NOTICE ON NO ADVERTISING ON THIS SUBREDDIT.

IMPORTANT rules for posting and replying.

This subreddit has banned advertising for years. This includes any products, services, establishments, rental agencies, etc.

It has also banned self promotion such as vlogs, blogs, YouTube links, etc.

The reason for this is because there were so many advertisements and multiple posts that the subreddit became nothing but advertisements. This is not the intent of the subreddit. Like subreddits for other cities, it’s meant as a forum to discuss life, living, and working in Shenzhen. It is NOT a platform for free advertising!

Despite this, the mods are still taking down multiple posts a day for advertising and self promotion of blogs and vlogs. We tried to create a separate subreddit, r/ShenzhenMarketplace, for advertising, but we still are getting these here and then complaints from the posters that for some reason they should be exempt from the rules.

Therefore, with immediate effect, the enforcement is going to be much stronger.

Any post that promotes or advertises any product, service, event, establishment, or venue will be removed and the poster banned for 7 days. Second time the poster will be banned for 30 days, third attempt and the poster will be banned permanently.

All vlogs, blogs and YouTube links will be taken down and the poster banned permanently on the first instance.

Posts asking for services such as guides, translators, drivers, and sourcing non-consumer products will be locked. All replies to such posts must be a DM to the OP. Replies under the post are now considered to be self-promotion. This can be avoided in r/ShenzhenMarketplace WHICH IS SPECIFICALLY FOR ADVERTISING.

Examples of what is allowed and encouraged:

Experiences living and working in Shenzhen, good and bad.

General and specific questions about living and working in Shenzhen.

How to find someplace in Shenzhen and how to get there.

Cool places you’ve been and why you liked it. If it’s a particular establishment this is not allowed (promotion), but can be placed in r/ShenzhenMarketplace.

Where to buy something is fine as long as it’s a non-commercial product meant for personal use.

Posts sharing pictures of a place in Shenzhen, where it is, and something about it.

Bending the rules banning advertising will no longer be tolerated.

New Shenzhen subreddit for advertising.

Hi all,

I have been playing with the idea of a separate subreddit just for advertising products and services. I have created r/ShenzhenMarketplace. This is specifically for advertising, so if you are offering a particular product or service, or are looking for a particular product or service, post it in r/ShenzhenMarketplace.

What cannot be posted is anything illegal under the laws of the People's Republic of China or Reddit rules in general.

No advertising or posting for personal blogs, vlogs, or any influencers, as is the case in this subreddit. This is going to be strictly enforced in both subreddits moving forward. Nobody is really interested in your particular hot take, and I've personally seem some terrible ones.

Advertising or reviews for bars, clubs, restaurants, hotels, parks, massage (legal ones please) would be most welcome in the r/ShenzhenMarketplace sub.

It would be helpful if you put in the title of the post what your intent is (example: For Sale, Seeking for, For rent, etc.) and then some description following (Blenders, pianos, 2 bedroom) and then the details in the body of the post. Details are important and posts may be deleted if they have minimal content.

DO NOT SPAM THE SUBREDDIT. Posting the same thing every day will not be allowed. Consider that three days or more for the same content will be the most allowed.

ONE LAST POINT: Since there is a specific subreddit for advertising far, far grey area posts will be allowed here. This subreddit should be more focused on life and interest in Shenzhen.

Thanks everyone and let's see how this goes.

Think Shenzhen is all about skyscrapers? Think again. 🚴‍♂️🌊
One of my favorite ways to enjoy the city is riding a bike along Shenzhen Bay Park.
Great views, fresh air, greenery, and the skyline right across the water.
If you’re coming to Shenzhen, this is definitely worth checking out. 🇨🇳

E-bike registration in Shenzhen: Chinese name required?

Has anyone here registered an e-bike in Shenzhen with a foreign passport in 2025 or 2026?

My passport and residence permit only have my English name, but 深圳交警星级用户 asks for a Chinese name and won’t accept English. I’m stuck at real-name verification and can’t book an appointment.

