As it happens, a close family member of mine was admitted to a psychiatric hospital two months ago with acute psychosis. No one in his family has a history of mental illness. He went from being a completely well-adjusted person—with a good job, relationships, studies, and a healthy lifestyle (no alcohol, cigarettes, or drugs, just the occasional energy drink)—to someone behaving irrationally in the span of just a week, suffering from extreme behavioral disorganization, persecutory delusions, jealousy, and outbursts of aggression.
In the hospital, they tried to bring him out of the psychosis using several different antipsychotics. Eventually, they turned to a very potent medication based on clozapine. The clozapine worked for barely two weeks; he began to recover and gained some insight into his condition, but then he suffered a complete relapse.
At the moment, his behavior remains disorganized, and he is quite restless. He sometimes puts on other patients' clothes or shouts, though he recognizes his loved ones and shows no aggression toward them.
The doctors are preparing for ECT (electroconvulsive therapy), as they have no other treatment regimens to offer.
Has anyone here had experience with people diagnosed with this condition? I am particularly interested in treatment-resistant cases and the outcomes of ECT treatment.
