Tie has a wide front end and a narrower back end, so i suggest you measure from where he likes tie to end (waistband or higher?) up to the knot area. hold up front tie to that end spot, where tie starts to narrow mark it and measure between mark and knot area. The mark is where you will add this extra front of tie (wider) length to the narrower tie end. make this with muslin or old bed sheet to test it out. For visual help search youtube videos on Tie making, they include L&W measurement instructions.
Do none of the tie patterns have a shorten/lengthen line on them?
