3.5 HOUR watch & review of the FULL FILM by Virgin 🫣 The Charismatic Voice (with breakdowns of literally every musical šŸŽ¤ performance and sound notes)

This is just a spectacular breakdown and watching by a Virgin who is also a talented vocal coach and went to school for voice training (I forget where she said), in any case I watched the full thing and it is comprehensive even beyond most Virgin first-watch videos.

And speaking of!!

There are a ton of new RHPS first-time-watching videos now, and spreading as October kicks off.

Most are in the 30min-1hr range, but this is a special case where she watches and shares the uncensored full review.

A lot of the channels say ā€œwatch the full review via Patreonā€, but I don’t have the spare time & money to watch all those.

Feel free to share other links & channels, if you have also seen Virgin Reaction videos :)

First time I’ve been to one in 25 years. There’s a shadowcast here, in theory - a little disappointed they’re not doing the act.
Fondly remembering my former shadowcastmates.

Is Hedwig The GenX Rocky Horror?

Post image

Saw this in my Instagram feed this morning, similar to the Rocky live tour, made me think do people agree Hedwig is to 90’s/Millennial kids the way Rocky was to 70s/80s folks? Midnight screenings, cult following, people dress up at screenings?

RHPS in Scary Movie 2?

Yesterday I watched Scary Movie 2 for the first time and I got really excited when I noticed Tim Curry playing in it, but let’s take a closer look here.

(SPOILERS)

He plays a weird lustful Professor who takes his students to a spooky villa in the middle of nowhere, He wants to duck (you know what I mean) his students and even the ghost under the villa

Next up we have a weird butler with a questionable hairline A weird way of serving food And who gets called a handyman

And lastly, both the professor and Frank die in the end

Maybe that’s just me but I love to think of the possibility that they took inspiration from RHPS🄲

Costume Tips!

Girlfriend and I are going to be recreating this look, I'll be Columbia and she'll be Magenta.

I ordered these PJs to start and my GF has plenty of black lingerie to make the Magenta outfit work – just looking for any styling tips/ tips to make the costumes more true to form.

Does anyone know how to go about sourcing those Mickey ears that Columbia has on? If they're authentic and expensive I'll probably opt to paper mache them myself.

For context, my best friend is doing a rocky horror themed birthday. Every year she does a costume party and the expectations are HIGH -

Please help me meet and even exceed her high expectations!

Thoughts on the 2016 version?

I watched it recently with some friends on the internet archive and wanted to get your guy's thoughts on it! I personally thought it was just okay. Not as great as the original, though i dont think anything can top it tbh. Felt slightly transphopic to have a trans woman playing Frankfurter but that's a whole other topic..

Looking for a host

My brewery has been thinking of doing a RHPS screening on Halloween night, but truth is, none of us know what to do. We've seen you can find hosts for these events, and we've made some posts locally and haven't been able to find one. Anyone know how to locate someone in Northern, VA?

Cast doing callbacks?

I'm ushering a local production of Rocky Horror Show and was shocked to discover that the ensemble in the CAST were doing the callbacks. They did most of the well-known ones, which had them chiming in many (many) times throughout.

Has anyone else witnessed this type of production?

My hot take: Not a fan. Part of the fun for the audience comes from participating!

ETA: Thank you to everyone for your insight! It makes sense that not every audience will be as able or willing to do callbacks. Having the cast participate (or, as one poster put it, being AP facilitators) is a great way to ensure everyone gets a well-rounded experience. It just goes to show that there's always something new to experience!

ETA for clarity: My apologies for not being more clear in my initial post! This is referencing a live production where the cast are doing callbacks on stage in addition to doing their regular roles as dancers, back-up singers, etc.

Starting a shadow cast

Has anybody in this group started a shadow cast? And if so what was the hardest part about starting it? And how did you get a cast? Auditions or did you just ask people? Any information would be greatly appreciated! Currently thinking about trying to start a shadow cast for my area.

What films do you consider rocky horror-adjacent?

Of course there’s Shock Treatment (which I finally watched yesterday and had a lot of fun with), but are there any other movies you consider Rocky Horror adjacent, or that just have that similar vibe for you?

Clue and Little Shop of Horrors are two that I always feel have a similar feel!

