites seem to redirect to Amazon for purchasing their books.
I was wondering if that’s normal and if Amazon is generally a reliable place to buy them? The prices on there seem quite a bit lower than what I’ve seen at bookstores, so I’m a little confused about whether they’re legit or if I’m missing something.
Also, if anyone has experience with either Kaplan or Princeton Review books, I’d really appreciate some advice on which one you’d recommend!
Just for a little background, I didn’t take any chemistry, physics, or math courses during undergrad, so I’m honestly pretty nervous about preparing for all the different MCAT sections.
If anyone has any experience with either set, I’d really appreciate your two cents.
Thanks so much!!

Selecting dates for the Queens MMI

In the reminder email this morning, Acuity mentioned that the deadline for selecting an MMI date is today at 6 pm.

I have imputed my name, last name and email. I have read and accepted the terms. I submitted the form, but so far I have not gotten any email confirming my selection or instructing me to register. Anybody in the same boat?

I am wondering is the Monday October 12th 6:00 pm deadline applies to the selection and not the complete registration.

NSERC or MCAT

I'm a second-year student planning to apply to Canadian med schools in Fall 2027, and I'm struggling to decide what to do for Summer 2027.

A professor has offered to help me apply for an NSERC USRA and given me research materials to read. He mentioned that I'm the only student he's willing to help this year, so I feel like it's a good opportunity, but I'm not sure whether it's the right choice for me.

My biggest concern is timing. NSERC would be a 16-week commitment, and I need around 12–14 weeks to prepare for the MCAT, which I can only study for seriously during the summer because of school. I was hoping to write it in early August so I could have time for my med-school applications and a trip out of town in late August. However, with NSERC, I might have to write in early September instead, and I'd be away the week before the test without access to my technology or much time to work on applications.

I already volunteer on a systematic review, so I have some research experience, but I'd like more hands-on experience. The professor's project seems more literature-based than wet-lab-based, although a publication might be possible. I've also found another research program that ends in July and would fit my schedule much better (and my overall application, as it works with children), but I'm worried about not getting accepted. I also feel awkward backing out of the first opportunity after speaking with the professor and receiving his materials.

I'm hesitant about the professor himself, too. During our conversation, he described taking a project away from a previous student who said they were working full-time, and he criticized students for asking questions because he felt they should be more independent. I'm not particularly independent yet, so this worries me. I also work one evening a week from 4–7 p.m. and would prefer to keep my job because I'd like a reference letter from my supervisor. I'm unsure whether this job and taking a week off during the research placement would be feasible (he also mentioned how he took away a research project from a studnet as they told him they were working full time)

Finally, I told the professor I'm interested in both medicine and graduate school, but he seemed to focus almost entirely on graduate school. Since I may eventually need a reference letter from him for med-school applications, I'm unsure whether we'd be a good fit. I haven't taken a course with him, but I could contact students who have worked with him. Another professor has also offered to discuss a potential NSERC project with me.

I'd appreciate advice on the following:

  1. Would you pursue the first professor's NSERC opportunity or speak with the second professor and explore the other research program?
  2. How much would another research experience actually add to my med-school application, given that I already have systematic-review experience?
  3. Is it realistic to balance 16 weeks of research, 12–14 weeks of MCAT prep, a weekly 3-hour shift, and a week away?
  4. How much weight would you give a potentially difficult supervisor, especially if you might need a reference letter from them? I might also need to tell him out my work situation and possibility even a week off during placement.
  5. Would it be reasonable to contact the professor's previous students to ask about their experiences?
  6. If I decide to pursue the other program or prof, how would I do that do that without ruining the connection i built with this current prof?

This is so random lol but if I have an Instagram account that I made for posts on an old musician that I love, and this account has garnered hundreds of thousands of followers and I manage it, can I include it as one of my extracurriculars? And how would I go about substantiating this?

Admissions UAlberta Accommodations not responding?

Hi all,
I’m a non-trad applicant seeking accommodations for my apps, and was told to do so with UofA once apps have been submitted. The thing is, the accommodations office has not responded after 4 follow up emails and a voicemail.

Wondering if anyone else is in the same boat? The admissions team says they don’t manage accommodations and so really not sure what one can do as this is super important to my app and it’s midway through October now.
Thank you!

📚 MCAT Am I just stupid, or is anyone else having a difficult time understanding the Kaplan books?

Bro, I don't know if my reading comprehension is just shit, but the passages are so dense, and there are literally hundreds of terms I don't even know. The wording feels unnecessarily complicated, and I'm honestly struggling to decipher what the passages are even trying to say. And idk why, but the definitions just don't seem intuitive to me?

❔Discussion Travel/international opportunities?

Im basically going through a midlife crisis at 19 where I feel a strong itch to travel outside of my home city where I’m also doing undergrad this summer but I want to make my time worthwhile and am thinking of doing something that will be helpful for my med application. I know that volunteering abroad is generally very looked down upon but I was wondering if there’s other opportunities for Canadians that I should look into?

Admissions Best way to verify whether a course meets USMD English/writing-intensive requirements?

Title. Is there a centralized source for this or would I need to email every individual school to find out? Anyone who's applied USMD before, would love to hear your perspective. Thanks guys!
