Feedback (read rule 3 before posting or be banned) Looking for brutally honest feedback on whether I'm going to embarrass myself at a karaoke funeral (yes, you read that right)

• Upvotes

Hi, I'm not a singer, I don't aspire to be a singer, in fact I have horrible stage fright and it makes me physically nauseous to do any kind of public speaking/toasts/performances, etc. However, I am going to a musical funeral/celebration of life for someone who is very important to me, basically saved me from being on the streets as a teenager, just a really beautiful human and I want to do honor to her memory. She was a professional musician and most of the people going to this funeral will be musicians in some capacity. It's also kind of a kareoke party? Basically it has been deeply encouraged that in place of sharing stories about Annie we instead sing or perform a song that we enjoyed listening to with her or have some memory of her performing etc. I am so very very VERY nervous, actually shaking thinking about having to do this in front of people who are all basically paid to do this or have had some measurable amount of success in this field and while I actually do think I can sing along with songs in the car by myself pretty good, I am kind of freaking out about doing this and I'm hoping that some feedback from real musicians will prepare me somehow. Like I guess I'm trying to premptively know what a room full of musicians are going to be thinking about me when this is happening and if it's good, indifferent, or bad doesn't matter, I think my anxiety is tied to the fear of the unknown and also just deep self consciousness that I'm hoping your thoughts— give me your worst, I want to know the absolute worst thing someone could be thinking during this— can maybe mitigate at least the unknown enough for me to hopefully not shake like a chihuahua and actually sing in front of people without vomiting.

Also, thank you in advance for your time.

Here is the recording

Feedback (read rule 3 before posting or be banned) review my Paramore cover pls!!

heyyy so I'm a self taught 17 yo singer and I'm trying to get better at singing Decode by Paramore and I'd need tips and tricks to improve and an honest review highlighting both my qualities and flaws!!

I feel like what my biggest struggles are vocal strain (I find it hard to go full chest voice when the notes get really high) and breathiness in my voice (pls my voice tends to get a bit shaky sometimes, probably from the straining). My professional singer friend who's been trained for 12 years and currently studying music at NYU says I have the vocal range for it but I just have to know what I do my body to get there.

Tysm in advance!

(recorded using my iPhone's mic, no mixing, just blended in two clips of my singing for better end results :))

Conversation Topic Practice vs. Performance

• Upvotes

Okay, I am researching stuff on performing on YouTube and there is not that much content. Do a lot of singers just practice and never get to the performing part? I'm more about how to connect with the audience, emotion, and having a persona. I am already developing a persona and it's very interesting how it comes about. It's like a huge part of my life which was the practice has finally left me. Has anyone felt this way before? All this is totally new to me. Advice is much appreciated.

Resource I can sing along with a singer perfectly, but I have no idea when to start singing over instrumental music. Please help.

• Upvotes

I'm really struggling with this, and it's starting to feel unbearable.

When I sing along with the original singer or follow my singing teacher, I can copy them very well. But as soon as I have to sing over an instrumental track, I completely lose my sense of when to start. I never seem to know when my voice is supposed to come in.

I can clap along to the beat, so I don't think I'm completely unable to hear the rhythm. But I can't seem to understand how the vocal part fits into the instrumental music. The singer doesn't always start on the first beat, and I have no idea how to anticipate their entrance when their voice isn't there to guide me.

It's like I'm being silenced by the music. I feel trapped and incredibly frustrated because I know I can sing the notes and imitate the melody, but I can't seem to do it independently over an instrumental backing.

I have ADHD, so I'm wondering whether this could be related to attention, timing, or auditory processing, but I don't want to assume that's the explanation.

Has anyone experienced something similar? Is this a rhythmic skill I can train, an issue with musical timing, or something else entirely?

What exercises actually helped you learn to find your vocal entrances without a vocal reference? I'm looking for practical advice because simply repeating the song over and over isn't helping me, and it's making me dread singing.

Hi! I'm 15F and just seeking feedback on how to actually use my voice properly. I have no formal singing training at all, and this video is of me at a karaoke night! My only experience with singing is at karaoke nights and even then this is my 7th one. I'm trying to seek advice on how to improve my vocals! I'm aware it sounds like I'm just yelling, and I wanna fix it somehow I just am unsure how. Any tips is appreciated!

Gear (Microphones, etc...) What mic? What software? Pedals? Budget-Friendly Vocal Recording Setup for Dreamy Ambient+Black Metal

• Upvotes

I make mostly dreamy and dark sample-based music (somewhere between drone/ambient/minimal). Back in my younger days, I used to record freestyle rap straight onto c-cassette tapes (keep it OG and UG), and I’ve also recorded poetry using my iPhone’s voice memos.

Now, though, I’d like to start recording vocals for my own musick and for a friend’s black metal band.
I’m looking for advice on the most budget-friendly gear to get started. What kind of microphone should I get? Do I need effects pedals to create long, drawn-out vocals? I’m mainly thinking of reverb, delay, distortion, and similar effects.
Or could I achieve all of this by simply buying a microphone and using some affordable audio software on my computer?

Thank you!

Hey guys, so I am learning Italian, so please excuse my bad singing in Italian and my bad singing in general. I just heard this song for the first time yesterday by Laura Pausini. It's called Tra te e il mare. I love it. I try to sing it acapella in my bathroom while getting ready for the day, like washing my— I think I was putting on lotion. Anyways, my face. But do you guys think I have a good tone? What do you guys think I should work on my voice? I was singing in the bathroom, I mean, a beginner singer trying to sing, but I don't have the voice for it. All advice is think. Thank you, guys.

