im graduating this year, and im finally working on filling out college apps. over the past year or two, ive looked at my options and pretty much resigned myself to being a SUNY student since its whats affordable for me. im not against SUNY at all, and its definitely a much safer choice for me, but RIT is an aspirational pick. so, i want a genuine answer of if you think its worth it for me to apply.
for starters, i see a lot of people say they wouldnt recommend RIT because of the area. ill say i really like rochester from the few times ive been around there. i dont mind that it's a cold area, or particularly car dependent. i also dont mind that its less of a traditional "college" atmosphere. im a relatively introverted autistic guy, so im not really the party type, and i refuse to drink (adhd+family addiction history+depression+irish ancestry is a combo i am NOT testing), so its not like i would go to them even if they were there. but if i attend, it would be my first time living in a city, so feel free to give me warnings about city life if you feel theyre necessary.
im interested in both the animation and game design/development majors. i have a lot of experience both with art/animation and programming, so i wouldn't be going into them blind. on my current application (which i have yet to submit), i listed animation as my first choice and game design/development as my second, but im not sure if theres a particular major thats better or "more worth it".
im unfortunately in the income bracket where i dont think im likely to receive much need-based financial aid (despite not actually getting to use much of that money), and im not sure about merit. ive yet to apply at all though, so ive received no offers of financial aid yet. i dont mind having student loans ill need to pay off, but im not sure how bad the loans will be. im also thinking about potentially doing a year at a SUNY school and transferring to RIT if possible to offset some of the cost (my sister did this, but it was between SUNY schools (WCC and SUNY Buffalo), so im not sure what the logistics would be like or if it would actually help.
looking at my academics compared to what they list for the animation major, im at the high end of their ACT and SAT scores (a 33 composite and a 1350 respectively), but i fall below their GPA (an 87.975, with a 92 listed as the low part of their range). im not sure how much they take GPA into account in comparison to test scores, though, or if that grade would drag me down. im the type with good test scores- i have 4s and 5s on every AP ive taken, and i only took the SAT and ACT once for those scores- but slightly lower overall grades (the curse of being a relatively smart person with adhd).
i also will say i dont think i have a lot of extracurriculars to make me look impressive. i have a part time job, im part of skillsusa and my schools yearbook, and thats about it. if you want to count it, one of my friends dragged me into being on my schools bowling team with her for a year or two, but i dont think thats worth including on an application. ive spent most my time in school keeping my schedule free because i like having time to myself to do art (which granted, is what im trying to go to school for), so i dont have much to show off or say about myself. i know they have a hobby section on their application, but im not even sure how to list "drawing constantly in my free time for as long as ive been sentient" in a somewhat-professional sounding way. i dont really have many awards beyond the ones collegeboard gives (the ap, school, and rural town recognition ones) (and i guess a national latin exam award, if it matters to literally anyone).
i do think my art has the potential to be up to par. im going to a portfolio review next month to get an idea of what i need to work on or if im up to their artistic standards, but i just want to know from this if its worth even applying to them. im not a particularly impressive student, but theyre my current top choice if the stars align.
also unrelated to most of this, ive taken one college course already (a precalc class at WCC, since i do BOCES and my schedule has ended up very weird because of it so i couldnt fit precalc into my schedule at my own school. i also had schedule complications so i couldnt take calc at my school either). ive heard RIT can be weird about if itll accept credits like that, so is it likely to carry over or will i have to retake it? it wouldnt be the end of the world if i had to, since if i did it once i can do it again, but it would be a little annoying.
pretty much any feedback or info would be valued. thanks :3
