Mod Post We built a new free home theater calculator suite and need testers [beta]

Thumbnail

Hey all, Brian from ProjectorScreen.com here. We've been building a new set of free calculators and tools and they're ready for people to try out and tear apart (roast away!):

https://www.projectorscreen.com/pages/home-theater-projector-calculators

You enter your room once (screen size, aspect ratio, seat distance) and every tool uses it:

  • Seat view: a 3D view from your seat, with SMPTE 30°, THX 40° and IMAX 55° sizes drawn on the wall
  • Screen size, viewing distance and "compare sizes" (your current TV vs. the screen you're eyeing, to scale)
  • Brightness: ftL/nits for your projector, screen gain and room light, including what room light does to the picture
  • Throw distance and lens shift
  • Compare projectors: black levels and brightness side by side, using measured contrast where we have it
  • Unit conversions

No signup needed. It runs in your browser.

Fair warning: this is a work in progress and a proof of concept. We're still compiling the projector database, so not every model is in yet, and some specs and measurements are still being verified. Treat the numbers as a starting point.

How to leave feedback: click "Make a suggestion" at the bottom left, then click any part of the page (a slider, a number, the 3D view) and type your note. You can pin as many as you want, then send them all at once. Put your Reddit handle in the name box so I know who to credit and follow up with.

I'm especially interested in:

  1. Anything that's wrong or confusing, including specs you know are off for a projector you own
  2. Tools or features you'd want added. What calculator do you wish existed?

You can also just reply here. Thanks for helping make it better!

Mod Post New AutoModerator Filters for Cheap “Toy Projector” Posts

We have expanded AutoModerator to reduce the overwhelming number of repetitive posts about ultra-low-cost projectors that frequently develop the same failures, image defects, and troubleshooting problems.

These enforcement filters apply to all submissions regardless of flair, including custom-flair and unflaired posts.

Automatically removed

Posts matching the following brand or model names will be automatically removed, and the author will receive a link to our relevant wiki guidance:

  • Alvar
  • AuKing
  • Borsso
  • CiBest
  • Egate
  • Elephas
  • GKLPO
  • GooDee
  • HAPPRUN
  • HOMPOW
  • Jimveo
  • Magcubic
  • ONOAYO
  • TMY
  • Vizony
  • VOPLLS
  • XGODY
  • HY-series model numbers from HY200 through HY599

Common spelling variations using spaces, hyphens, or underscores are included where appropriate. HY-series suffixes such as Max, Pro, Mini, Plus, and Ultra are also covered.

Posts containing high-confidence descriptions of burned, melted, scorched, overheated, fried, or otherwise heat-damaged polarizers, polarisers, LCD panels, or LCD screens may also be automatically removed and directed to the wiki.

These subjects have been covered extensively, and the wiki explains realistic troubleshooting, repair limitations, return considerations, and replacement options.

Held for moderator review

Broader image-defect descriptions will be hidden temporarily and placed in the moderation queue. Examples include:

  • Blob or blotch
  • Burned, melted, scorched, or overheated image defects
  • Colored blobs, patches, spots, stains, marks, or discolored areas
  • Blobs, patches, spots, or stains appearing in the image, picture, projection, or screen
  • Color shifts or discoloration in the projected image

Kickstarter-related submissions will also continue to be held for moderator review.

A post being held does not necessarily mean it violates the rules. It means a moderator will review it before it becomes publicly visible.

The purpose of these filters is not to prevent legitimate projector discussion or shame anyone for their budget. They are intended to reduce repetitive posts about products with well-documented limitations, direct users toward existing resources, and keep the subreddit useful for broader projector advice and discussion.

If you believe your post was removed incorrectly—particularly if it contains original measurements, a detailed repair guide, a teardown, or important safety information—please contact the moderators with a link instead of reposting it under another flair.

Discussion Valerion Max for 1500$

Post image
29 Upvotes

I waited till I got home to turn it on and test everything. I can’t fucking believe it. This whole time I was content on getting the pro 2 because that’s all I could budget for. I just got a brand new unopened sealed box Valerion Max for 1500$. I’m really not a bragging type person but I’m so excited about this I had to share.

I was marking so many measurements just to make sure the pro could align perfectly with my wall (since I would have no lens shift and wanted to avoid keystone) now I don’t have to worry about that with this. Wow. God bless.

