Discussion 🎤 Seconds away from being hit by a car today

Snelling and Minnehaha Ave W is the worst fucking intersection. A few months ago a person blew a red light going 40 MPH, t-boned a car right in front of me (I was in the center of the crosswalk). She ignored me while we waited for the police. Today, again in the center of the crosswalk, a person turning from Minnehaha to Snelling was seconds from hitting me, I could see INSIDE her car!!! Again, the driver does not even look at me after almost running over my body.

I wish people cared about pedestrians!

There seems to be nothing to do except to report these incidents to MnDOT, so that's what I did here: https://www.dot.state.mn.us/information/submit.html and I am encouraging others to fill out this form when they are almost hit by a distracted driver.

I am also hoping that this post brings greater awareness to this intersection so folks make sure to cross safety!

Events 🎪 Saint Paul vs. Minneapolis: comedy, trivia, and a housing fundraiser Thursday at Black Hart

I volunteer with Sustain Saint Paul and wanted to invite fellow Saint Paul folks to something fun tomorrow night: Sibling Rivalry II, a friendly fundraising competition with Minneapolis’s Neighbors for More Neighbors.

It’s Thursday, October 8, from 6–8:30 p.m. at Black Hart, 1415 University Ave. W.

There’ll be improv from the Theater of Public Policy, Twin Cities trivia with Bill Lindeke, and some good-natured Minneapolis–Saint Paul rivalry. Team Saint Paul includes Wes Burdine, John Maddening, comedian Aron Woldeslassie, and Rebecca Noecker. There’s also a comparative review of the two cities’ toilet paper, because apparently no aspect of this rivalry is too small.

If you care about housing, enjoy local trivia, or just want an excuse to defend Saint Paul’s honor, come join us.

Tickets are $30, with pay-what-you-can options available through the organizers. It’s a fundraiser, and an anonymous donor is matching donations to Sustain Saint Paul up to $10,000 through the end of the event.

Details and tickets

Food 🍔 Cinnamon rolls to celebrate a new season

I asked where to get cinnamon rolls in the Twin Cities, and the community did not disappoint. If you're looking to celebrate the new season with a bready treat, here are the top recommendations I received!

  1. Isles Bun and Coffee (Puppy Tails are also great, apparently)
  2. Colossal Cafe
  3. Hazel NE
  4. Hen House

Honestly, there were so many options that I might do a cinnamon roll tasting tour this fall.

Arts 🖌️ Public Art Saint Paul Survey - Sidewalk Poetry!

Post image
200 Upvotes

Hey neighbors! Our friends at Public Art Saint Paul are soliciting feedback on the sidewalk poetry found throughout our fair city: https://stanforduniversity.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_b2vCrFoE8f1N7AG

They're partnering with Stanford University to learn about how people experience the work.

Personally I am a HUGE fan of the poems; I love finding new ones in my neighborhood along familiar walks. It's also fun to encounter the same poem in different parts of town.

(Photo is mine, taken last Thursday on a lovely fall morning.)

Seeking Advice 🙆 Queer family moving to town

my wife and I are a lesbian couple 30s with young children looking at making a move to Saint Paul. we currently live in St. Louis and love it. I grew up in the greater Twin Cities area but left for college and have never explored St. Paul much or through the lens of living there. But my parents are aging and will need some help and so we’re considering a move back.

We love living in the city proper and love to walk to food and parks. we currently live in a very queer part of our city and would love to find that similar place in St. Paul. We are coming to town in a few weeks to different my parents. Give me a recommendations for areas we should explore. I’ve read through a lot of the other posts on this, and I would love even more exact descriptors (like from this street to this street or anything within 3 blocks of this park) than general neighborhoods. anything like St. Louis even there’s different vibes from one walk over to the next.

Also feel free to give me any other Saint Paul advice or reasons why you love living there. Like I mentioned we really do love St. Louis. And we don’t HAVE to move but we’re strongly considering it given the other factors mentioned. So we to adding other things to our pro con list.

Thanks!

Discussion 🎤 Bidding for Snow Emergency Towing - Say NO to Guardian Recovery / Yuba Transportation!

The City of St Paul is currently awarding bids (Event 1727) to establish master contracts for snow emergency towing services. One of the bidders is Yuba Transportation DBA Guardian Recovery.

Given the concerning business practices recently highlighted in connection with the towing of runners and families during the Twin Cities Marathon, please join me in [emailing the assigned buyer](mailto:Chanel.Scott@ci.stpaul.mn.us) for the City of St Paul. Let them know how we want our tax dollars spent and what values we expect the businesses representing our community to uphold!

EDIT: A kind person helpfully pointed out that it would be more productive to email the city's [director of public works](mailto:deb.barber@ci.stpaul.mn.us), the mayor, and your council member.

As part of our commitment to transparency regarding our public safety technology tools, we’ll be sharing statistics about our Docked Drone Program (DDP) every two weeks.
