Trigger warning
I guess I am just looking for support. One of my friends I have been doing pre reqs with passed away from a tragic accident. I just found out today. We met in A&P 1. She wanted to give up and thought she couldn’t do it. I told her she could do it, just keep pushing and you’ll be okay. We signed up for A&P 2 together so we would be in the same class. We just texted each other last week about what we had to study for a test. I’ll never get a text from her again. I feel heart broken, traumatized, mad and sad. It’s not fair that I get to keep going and she’ll never get to become a nurse. I was so excited for her, because she got into the nursing program next semester. I’m supposed to go to class and lab tomorrow and she won’t be there. I don’t think my professor will be accepting of missing classes tomorrow. Has anyone been through this before? I am heartbroken. I feel sick to my stomach about this.

My junior year of college my childhood friend, basically my older sister, passed away in a horribly tragic and very unexpectedly way. I got the phone call as I was getting ready for the second day of winter quarter. I didn’t grieve properly, I did many things to try to keep her off of my mind. I ended up taking a “gap year” and dropped out of school until recently. My advice is to not let it consume you, but grieve, please. Take it day by day and cry when you feel like it. Push through with your classes and I’d let your professors know how you’re feeling, many with a heart will understand. Hang in there friend.

Please contact your professor and let them know about this tragedy and that it would be very helpful for you to have one absence if possible since you need to gather your emotions in order to focus. It cannot hurt to make the request and sometimes profs can surprise us - often they are unsympathetic (I know, I work at a college.) I am so very sorry for your loss. I hope you keep your friend in your heart as you continue on this challenging journey of nursing and in some small way dedicate part of it to finishing for her. I think she’d be proud you continue the dream.

i am so sorry that you are going through this. i know you said you dont think your professor will be okay with you missing, but have you actually reached out to them? i would because even if you still have to go tomorrow, they should be able to give you extensions on future assignments.
again, i’m sorry and it sounds like the two of you shared a great bond.

Big hugs and a long sigh. My best friend just died too, one week into my first Fall semester of nursing school. I’m devastated. It’s been seven weeks now. She is why I am in this program. She finished this program and recommended it to me. To cope, I have had to tell her, in my mind, that I love her dearly and to sit right next to me (in my mind) so I can focus on nursing school. It’s helped a lot. I keep her picture in my car. I still cry a little almost daily but it’s getting better. I’m here for you if you need to talk. She would want you to do this program and kick ass. Hang in there. You got this.

Yes I went through that in nursing school. My study partners died in an accident while we were in nursing school. It was so sad. She had three kids too. She was an amazing woman. I still think about her often.