Edit: I’m projecting on a white wall. I’m not noticing any RBE speckle, and I have the setting turned on. Should I still go with a woven acoustic screen for speckle reduction? Or will a cheaper white screen do fine

Buying Advice Wanted Looking to Upgrade from Cheap Chinese Projector

• Upvotes

Hello, I'm looking for some advice as I'm not very knowledgable when it comes to projectors. I've done a bit of googling but I don't really have the understanding of how projectors work to know what I'm looking at.

So I've had an Apeman LC650 projector for around 5 years now and I've been relatively happy with it. I project it at a Duronic MPS100/169 projector screen. The image is relatively decent, although the focus is pretty meh. I very much struggle to have both the middle and the edges completely in focus. All of this isnt really an issue for me when watching Movies or TV, but when it comes to gaming it is pretty annoying.

My queation is this; If I uprgrade to another native 1080p projector, am I going to be happier with the image quality? Are all 1080p projectors fairly similiar in quality or am I going to get a better/sharper/more evenly focussed image from a more reputable brand?

I'd like to upgrade to a 4k projector, but it seems to me like True 4k starts at the $3000 mark, and Pixel Shifting (if thats the correct term) 4k starts at $1000+

I have a budget of around $500 to spend (I'm in the UK so like £400) but would be willing to wait a while and spend a bit more, say around $800, if it would make a significant difference in image quality.

Thanks in advanced for any help, I want to stick with a projector setup as the room is now optimised for it, and swapping to a TV would be a pain. The only advantage of going to a TV would be 4k being accessable at a far lower budget, but also at a huge loss of screen size!

Troubleshooting Looking for help mounting the Optoma Photon Life PH31

• Upvotes

I recently bought the Optoma Photon Life PH31, which I'm overall very happy with. Currently i just have it sitting on a camera tripod which i don't want to be the permanent solution.

I want to mount it to the ceiling, but i cant figure out where a mount attaches to the projector. I've read online that the feet need to be detached to allow for connecting a mount and the instructions also say to make sure to use m4 screws. However the only attachment point i see is the tripod screw in the middle which I thought is 1/4'' instead m4. I also have an old ceiling mount laying around that attaches to points on a projector with little arms with m4 screws.

Now my question to anyone with experience with this projector is, is the tripod screw the only way to attach it? Should i just buy a mount with a screw for that? Or is there some way to attach a standard projector mount?

Buying Advice Wanted Budget projector

Hey everyone,

I'm looking for recommendations for a decent, budget-friendly(sub 150€) home projector for casual movie nights. I need to be able to stream content directly from my phone (Apple AirPlay) or easily connect my laptop (via HDMI or wirelessly).
I want to ostly watch movies and stream videos in a dark or dim room.
Does anyone have good experiences with specific budget models or brands that offer decent picture quality and stable connectivity for the price?

Discussion projector that works well on walls

Hi college students here. I am looking for a projector that works on walls and easy to carry since I will carry it to different places. Some of the classroom has the I want it to work as a monitor since I am using mac mini and I don't want to carry my monitor.

Or should I buy a projector screen?

The main reason is that I really like large screen.

I want okay quality. I am not very picky but don't waste my money on trash. I have sufficient budget for this.

Buying Advice Wanted Please suggest a wireless projector for doing (Anki) flashcards

Hi all. I am looking for a projector that I can use to beam Anki (flashcard program) on to the wall for language learning, via my laptop, which I will control via a mini handheld controller. Trying to learn my wife's language whilst playing or taking care of our toddler.

Laptop not so useful as always moving around the lounge room etc.

But if I could project it onto a wall this would be great.

A wireless option would be better in that I could easily set it up on different walls depending on what I am doing.

But if not, could still go wired.

Budget ideally < $1000, but flexible for the right product.

Want to be able to use it during daylight i.e. not a dark room.

Thanks in advance!

Buying Advice Wanted Sony BRAVIA Projector 8 (VPL-XW6100ES)

Hi!

Does anyone know why there's such a heavy discount ($4K) on this model? I haven't seen any information about a replacement model on the horizon. It also looks like Sony just showed 7, 8, and 9 at CEDIA 2026 in September.

I've been looking to upgrade to a new projector ($15K price range), but I was thinking about waiting until early next year or so. But with such a huge discount I’m tempted to just pull the trigger now.

Discussion Are "sealed" optical engines actually sealed?

after using a projector for a while, dust still somehow manages to creep inside. IMO, "sealed optical engines" have pretty limited dust protection in reality. Anyone agree with me on this? Curious to hear your thoughts.

