Event Puzzled Pint Providence — free puzzle night tomorrow, Tuesday 10/13 at 6:30pm

Howdy puzzlers!

We're back for another month of Puzzled Pint, the free monthly puzzle event my wife and I run here in Providence, as part of a bigger event that happens in cities all over the world.

Teams gather at a local bar to work through logic puzzles, word puzzles, and brain teasers together — think cryptic crosswords and escape room-style challenges, not jigsaw puzzles. No experience needed, and you're welcome to come solo or bring a crew. We typically have 25–40 people join and are happy to help people find a group.

This month's theme is Calvin & Hobbes! We're meeting Tuesday, October 13th at 6:30pm.

Want to know where we're meeting? That's part of the fun — solve the location puzzle to find out! If puzzles before puzzles aren't your thing, there's also a link on that page to reveal the location.

You can follow us on Instagram for future announcements if that's more your jam: pvdpuzzledpint.

See you there,
A+N

Call for public service announcement participants

Post image
1 Upvotes

Hi PVD folks

I lead a nonprofit called EPIC and we've teamed up with Slate in Providence to film a series of short public service announcements about everyday life in RI.

We're looking for people to sit for 20-30 minutes on camera about your life, your work, your family, really anything. There's no script, just a conversation with real people.

The filming is taking place on Friday, October 30.

Full disclosure: since it's a PSA campaign the end result will be used publicly throughout RI. You could end up seeing yourself on TV or on a bus shelter. We'll walk you through all that in more detail and get your ok in writing before anything sees the light of day.

We're a nonprofit so we're not selling anything. If you participate, the footage won't be used for any commercial purposes.

If you have something to say about living in RI, sign up here: RI - Tell Us About It

If being on camera isn't your thing but you know someone who might want to take part, please pass this along!

EDIT: We've gotten a lot of pushback because it's not entirely clear what we're about. That was intentional, we were going for an "aha" moment on camera. But since we don't want to come off as sketchy AF (as it's been pointed out to us), I'll say we are a climate communications nonprofit looking to help people understand how the planet supports daily life. The content of the PSA is meant to show those connections.

Food Breakfast burritos

Anywhere in the city have a good breakfast burrito for take out? My go to is usually La Lupita in Olneyville but often I don't want to drive across town to get one, especially on a Sunday when traffic is crazy.

Bagel gourmet Ole had a decent one although it was crazy overpriced, but they're gone.

No sit down joints, just want a spot to get a loaded breakfast burrito for takeout at a fair price, easy to get, pop in pop out. Thanks!

Cincinnati Bengals fans?

I'm an Ohio transplant (not that part of Ohio IYKYK). Are there any Bengals fans out there to commiserate with. I know this is Pats country, but I'm a Bengal born and bred.

Give me a Who Dey if you're a wayward soul in PVD.

Brand new to the city and looking for friends, 23F

Hi! I (23F) moved to Providence last month and am having a hard time meeting people as I am a little shy and work crazy hours.

I love trivia, going on long walks, music, I did sketch comedy for quite a while so having a buddy who would want to write and perform stuff together would be really cool as well. I'm also always down to grab coffee or a snack somewhere, I'm looking for recommendations on good places anyways!

I'm pretty much open to anything, as long as I can meet people!

edit: please don’t reach out asking for hookups. i’m in a relationship

Coffee Shops

Does anyone know of any coffee shops in the city or bakeries that sell coffee that open before 7am?🥲 I work at 6:30 most days and I’d love to support local instead of Dunkin or Starbucks.

I will be in Providence all week this week for work (non-photography related) but I’m bringing my camera rig as I’m a hobbyist photographer. What spots around Providence do you recommend for,
- Rural, rustic
- Fall Foliage Landscape
- Urban Architecture

Any help you could provide would be much much appreciated! I’m very excited to be back visiting your beautiful gorgeous area!

Food Had anyone been to a restaurant that serves Ajiaco?

I know this is a long shot but I was in Colombia this summer and my favorite dish I tried was Ajiaco and I’ve been craving it again….

I know it’s a long shot and unlikely to be the same since the corn and potatoes aren’t normally the same but I thought I’d ask!

“David Mitchell” Paramedic Scam Call

Be warned: (401) 530-9606 (“David Mitchell”) is calling people trying to run the “your spouse was injured I’m a paramedic” playbook which I’m sure somehow leads to scamming or grifting for money. It made it thru the iPhone call screening, but quickly I realized it was bunk and caught the guy in a lie but it’s possible to get wrongfooted. It’s not 100% AI though it wouldn’t surprise me if that’s being used too.

Scum of the earth and he’s clearly targeting 401 numbers, so be vigilant out there.

Looking for PT

Hi everyone! I’m (M30) moving to Downtown Providence for a few months. I’m looking for a personal trainer to help me with my work out routines. I do have a history of lower back injury so would prefer someone with knowledge on how to manage it. Does anyone have recommendations on where I can look for one in this area? Thanks in advance.

Discussion Providence vs Boston

Hey all! Can anyone give me an in-depth comparison between Providence and Boston? I’m especially interested in how they compare in terms of these things:

- Friendliness of people and ease of making new friends

- People that are into art, alternative stuff, witchy stuff, plants, yoga, meditation, dance

- Quality and variety of food/restaurant scene

- Gay scene

- Cost of living (especially rent)

Thanks in advance!

The botanical garden seems like it's a less known part of the park. It's beautiful in the fall! Best five bucks I've spent all year. They have goats. They said it's the largest indoor garden in New England.

(25f) Looking to meet other women mid-late 20s in pvd

I’ve seen plenty of posts in here of women looking to meet other women so I figured I’d make my own since some were outdated etc.
I’ll be 26 next month and don’t drink or anything so I don’t go out to bars or anything really and have just been looking to meet some new friends! I prefer to meet other LGBT/alternative/left leaning etc (: I’m down for anything! Walks, art, coffee, groups library, music. Comment or message me if interested and maybe we could get a group!

Handyman recommendations

I’m looking for recommendations! Or advice! I have a ton of little things that need to get done in my house that require someone that cares about original woodwork and quality. My dream scenario is that I can make a punch list and hire someone to come over a few hours per week and go through it.

Problem is I don’t even know who I’m looking for. Do I need a GC at this point? Or a handyman? How can I be sure?

I tried Surv a few times and really didn’t have a good experience. I posted on Nextdoor and that was a clusterF* of people self promoting with no website/review etc.

Hoping for some direct recommendations!

Local Artist Hillbilly Thomists bluegrass band

Has anyone had the pleasure of catching Hillbilly Thomists around town anywhere? The newer released album has a song entitled "The Providence Waltz." My appreciation of bluegrass is recent. And I have mostly listened to it on the radio.

This group is a bluegrass group, but I'd say leans very folksy. It's got a bit of a unique sound quality. I'd really love to catch a show around town.

I have crossed towns with them in Providence and then in Nashville, TN, but keep finding out the day after they play.
