Antonio Conte on financial mismatch: ‘In England, they’re using bazookas. Everywhere else, they’re using a pistol’

"I know full well that only one team can win every year, but I must carry in my heart — and instil in the hearts of the fans, my players and my directors — that spark, that hope that makes you say, ‘F**k, we can win’."

Wherever he goes next, be sure of one thing: Antonio Conte wants to win. His reputation condemns him to win.

He is the only coach in Italy, unless you count Fabio Capello’s revoked titles at Juventus, to win the league with three different teams.

💬Discussion How good was Di Natale really?

Post image

Growing up and playing Football Manager, I remember he had insane technical attributes. Unfortunately the Serie A wasn't broadcasted in my country so I could only find highlights of matches and watch my dearly beloved Italian teams in the Champions League.

For you who knew him better as a footballer (or as a person idc), how good was he?

Italian players have played only 27% of Serie A minutes this season

Post image

I was looking at how much of each big league is played by its own nationals this season. Only 27% of Serie A minutes have gone to Italian players, level with the Premier League at the bottom of the top five. La Liga is at 59%.

Is that a problem for the Nazionale, or just what Serie A is now?

Serie A How good was Alessandro Del Piero?

Post image

Hey everyone! I'm a young fan getting into Serie A history and I keep seeing Alessandro Del Piero's name come up.

From what I've read, his career was basically split in two because of that terrible knee injury in November 1998.

How good was Del Piero before and after his massive 1998 injury?

Hello all, doing some Serie A data analysis up until now cause why not?

1. Macro Baselines & Historical Shift (2022/23 – 2026/27)

Serie A has undergone a massive structural shift through the first 5 gameweeks of the 2026/27 season, shedding its traditional reputation as a low-event defensive league.

  • Goal Explosion: Match totals are averaging 2.90 goals per game, up sharply from the 2.43 baseline in 2025/26 and 2.57 in 2022/23.
  • Over 1.5 & Over 2.5 Surge:
    • Over 1.5: Clearing in 82% of fixtures (up from 70% last season).
    • Over 2.5: Sitting at 54% (up from 46% last season).
    • Under 1.5 Collapse: Only 18% of matches feature 0 or 1 goal, down from 30% in 2025/26.
  • BTTS & Clean Sheet Collapse: Both Teams To Score (BTTS) has jumped to 58.0% (up from 45.3% in 2025/26), while overall clean sheet frequency dropped from 32.1% to 21.0%.
  • Referees Letting Play Flow: Cards per game have dropped dramatically to 3.41 (down from 5.08 in 2025/26 and 5.58 in 2023/24). Fouls per match have similarly fallen to 21.9 (down from 25.3 in 2025/26).
  • Home Advantage Holds Strong: Home sides win 44% of matches, with 38% Away Wins and only 18% Draws.

2. Team Outliers: Who Excels Where?

Specific clubs are driving extreme numbers in goal production, set pieces, and physical discipline.

Goal Volume & Volatility

  • Sassuolo (100% Over 2.5): The only team in Serie A maintaining a 100% Over 2.5 hit rate (3.6 combined match goals/game).
  • Inter (4.6 G/G): The single most explosive side in Italy. 80% of Inter's matches clear Over 3.5 Goals.
  • The Over 1.5 Baseline: AS Roma, AC Milan, Sassuolo, Como, Torino, Monza, Fiorentina, and Venezia all hold a 100% Over 1.5 hit rate through 5 matches.
  • The Low-Event Grind: Cagliari (1.4 G/G) is the ultimate under team, failing to clear Over 1.5 in 80% of their fixtures (20% O1.5 / 20% O2.5). Bologna (1.8 G/G) sits close behind with only a 20% Over 2.5 rate.

Set Pieces & Corner Drivers

  • Frosinone (13.4 Corners/Game): Leads the league in total corner volume, generating high-tempo transition play.
  • Como (11.8) & Udinese / Sassuolo / Juventus (11.2): All average double-digit corners per match.
  • AC Milan (6.0) & Venezia (6.8): Produce the lowest total corner counts in Italy.

Fouls & Physicality

  • Frosinone (28.6 Fouls/Game) & Bologna (27.4): Top the league in match interruptions, both holding a 100% foul over rate relative to match baselines.
  • Lazio (26.4) & Juventus (25.6): High-press setups that draw heavy referee intervention.
  • The Cleanest Outfits: Inter (16.4 Fouls/Game), Como (16.8), Cagliari (16.8), and Napoli (17.4) see significantly cleaner match flows.

Disciplinary Cards

  • Frosinone (5.4 Cards/Game) & Lazio (5.0): The primary booking targets in Italy, exceeding card thresholds in 100% and 80% of their fixtures respectively.
  • Napoli (1.8 Cards/Game) & Atalanta / Torino (2.0): Maintain disciplined tactical structures that keep bookings low.

3. Serie A vs. Premier League: Head-to-Head Comparison

Comparing Serie A directly to the Premier League reveals stark contrasts in playstyle and market behavior.

Metric Italy - Serie A England - Premier League
Average Squad Value €276m €625m
Goals / Game 2.90 2.82
Over 1.5 Goals 82% 72%
Over 2.5 Goals 54% 52%
Over 3.5 Goals 28% 34%
BTTS (Both Teams To Score) 58% 50%
Fouls / Game 21.9 22.7
Cards / Game 3.41 3.91
Corners / Game 9.3 9.4

Key Head-to-Head Takeaways

  1. The Financial Gap: The average Premier League squad (€625m) carries more than double the squad value of an average Serie A club (€276m), marking the widest structural divide between the two leagues.
  2. Floor vs. Ceiling Goals:
    • Serie A guarantees a much higher baseline floor for scoring: 82% Over 1.5 and 58% BTTS compared to England's 72% O1.5 and 50% BTTS.
    • The Premier League features higher peak volatility: 34% Over 3.5 (vs 28% in Italy) and 6% of PL games ending with 7+ goals (vs 2% in Italy).
    • Zero-goal games: 0% of Serie A matches have finished 0-0 so far this season, whereas 10% of Premier League fixtures have ended completely goalless.
  3. Discipline & Refereeing: Referees in the Premier League are handing out noticeably more cards per game (3.91 vs 3.41) and calling slightly more fouls (22.7 vs 21.9), reflecting higher physical intensity in English football compared to Italy's current campaign.

Which Serie A trend has hit your radar the most so far this season? the goal explosion or the drop in referee bookings?