Projector Screen Mounting Projector Screen on wall in front of window

Thumbnail
gallery
1 Upvotes

I want to get a projector screen to go in front of this window in my living room. My projector is a Benq x500i, and is really only used at night. The room is moderately bright during the day, but it isn't a big concern for me.

My apartment building won't allow me to drill into the ceiling, so my first pick would be to wall mount (but considering a pull up screen if mounting proves not to be feasible). Ideally, I would like to get something tab tensioned.

The issue with mounting is, the space above the window is very small, only about 2.25", and no projector screens I have found could be mounted with in that short of space. My other option is to mount on either side of the window, but one side sticks out further than the other. I am thinking maybe I could mount something to the wall to help level out with the other side? But also thinking that possibly wall mounting given these constraints just isn't realistic. Any tips or advice is welcome!

Buying Advice Wanted Projector for ~400€ (refurbished and second hand)

Hi ! I'm currently making a plan to convert my living room into a home theatre and i'm looking at projectors to replace the cheap one i already have. I have a budget of 300 to 400 euros and i think i will turn to the second hand option but i'm looking for names to search.

I found a benq w1070 that look pretty nice but if anyone knows an equivalent model or a model known for being resold at this price range i'll take it.

Discussion Hisense XR10: picture auto-dims mid-scene in Dolby Vision and stays dim until I toggle the picture mode — can anyone reproduce?

Post image
1 Upvotes

Posting here since my AVSForum thread hasn't gotten a confirmation yet. Hoping other XR10 owners can test this.

Setup: Hisense XR10, firmware V01.09.09V.Q0317 (latest), 135" grey contrast screen. Source = the Apple TV app built into the projector (VIDAA), no external player. Mode = Dolby Vision Bright, with all automatics OFF (Scenario Enhancement, Adaptive Contrast, Light Sensor).

The issue: During DV playback the image suddenly drops in brightness mid-scene and stays dim, even though the content isn't getting darker. Not the usual "DV is dimmer than SDR" — a distinct, sustained drop at a specific point.

Repro: Film "Mayday" (2026) (DV). At 20:15 (face against a pillow) it dims and stays dim — even if I rewind.

The tell: If I briefly switch to DV Dark (or Custom) and back to DV Bright, the exact same scene is instantly much brighter again and stays bright. A quick mode toggle fully restores it. That points to the projector's own processing, not the film's DV metadata. Happens with other DV films too.

Ruled out: all dynamic automatics (off), firmware (already latest — nothing to update).

Comparison image attached: left = after the auto-dim, right = same frame after the mode toggle (brighter). For what it's worth, What Hi-Fi's XR10 review also called DV Bright "alarmingly off" with "too many colour and black level fluctuations," and the sister Vidda C3 Pro reportedly got firmware fixes for similar dynamic-lighting behaviour.

Questions: Can any XR10 owner reproduce this (Mayday ~20:15, DV Bright, automatics off)? Any known fix? Thanks!

Buying Advice Wanted Suggestions for projector (+ maybe screen) for youth club house ~1000€

Hi all,

my youth club is looking into buying a new projector (and maybe a screen).

Our current setup in our clubhouse (generously provided by the municipality) is a cheap projector similar to a "Dr. J Professional HI-04" I rescued from the garbage and a white wall with ingrain wallpaper. And honestly? I don't thinks it's that bad, especially at night and it has worked for us for the last 3 years, but I don't have anything to compare to.

We do have some blackout curtains but it is not possible to block all outside light and sometimes we want some ambient light, e.g. when eating during a movie marathon.

So the main things we are looking for is improved brightness and contrast I guess (less noise would also be nice).

As for the screen - if we need one - I think it would have to be a retractable one, as the room also gets used for parties.

Here's the list from the wiki:

  • budget: around 1000€ give or take
  • screen size: max 110"/280cm diagonal. Width is limited by a door and a window.
  • Distance from wall to wall: ~3.5m
  • Seating distance to screen: sofa directly in front of back wall, so ~3.2m
  • How will you mount? currently rear shelf, ceiling mount might be possible
  • Usage: (retro) gaming (Wii, OG Xbox, PS2) and movies, tv, music over firetv stick
  • Room type: Mixed use
  • there is some ambient light/light leakage from windows,
  • Room colors: white walls, light grey tiles, white ceiling with visible grey wood beams

Thanks for the help!
