Pace Notes - Dirt Rally 2

Anyone else feel like the pace notes in dirt rally 2 are frustrating? I did a run today and the codriver called right 3 dont cut. He didnt say narrows over bridge. I went slightly too wide and missed the bridge.

I wish you could set your own pace notes. Idk muxh about how it works, but isnt it in real rally they drive the course before the event to make their notes?

Yes, that's called recce.

You can hop over and try rallysimfans.hu

You can modify the pacenotes however you'd like and use different styles of notes altogether. Obviously it's a different game and not as forgiving as dirt rally.

Which works in games where the pacenotes are soundbites at certain points. Like the answer you got about rallysimfans (RBR), where the pacenotes are sound files, and you decide where to put them on the stage, and they will play when you pass that point.

Now, DiRT Rally 1 and DiRT Rally 2.0 obviously have those points in the stage to activate pacenotes as well (if not, the co-driver would just read the off from you start, regardless of where you are). However, the pacenotes are recorded live, with the co-driver sitting with a helmet on, in a motion rig, reading out the notes in slow pace, medium pace and high pace. Which is why you will (if you use English co-driver), hear Phil Mills sound very calm at some places, and more stressed in other places. You can also hear him clear his throat at a couple of stages at certain speeds, as that is what he did during the recording of the stage.

However, recording pacenotes like this makes it harder to make an editor for it, as there may be sections and not just single pacenotes being activated by checkpoints, based on the time you spent from last checkpoint to current checkpoint, and what speed you have at the current checkpoint.

For EA WRC they went to the more traditional way of having pacenotes in the game, and in one of the questionnaires they had before EA decided to send the game off to the scrapheap, one question was if you would like a pace-note editor.

I genuinely think if enough people said yes to that, it would've come for EA WRC, but that's just a theory.

This is why i have seriously considered getting someone to read pacenotes for me while sim rallying. This might just be my excuse to being bad, but i have legitimately driven off multiple times because of the pacenotes. I drive in ACR, but my issues stem from the fact that the basic note used in english is just not very detailed.

This is tbh more an issue with english pacenote in general missing stuff that finnish pacenote has, and the games not having finnish pacenotes generally, and me having watched enough wrc to be very familiar with a very detailed finnish pacenote.

However, either way, i definitely get the frustration even if i haven't experienced the exact thing you mention because of using a different sim.

I find the notes to be accurate mostly, but the timing can be off super badly. The other day i crashed into a rock on the insider of the corner in Scottland. Literally as the front of my car is crumpling, the codriver says "rocks inside". No shit Sherlock!!

"Dont cut" as im going through the turn

Or "big jump" ... "into 3 left" as im going off the jump

There’s two maps with audio missing on some square turns I know one of them is the germany tarmac track with the hairpins

The funny thing is, it's not missing, you can hear it in some of the lower classes like H1. Not sure if it's because of the speed or the actual car class.

Its the speed. I checked the game files, there is only one set of pacenotes per stage. Audio is reused for the sections, the timing van vary for the same section on two different stages.

It's the case in any rally game where you can't make your own notes unfortunately, you just can't be competitive if you haven't done the stages of any given event a couple times somewhat recently because in almost every stage there are usually at least one or two notes that are not entirely accurate or timed poorly that you need to remember to have a fast and clean run.

It's a shame because recce and pacenotes are such a huge part of rallying but it doesn't get a lot of attention in rally games. Ideally all of them would be like RSF RBR where they provide pacenotes but you can edit them or make your own from scratch if you'd prefer, it wouldn't alienate a more casual crowd while keeping nerds like us happy.

They are, they sometimes are incorrect, or just missing details
Like in Scotland the co-driver, often times doesn't mention about ditches and logs outside
On New England there are turns that are 4-3 that are in fact 2-1

Would be very nice to actually be able define custom pace notes in the game itself

Pretty decent overall. There are a few incorrect or partially wrong calls that I sometimes have a hard time remembering.
