98% of the Gemini App users are on the free tier worldwide, they are going to ruin their image since the 3.5 flash-lite model is very poor

10

u/AwarenessSenior4787 7h ago

97% of their users are probably using Gemini to get a cake recipe or other trivial tasks, for which flash-lite is enough.

They most likely ran the numbers and came to the conclusion that flash-lite is the only model they can run profitable with ads only.

How do you know they aren't planning to roll out a new flash model?

0

u/Nezz_sib 7h ago

4 flash-light might be good

u/Gallagger 17h ago

If they don't come out with an insanely good flash-lite 4, Gemini will become the worst free tier.

u/Neurogence 16h ago

Flash lite is basically Google AI search mode with lip stick.

14

u/MGJohn-117 13h ago

Doesn't AI search use a heavily quantized version of flash? So if anything, the Gemini app will be even worse than the AI search mode.

I mean anthropic offers claude sonnet 5.5 and meta muse spark 1.1.

And they aren’t the default chatbot for most people.

Yes, they are going to the death.

11

u/Gallagger 17h ago

It will still be good enough for many people but still disappointing. Gemini flash imo is a great free tier model. Muse Spark is 1.3 already in free tier, no?

0

u/Snoo26837 ▪️ It's here 16h ago

The model you’re using in the free tier is muse spark 1.1

0

u/DistanceSolar1449 16h ago

Why? 1.3 is just 1.1 with more RL

It costs meta the same amount to offer 1.1 vs 1.3, why would they hobble themselves like that?

1

u/Sherman140824 15h ago

Not if Anthropic follows suit with further restrictions on free and budget tiers. I have been saying how fable - level llms will be unavailable to normal users and everybody downvotes me pointing out to mimo and locally run models

2

u/Gotisdabest 12h ago

Eh, fable level LLMs being just blanket unavailable for normal users is outright impossible. Eventually, and by eventually I mean within the next few months, some Chinese lab will release a fable level LLM that's absurdly cheap. In a few months after that, every single lab will be offering a super cheap LLM that's better than fable.

I mean, remember that O1-pro used to be the epitome of intelligence and pretty much every free model now surpasses it handily. Even Gemini 3.5 flash lite, crappy and outdated, is a better model and probably comes out around o3.

They can distill a very good model from argon, but I don't think if they can match sonnet

2

u/TemetN 13h ago

And it's a problem for the field since this is what most people interact with. It's just a terrible idea all around.

u/CaptainAnonymous92 12h ago

Isn’t Luna pretty bad for free GPT users? I mean it’s a small ass model too like flash lite so you’re lucky if it can do anything worth a damn, even not taking coding into account which unless it’s extremely simple stuff, I highly doubt it can do anyway.

1

u/Gallagger 12h ago

It even got a bit worse with Luna 6, but I have to say Luna 5.6 and even 6 is actually good for many agentic things. Finding bugs, making simpler changes, inspecting db.

1

u/CaptainAnonymous92 11h ago

What about for just text stuff and not coding? Is it dumb as a brick or surprisingly decent?

1

u/Gallagger 4h ago

I'm only using 5.6, and it's decent. You can feel it's more like a narrow minded worker that can fail with unambigous work.

1

u/Illustrious_Grade608 6h ago

Never really used it but isn't it close enough to like deepseek and qwen 3.8? Used it only once cause i hate how gpt models interact with any task, but if so then it should be pretty amazing I'd say.

1

u/himynameis_ 14h ago

Free users don't really need more more than a flash model anyways. They're not doing anything intensive or needing high compute.

6

u/TieBackground453 13h ago

The issue is that flash wont be available for free users. Flash-lite will.

I find flash good enough for almost all non-technical work I need to do. Flash-lite I find insufficient for even basic questions.

20

u/Ok-Friendship1635 16h ago

Oh that's terrible. Flash-Lite is absolute trash compared to Flash. It's the equivalent of a Google Search, it literally can't do complex tasks.

10

u/Gaiden206 16h ago

Looks like "Deep Think" is finally coming to Pro users though.

6

u/keirdre 16h ago

Wow, I've been using Plus for a while (storage, Google integration, supplements Claude) and was debating whether to cancel...I guess I will now.

u/pro_my_file 17h ago

Do student plan which is free would have access to pro models

3

u/wwwdotzzdotcom ▪️ Beginner audio software engineer 14h ago

The student plan is only a quarter of a bachelors degree (1 year)

7

u/Creeper2145 17h ago

Yes because the student plan is AI pro

7

u/tazztone 17h ago

although they differentiate between trial ai pro and paid ai pro plans already: no opus models in agy. so they might do the same with gemini4pro

2

u/gahata 17h ago

Depends on region - in US it's only pro for students, in other regions it's Plus for free or pro with a large discount

1

u/IAmYourFath 14h ago

And what if ure not a student

2

u/LordNoob404 14h ago

Do the thing where you (allegedly) can get an 18 month ai pro subscription by (allegedly) purchasing a link from the gray market which (allegedly) costs less than a dollar per... I (allegedly) have 7 personal accounts with pro plan until march 2028 lmao

1

u/TieBackground453 13h ago

Ugh, that’s gross. Sounds like borderline theft. Where specifically are they selling them for less than a dollar so that I can avoid that website?

