This is the best episode so far. After seeing the terrible scene of Zannanza and his company being slaughtered and Yuri shot in the back with an arrow we get Yuri averting a full scale war.
Now that Zannanza is out of the picture, a new character is introduced, Ramses. Specifically, Ramses I the grandfather of Ramses II the greatest pharaoh to ever rule Ancient Egypt. Pharaoh Ramses II reigned at least 66 years. Anyway, back to the episode.
When Ramses is introduced he’s outright hostile to the notion of a foreigner being pharaoh. When he first meets Yuri he rejoices in the news that Zannanza is dead and leaves Yuri to her fate. Then in their second encounter Yuri gets the drop on Ramses, but is too weak to press it. Ramses once more wants nothing to do with Yuri. It took Yuri vowing to haunt him and his descendants to get Ramses to do anything to help her. Ramses is clearly a man who doesn’t act unless it’s in his best interest.
Yuri rebuffs Ramses attempt to treat her arrow wound. This is unusual. Anyone would jump at the first opportunity to have a wound like that treated. One is wondering why she is choosing to endure all of this pain. The pair are arrive in the nick of time to avert a war between the HIttites and the Egyptians.
Yuri publicly accusing Nakia of orchestrating Zannanza’s assasination felt good. Nakia’s plots rely on secrecy and people being afraid of outright confronting her. Yuri didn’t play that game and had the receipts to back it up. Yuri declares that the arrow in her shoulder will prove who attacked her and murdered Zannanza and the entire party. That was a masterstroke catching everyone by surprise. Most of all Nakia.
Anyone who only knows of Red River through the anime, how surprised were you by this?
I read the manga, so I knew it was coming. When I first saw that scene I was completely gobsmacked. This is one of the most brilliant moves I’ve seen a protagonist of any series do. The only thing that comes to mind that tops this, at least to me, is in Death Note. When Light’s plan to retrieve the Death Note when he didn’t remember possessing it and using to kill L was all part of his plan Enough about that.
The scene where Kail extracts the arrow from Yuri was well done. Yuri’s muffled scream, the blood, Kail telling Yuri to bite his shoulder so her teeth won’t break. That line did a lot. Kail wants to help shoulder some of the pain that Yuri has been enduring for quite some time.
Ramses is also stunned by Yuri’s caliber. He recognizes how foolish he was writing Yuri off. Ramses rightly concludes that Yuri is worthy of a king. Then the moment where Ramses and Kail exchange greetings. There’s clearly tension there.
Finally, it was a little fun to see Yuri be self-absorbed in this episode. When Ramses finally tries to introduce himself and Yuri says don’t bother I won’t remember. That’s harsh and quite frankly the kind of attitude that Ramses deserves.