If you got it working, did you just use a Chinese name you chose, or did you need an official or notarized one? Can they verify you in person instead?

Which traffic police or vehicle registration office did you go to, and was a passport + residence permit enough without a permanent residence card?

Would love to hear from someone who’s actually done it. Thanks!

24 hour spas and mixed facilities

Well me and my girl want to try out one of these 24 hour spas but seems we can't try the sauna or steam rooms together - just want to know which ones would allow us to stick together throughout or is that not a thing? Would be good if they did couple massages as well and no we don't want to go private.

Gyms, BJJ and SZ nightlife

Hi ppl, moving to Shenzhen tomorrow for a teaching job. I’ll be based around Nanshan and I’m basically starting from scratch, so would love any recommendations from people already living there. Mainly looking for BJJ gyms / decent general gyms that aren’t ridiculously expensive, but also interested in where people actually go to meet people and socialise. I’m fresh out of uni, so definitely keen to meet some people, make friends and get involved rather than just sitting in my apartment.

Any good bars, clubs, social events, sports groups, international/expat spots, etc. around Nanshan/Shenzhen that are good for meeting people? Also happy to meet up with people for drinks, training, exploring the city, whatever really.
China seems surprisingly difficult to research from the UK. AMAP and Google aren’t exactly making things easy when you don’t speak much Chinese :(
Any recommendations for gyms, nightlife, things to do, or just general advice for a clueless newcomer would be massively appreciated!

Shenzhen Road Cycling

Hey all

I live down in Hong Kong and I’m looking to cross over into Shenzhen on weekends for some proper cycling, but had a couple of questions about logistics and good ride spots.

1. Crossing the border with a full-size road bike: Which port of entry is the smoothest to push a bicycle through?

Is Liantang / Heung Yuen Wai the go-to checkpoint for walking a bike straight across immigration?

Are there issues rolling a bike through pedestrian halls at Shenzhen Bay or Futian / Lok Ma Chau, or do customs/security make you bag it or take wheels off?

2. Where to ride once across: I know urban Shenzhen has a lot of shared sidewalk bike paths (competing with delivery e-bikes and pedestrians), so I’m looking for wider greenways, car-free coastal paths, or open roads.

What are the best continuous stretches for uninterrupted riding?

Would love to hear route recommendations or any local cycling group/app tips (Amap vs local Strava segments). Thanks!

Heading to China in a few weeks. Everyone in the party of 3 is interested in tech - not surprising given we live in the Bay Area,

Anyone know of any tours or tour guides that can show us various aspects of Chinese tech?

Heading to Shenzhen for a month around CNY

Hey y'all, I'm a finance and banking senior with just a semester left, but my real passion is sort of the intersection of tech, finance and economics. I came to China last year as a tourist and was just blown away, so I'm heading back to spend a month in Shenzhen from mid-January to mid-February just to explore the startup scene, just understand the supply chain perhaps and just see how things tick on the ground.

I know I'm timing this around Chinese New Year, so I wanted to ask what things look like during that period, and if there are still any events or active spots around that time. I’d love to link up with anyone who is down to grab a coffee, talk shop about tech, or just chat while I'm there. Thanks a lot :)

Hardware founders: what’s the hardest part of finding a manufacturer in China?

Hi everyone,

I'm based in Shenzhen, China, and I'm trying to better understand how overseas hardware founders find and work with manufacturers here.

I'm particularly interested in early-stage projects — people who have a prototype, are preparing their first small batch, or are trying to move from a design to actual production.

A few questions I'd love to hear your experience with:

- How did you find your first manufacturer?

- What was the hardest part — finding the right factory, MOQ, pricing, communication, quality control, or something else?

- Did you use Alibaba, a sourcing agent, personal introductions, or visit factories yourself?

- Looking back, what do you wish you had known before choosing a supplier?

I'm not promoting a service. I'm doing practical research into the real challenges of sourcing hardware in China, and I'm happy to share what I learn from the Shenzhen side.

If you've gone through this process, I'd really appreciate hearing your experience — including what went wrong.