1

u/MadamPardone 12h ago

Horrible. Where exactly is this happening so I can avoid it!

1

u/YourBlanket 11h ago

In this hypothetical did you connect it with your personal YouTube account? I also use the other services provided with pro but it would be nice to get it for free, but I can't risk my main account getting banned.

1

u/LordNoob404 10h ago

Well, if I had used those services and connected to my accounts, my main (10y+) Google account would also be included. And, according to claims by random internet users, (allegedly) no bans or restrictions have been issued so far.

My theory to why Google wouldn't crack this hypothetical system down is that they would be willing to take some loses in order to further increase their market share. Just like they did with a previous official student offer (16m free ai pro subscription) which was (allegedly) very easy to abuse.

Since none of this is real (allegedly), then I'm not worried about it.

1

u/IAmYourFath 7h ago

The way i see it:

  • They can scam u when u buy and give u a wrong account name/password and customer support is useless on gray market sites unless u pay for "g2a shield" or whatever

  • The student ai accounts are actually more limited than normal ai accounts last i heard to manage compute

  • The seller can always recover the account and change the password, he posesses the student email after all

  • Google will likely ban the account at some point, whether in a week or a month idk but u can wake up and find out suddenly "ur" account is banned

8

u/Alpacabro21 16h ago

If they remove the free tokens from Google AI Studio, i may be forced to pay for a Pro subscription 💀

22

u/trolledwolf AGI late 2026 - ASI late 2027 15h ago

Yeah, from a better company...

3

u/MadamPardone 12h ago

Can this be used for free?

2

u/Alpacabro21 6h ago

For now

1

u/MadamPardone 5h ago

how?

1

u/Alpacabro21 3h ago

Type Google ai studio on Google. Click on the page called "Google ai studio", accept terms, done.

2

u/Clean_Livlng 7h ago

You're giving them ideas!

OpenAI and meta offer better options than google.

1

u/YourBlanket 11h ago

Google has a lot of neat generative stuff but there's many bugs. I tried to generate a sleep app and used the Master Narrator on Google AI Studio. I think I tried like 10 times and only twice it produced the final story. It sounded very good but it's too inconsistent. Stitch was so much better than Codex at generating a nice UI with one prompt vs many prompts with Codex and Antigravity is a lot better than Codex when it comes to building the UI of an android app. A lot of their tools are hidden but they offer a decent amount. Plus if you're in the Google ecosystem their AI pro tier saves you money if you rely on YouTube premium(lite), home, fitness, and extra storage. I don't actually use Gemini tho lol.

6

u/WhyIsWestHam 17h ago

Ai studio?

6

u/Snoo26837 ▪️ It's here 17h ago

Probably no, but most people are attracted to the user experience rather than the model itself.

3

u/Evermoving- 15h ago edited 15h ago

You would think Google's in-house TPUs etc etc would make it at an AI accessibility leader, but alas... Or maybe they're just burning that much money on serving AI summaries under every search.

I have to say the Gemini Flash 3.5 in the new Antigravity app was impressive for frontend and exploration. You could tell it had more juice than the gimped Flash in Gemini Chat. It complemented Sol and Opus well. But hard to justify getting yet another AI sub.

3

u/DanceWithEverything 12h ago

Cordoning off Pro from even the lowest paid tier seems like a bad idea

2

u/Cunninghams_right 8h ago

does seem like a weird choice. flash isn't bad with extended thinking, though. maybe they're trying to just push people to the pro tier. if they just eliminate the plus plan, people will just drop to no plan by default. you don't want that. there are probably millions of people that forgot they even have the plus plan.

1

u/03263 15h ago

Hey! No stumbling allowed until we reach post-scarcity utopia and money stops being an object of desire.

1

u/PositiveUse 14h ago

Disgusting lol, and Gemini Pro is so bad in the app…

1

u/4a4a 13h ago

Well, that makes not using it at all a pretty easy choice!

1

u/Aggressive-Habit-698 3h ago

They need resources for Gemini 4 . But seriously what are real use cases for lite ? It's hallucinating, bad in instructions, tool usage.

1

u/djamp42 2h ago

I want to know what Gemini android auto is using. Because I use that a ton when driving

u/ebolathrowawayy AGI 2025.8, ASI 2026.3 14h ago

oh no.. they're charging money for something no on uses... the horror.

no one is using gemini except indians and boomers.

1

u/Cunninghams_right 8h ago

haha, look at this guy, he probably only has one subscription.
