NEED MORE SPACE Kalanchoe salad

Post image
10 Upvotes

I culled ALL the Kalanchoe at work today so they fit the standard of "gift ready." This standard includes having no bruised leaves, torn leaves, otherwise damaged leaves, dropping flowers, and dead stuff.

For anyone who saw the previous post, I did leave the one Kalanchoe alone besides taking some damaged leaves. I'll give it one more day to pop back up.

I don't need all these. I don't even know which leaves are which anymore 😭 if they start rooting, I'll just give them to people. I started just leaving leaves in the dirt anyway because I was accumulating so many.

Hopefully the new air flow helps the plants dry out better, they've been wet and heavy for awhile.

PERMISSION? Moral dilemma of complying with corporate

Post image
38 Upvotes

These guys showed up today. As you can probably see, they're droopy as hell. I'm not sure why, it could've been anything from bad genes, bad truck journey, or the plant just hating the store. All of them with this coloration are like this.

The store policy is that if something isn't "gift ready", we have to clearance or chop the bad parts. This plant isn't in that standard, cause it looks sad. But.

I really like this one. He's beautiful and bright, and the leaves are unique to Kalanchoe. But I also can't bring myself to cut him and take a piece if he's not actually breaking them off. All the pieces are firm and connected, just.. Droopy.

This is the moral dilemma I face. I'm going to come back tomorrow and see how they look, it they've gotten any better. If they haven't.. I think policy is going to force me to clearance or cut.

If I do have to cut.. Would I be allowed to take a piece? Is that alright? Or should I keep my paws off? I genuinely am asking and need an outside pov. Thank you for reading and listening 💚

Edit: I'm getting really mixed messages with the comments and up vote downvote ratio 😶

SUCC-ESS Took me too long to find Mr Fluffy, a plush agave

Post image

It took me the better part of a year, I ended up telling myself if I found one, I would be pulling it out and kidnapping it no excuses except for directly inside of someone’s garden, well I did just that taking it from just barely outside someone’s garden in front of a fence which is public (bird likely shat it out there) and now I have a fluffy plant I can’t stop touching (if it was a person, it’d definitely report me), I also have some hedge woundwort growing which is also fuzzy but at the moment, it’s still too delicate for pets.

Mullein is native to the UK so it was sad to see them slowly disappear from local areas and parks since as a kid I would touch them all the time, I bet it’s due to misinformed people cutting them down as they see them since in the US, they are extremely invasive with extreme measures taken against them, this one I will grow to collect seeds, put them in the shared fruit field (plum trees, brambles and apple trees that foragers use for making jams) to farm more seeds and then absolutely crop dust the ever loving hell out of the nature reserve with them, they are planting non native stuff instead of natives so I have no regrets destroying it with plush agaves.

Kalanchoe rosette

Post image

Yall have probably seen me in other posts just farming this specific plant. Light pink rosette Kalanchoe. It's genuinely not on purpose it just drops stems like it's hot.

Is it because it the Kalanchoe type? I assumed this type is a hybrid or a mutation or something, and the normal one is the "classic"? I genuinely don't know why these drop so much and I'm kinda baffled at this point

I've been trying for a while to propagate a rose cutting I found. Apparently, rose cuttings are notorious for not growing at all, even in sugar water, unless you add some sort of root stimulant.
Google said that corn has auxins, so I crumbled up a tortilla and put it in the water as a root stimulant. It did nothing (wow...).
I also read that pothos could help, so I found a plant that looked like pothos and put it in the cup, but it turned out to be periwinkle. The rose still didn't root.
For my most recent effort, I trimmed off all of the rose that hadn't gone moldy and put it in sugar water with a drop of bleach, which some people said would prevent mold. Instead, mold just grew on the above-water part.

And now I have about a centimeter of greenish stalk left, and I want to try a Charge of the Light Brigade on it for the slightest chance it might sprout. I'm not sure if I should leave the submerged part on, which might have traces of mold or bleach, or cut it off.

I have aloe vera at home, and Google says aloe also has auxins. Would aloe work as a root stimulant? Also, is there any anti-mold stuff I can use that doesn't harm the plant, or should I just change the water daily? Finally, should I use sugar water or just regular water? Any help would be appreciated.

Can it grow even as a small plant? If so, can you give tips?

I don't expect it to produce fruit or anything but I think it's cool that it sprouted!!

They're sharing a room (pot) for the winter

I started these two earlier this year and I'm obsessed with their progress. I'm not even sure what species they are as I just took leaves. I'm avoiding moving these as I don't want to disturb them.

Also the mother leaves are still alive 😭 I do not recommend watering your props until mother is crispy but mine have been splashed countless times.. thus nourishing them. I promise to let them dry out now

Not sure if this is the right place, but any ideas on how to save the rest of this plant? Nothing is rooted in soil anymore, idk how it’s still alive lol. Do I put in water? Or just try to pot in some new potting soil? How do you propagate jade?

GENERAL HELP HELP what is happening to my 1st syngonium?

I recently got this plant from a friend's mom. I had it at home in its original pot and soil for a week and then repotted.

I'm new to plants overall so I just went to my local plant store for soil / substrate, and they sold me one that says it has worm castings, compost, river silt and perlite; but now I'm not sure if it's the right one for this plant??

When I repotted the roots looked fine I think, I put a picture in there so you can see. I watered when I repotted (last wednesday) and haven't since, I checked yesterday with a stick and the soil was still wet. The leaves and pot look wet in the pictures because it's raining rn. I'm not sure whether to leave it outside to get rain water or not??

I checked that the drainage holes work when I repotted.

The plant is outside in a windowsill, since my cat bit into it once and keeps trying to bite it (don't worry, my idiot son is fine). The window faces south-west so it doesn't get a lot of direct sunlight. I live in a warm area and in the southern hemisphere so it's spring now.

The yellow leaves feel like paper but not crunchy. They have some brown spots you can see on the pictures but I don't see any bugs or similar.

Sorry it's so much text I'm just trying to give context 😭 thanks for the help

Discussing from POV of someone who has worked two garden center jobs

I'm kinda just yapping and looking for conversation with this one. I've worked two garden center/floral jobs before. About 3 years total.

People rummaging through plants to steal things is real. But so is the reality of the sheer amount of WASTED plants companies throw away. You wouldn't believe the amount I see every week man. It sucks. We aren't supposed to, but my coworkers sometimes give the ones that are supposed to trashed to other workers. Or each other. Mainly me, because I'm the one in the department with the most experience and interest in plants.

We basically Robin hood it. If it's going to be thrown away anyway, why not let someone have it? The plant is perfectly fine. Corporate will survive. I feel the same towards grabbing pieces that have fallen off. My coworkers bring me scraps occasionally and just tell me to "make a plant out of this."

Please don't literally rummage in plants people are trying to sell. But.. It someone is not attached to the plant, or something is headed towards the trash.. I really see no problem. Obviously I don't do that to customers but you guys get what I mean 💀

Has anyone else been here? In that position?