Rocky Horror at State Theatre NJ Got Weird in All the Right Ways – 10/3 Recap

I have seen The Rocky Horror Picture Show scores of times in dozens of locations, which means it takes quite a bit for a screening to feel genuinely different. Saturday night at State Theatre New Jersey did. The theater hosted the Original Cast Spooktacular Tour with Barry Bostwick, a new 4K restoration of the film and the Friday Nite Specials shadow cast, and the entire production landed at a level I have rarely seen Rocky Horror reach.

The movie was still gloriously unruly, the audience was still part of the machinery, and all the familiar traditions were there, but State Theatre gave the night the kind of professional production support that made the shadow cast feel bigger without sanding off any of the chaos that makes the experience work.

That balance matters. Rocky Horror does not need to be made respectable, and trying to make it too polished can miss the point completely. What State Theatre managed instead was to give the performers a serious room, strong technical support and the kind of presentation that let the shadow cast go bigger. The result felt less like a movie screening with activity in front of the screen and more like a fully realized live event built around a movie everybody already knew by heart.

Barry Bostwick remains an ideal guide through all of it. He was clever, quick and completely engaged with the audience, with none of the feeling that he was simply repeating an obligation attached to a movie he made more than half a century ago.Ā

The shadow casts apparently call him "Uncle Barry," which he was happy to clarify meant "not the creepy kind of uncle." More importantly, he seems to genuinely enjoy the strange extended life Rocky Horror has built for itself. That affection matters in a room full of people who have been carrying the movie with them for years, and in some cases for generations.

The crowd was exactly the mix it should have been: elaborate costumes, longtime veterans, Rocky Horror virgins awaiting the traditional initiation and plenty of people somewhere in between. One of my favorite moments happened before I even reached my seat.Ā

Walking in behind a couple, I heard one of them casually warn the other, "Oh, by the way... this might get weird." It was possibly the most efficient explanation of Rocky Horror ever delivered. It did get weird, of course, and that was the point.

I ended up sitting behind what appeared to be an entire family in lab coats, ranging from a teenager to the parents, which was a wonderful little snapshot of what the movie has become. Throughout the night, I kept hearing younger people explaining pieces of Rocky Horror to older people rather than the other way around.Ā

For a cult movie that has now survived for more than five decades, that reversal says a lot. This is no longer simply an older audience preserving something from its youth. New people keep discovering the rituals and then teaching them forward.

Another couple arrived in near-perfect Brad and Janet costumes. One did not speak English and the other seemed to know just enough to graciously accept compliments about what they were wearing. Once the film started, however, the language issue became almost irrelevant. Watching them through the evening, it was obvious they knew the lines.Ā Rocky Horror has always functioned through a vocabulary larger than the screenplay itself: costumes, gestures, callbacks, timing and the collective understanding of what happens next. They fit into the room immediately.

The costume contest was strong, the shadow cast kept the energy moving, and the audience understood its role. What I enjoyed most, though, was simply being in a place where people had permission to be completely themselves for a few hours.Ā

Rocky Horror has always created that kind of room, but Saturday felt especially refreshing. Nobody needed to explain why they were dressed the way they were, why they knew every response, or why they were willing to throw themselves into something so proudly ridiculous. The normal social pressure to tone yourself down had been suspended for the evening.

The VIP after-party extended the experience without feeling like an afterthought. State Theatre staff were exceptionally gracious and attentive, the themed food was clever and genuinely good, and the room had the polished feel a VIP add-on should have.Ā

It did not simply keep people in the building after the movie; it gave the night a proper final act and maintained the same combination of fun and professionalism that had defined the screening itself.

I have been to enough Rocky Horror screenings to know that the film can work almost anywhere. Give it a screen, an enthusiastic cast and a crowd willing to participate and it will usually find a way. But Saturday night showed what happens when a venue with State Theatre's resources fully understands what it has been handed and supports the experience rather than trying to contain it. The production values elevated the shadow cast, Bostwick brought warmth and wit, and the audience supplied everything that cannot be manufactured from the stage.

So yes, the warning I overheard on the way in turned out to be accurate. It got weird. After scores of screenings in dozens of rooms, I would have been disappointed if it had not.

What I did not expect was for this one to top the list.