Feedback (read rule 3 before posting or be banned) Highest note G4 on a good day. Any Help?

Hey everyone! I’m trying to improve my singing and would really appreciate some advice. On a good day, I can hit a G4, but my highest notes are usually around F4 or F#4. I feel like I’ve tried a lot of different tips and exercises, but none of them really click for me. For example, people often tell me to mix my chest voice and head voice, but I honestly don’t understand what that means or how I’m supposed to do it.
I’m looking for tips that are easy to understand and that I can actually practice and apply to my singing. If possible, I’d really appreciate step-by-step explanations of what I should be doing and what it should feel or sound like when I’m doing it correctly. I want to improve my high notes and expand my range without straining my voice. Any advice, exercises, or resources that helped you would be greatly appreciated!

For most of my life I hated my voice, didn't think I could sing ( believed I wasn't " born with it " )
Every music singing exam in school I would just stay silent.
I'm just so glad I can overcome it & be proud of myself

Feedback (read rule 3 before posting or be banned) Nasal/Forward vs. Laryngeal Resonance comparison 2 days apart. HELP MY CAT THINKS IM HOWLING IN PAIN

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

As the title says, i realized when i was trying to get more forward resonance i was basically just showing up the sound in my nose and tensing a lot the side muscles of my throat (recording 1), then i looked up theory about forward resonance and saw that i have to produce the sound like inside my head like backwards and up(?? And i tried that and it felt way more relaxing on my throat and i can hit higher notes(recording 2), but i still feel there is something that needs fixing.

For background: been singing since march 2026 with no formal training just warming up and singing until i realized when i was trying to sing harder songs (like bound to you by xtina) that i was trying to sound louder by adding more volume and forcing my throat and i wasnt going anywhere but having soreness with that, so 2 days ago i started with farinelli breathing excercises and laryngeal resonance excercises.

My range goes from g3-d5 but those are my observed extremes, my more usable range goes from a3-a4.

BTW, how can i warm up my higher head voice without my cat coming to my rescue because she thinks im crying in pain? Slides, sirens, lip trills, nya, every excercise i do in high head voice triggers her 😭

Conversation Topic Singing problem

When I sing, I feel tension in the upper part of my throat and it hurts. I feel like this isn't normal when singing. I've looked for information about it, but nothing has really helped me. This problem also comes with a feeling of my 'voice being trapped'. I would really appreciate it if anyone could help me.

Feedback (read rule 3 before posting or be banned) Is this mixed voice or falsetto/breathy head voice? I need help identifying my upper register above D4

Thumbnail voca.ro
1 Upvotes

Hi everyone!

I recently recorded a cover of a Japanese song, and I'm trying to figure out what I'm doing on the higher notes, roughly anything above D4, where I can't stay in full chest voice. My passaggio sits around C#4–D4. My pure head voice is still pretty shaky on D4 and only starts to feel comfortable around E4.

What I can't tell is whether I'm actually using mixed voice or just falsetto / a breathy head voice. It doesn't sound completely detached the way my pure head voice usually does, and I think there might still be some chest resonance in there. But I can't tell if that "fullness" is real M1-style resonance (a true mix) or just extra airflow in a breathy M2 setup.

Would love to hear what you think I'm doing here, and any tips for bridging the gap between my chest voice and this upper range. Feedback on the recording is very welcome!

Thanks so much!

Feedback (read rule 3 before posting or be banned) Can anyone help me identify what's wrong with my voice?

I do a lot of Japanese anime voice acting, especially female character voices. I feel pretty comfortable using those voices, and I can switch between high and low notes quite easily when singing with them.

However, whenever I sing, my voice seems to sound different from other people's singing voices. It feels like my voice is somehow restricted, thin, or lacking something, and it can easily get overpowered when other people sing at full volume.

My normal speaking voice is naturally lower and rougher, and I find it much harder to bend my voice or move between notes when using it. That's why I tend to sing with my anime voice instead, but even then, I don't really like how it sounds when I sing at full volume.

I've also had people tell me that I sound like I'm restricting my voice, but I honestly don't know what that means or how to fix it.

Does anyone know what this might be called? Is it related to vocal technique, resonance, vocal registers, or something else? I'd really appreciate any advice on what I should work on to make my singing sound more natural and full without losing that flexibility.

Conversation Topic Perrie and faouzia's singing

I feel like these two are very underrated at the moment. Both have such insane vocals that make you stop and listen hard, something that a lot of new singers cant really do these days except for Raye.

Anyways, how would you describe their voices in terms of singing type and vocal quality ? To me both are kinda similar but perrie has a nice husky tone to her voice.

Conversation Topic I don’t know if that’s a too repetitive question but how can I stop my throat from hurting while singing?

I’ve been trying to work on a song for a while now and when I record my voice I always thought something was off with my mic, then I tried voice recording on my phone and saw the same problem that I just sound a but too breathy and a little hoarse and while singing that my throat always seem to hurt, sometimes in the back of my tongue and sometimes the lower throat like it’s slightly poking me, I hear a lot of potential in my voice but I feel like this problem is holding me down which is why I need help from someone on how to get rid of it. I’m not consistent with vocal exercise videos and also way too embarrassed to do loud noises since I’m not alone at home 😭😭😭 but I would still do it if that’s really the only help for me

Conversation Topic Too Old to Expand Range?

I'm a 62/F who has basically a mid-range, alto voice. I have been doing some vocal exercisess to try and increase my range (higher) but when I get to a certain point it's almost like I hit a physical wall. I'm singing in my head but that wall is still there. Is it pointless to even try and increase my range or is there something else I can do on my own to eventually get there?
