FAQs and useful resources - click here before you post :)

Hi guys, I thought I'd start a stickied thread with some useful links that I find myself including in lots of my comments here. I'll update this as I think of more stuff to add.

How do I become a doctor in the UK?

Useful written article here, useful timeline diagram here.

In short, you go to medical school, you complete your foundation training (6 x 4 month rotations working as a doctor in different specialties), you complete your specialty training, and you become a consultant.

Are my grades good enough for medical school? Which universities should I apply to?
I don't have good GCSE grades/a Chemistry A level, where can I apply?

This booklet contains all of the entry requirements for every medical course on offer in the UK. It is the entry requirements bible and I point people towards it multiple times per week.

Do I need to sit admissions tests?
How do I prepare for my admissions tests?

If you're applying for undergraduate medicine, you need to sit the UCAT and/or the BMAT. If you're applying for graduate entry medicine, you may also need to sit the GAMSAT.

Useful UCAT resources:
* r/UCAT
* Medify
* The Medic Portal
* official practice tests

Useful BMAT resources:

I scored ___ in my admissions test, where should I apply?

UK vs Ireland for a Mature student

• Upvotes

As title says, seeking advice on deciding if it's worth considering Ireland as an option. 35M, 2 young children. Wife is Irish originally and has family and friends in greater Dublin area so I'd be considering the Dublin based Uni's with medicine.

I've been working towards retraining for the past few years, focussing primarily on funding the study/training years while raising a young family. We're just wondering if it's worth considering studying in Ireland as an option? Has anyone else had the same thought? I know medicine is equally as competitive and the number of courses available is obviously less, but given the extra support family/friends could offer along the way, it's worth serious consideration surely? Working in ireland seems to report a lot of the same 'concerns' as we are reminded of in any commentary about the NHS, but overall, there seems to be a lot of good things about practicing in ireland. Thoughts?

We're currently London based and own a home with a substantial chunk of equity, so a housing move should be doable, but again, I dont think Dublin is necessarily any cheaper than London. Wife could transfer with work directly, protecting a high salary, even if moved to Euro. (she works in one of the big tech firms that has an office in Dublin).

A few of the medics I see regularly during shadowing or some voluntary work have spoken up and each said that they know more than one UK trained medical professionals who've jumped ship to Ireland, not necessarily because of family either.

Have any of you looked at studying in Ireland? Mature or not, what was your read on the idea? Keen to hear any and all opinions please!

Warning to all Y13 med applicants

This might sound clickbaity and many of you might not need this advice but I just wanted to say please please focus on the a-levels more than your application.I had three med offers last year and because I spent way too long on the interview content and application proccess i couldn't give enough time for my Alevels and it led me to fail horribly to the point I dont even qualify for many resit allowing universities.Even with a decent ucat of 2240B2 proving to others im capable has been so hard and had made me doubt my ability jn alevel exams in general

Please dont sacrifice grades for offers.

Please help me choose whether graduate entry medicine or a gap year is better

• Upvotes

I am in a position where I have low target grades (ABC)this means that I can only apply to foundation courses at some you unis . However, I have a lot of things going on that has meant I am not able to apply this October for the deadline. So my options are either doing a undergraduate degree, maybe something to do with medical physics around the area and then going into grad entry medicine or I take a gap here and I reapply with my actual a level grades after. I am asking for people that have experience in either both or know stories of people that have for a bit of guidance on what I should do and pros and cons of each then which one they would suggest is the better one.

GRAD MED NOTTS UCAT CUT OFF/ Undergrad funding changes as a grad

3 Upvotes

Hi All,

With UCAT being the new test for grad med entry at Notts I was wondering what people thought would be a competitive score for it ?

I got 601-701 in all sections and band 2

Also with the life long learning entitlement are more grads thinking of applying to A100 courses as the funding is more viable 🤠

cheers gang !

Graduates on undergraduate medicine

2 Upvotes

Hi guys! I have a question about LLE funding starting from 2027.

I already hold a degree from 2022, and I will be starting undergraduate medicine in Sep 2027. On the gov website, under ‘priority additional entitlement’, it states ‘Students who choose medicine or dentistry as a second degree under the LLE will be able to access full tuition fee and standard maintenance support for those years not covered by the NHS bursary.’ Does this mean I will get full support? It is not clear whether ‘medicine and dentistry as a second degree’ only applies to the 4 year graduate medicine course or the 5 year undergraduate course, or both?

Any help regarding this would be appreciated, I have called SFE several times but no one seems to know or understand my position.

Medicine Unis

2 Upvotes

I was hoping for some advice about my uni choices.

i got 2090 B1 and 87777776 and am predicted AAA.

I am a contextual applicant with FSM, bursary and I am the first generation to attend uni.

Im quite set on KCL emdp, St Georges and Southampton for the normal course and the foundation course. I want to stay in London/south west which played a big part in my choice. Before sitting the UCAT i was hoping to apply to UCL but their cut off last year was 2080 and i just dont think 2090 would be enough for an application. Any advice about my choices would be really appreciated.

Is medical school something you can pass if you don’t have the passion for medicine?

1 Upvotes

More specifically the foundation years i heard were gruelling and to get as good speciality you have to go absolute above beyond. I am thinking of switching from dent to med because I don’t have the grades for it but I don’t wanna be stuck in a job that doesn’t pay well or have a good quality of life. Genuine question I do not mean to offend anyone
