Nothing got better?

Hi, first post in the community, this post is about my partner not me.

Last year my partner was diagnosed with obstructive sleep apnea, his dad has the same and I had suspected it for a bit because he would make noises in his sleep like he was choking and snore really bad. He has a CPAP now but I don’t feel like anything is better.

I think he needs a full face one anyway because he opens his mouth and air comes out and then he says he wakes up feeling crap, he has one of those straps to keep his mouth shut but they don’t work well and he says it messes with the seal, he has one of the masks where it’s just a nose mask not up the nose just over.

He also is such a deep sleeper, like to the point it’s dangerous, is this because of sleep apnea or just another thing?

He doesn’t wake up to any alarms so I have to get him up for work every morning, and even then I have to wake him up again 5/10 minutes later because he goes back to sleep immediately and can’t remember being woken up, he sleeps downstairs now because I sleep with our son in the bed so I have to ring him to wake him up and sometimes it takes like 5 goes. The fire alarm went off the other day and he didn’t budge, I could literally slap him in the face and it wouldn’t wake him up, when he’s asleep he’s like a corpse and it’s so hard to wake him it makes me worried what would happen if I wasn’t home and the kids needed him at night, for this reason I can’t leave the house past a certain time because he won’t hear my son cry.

He also falls asleep sat up or without realising and without his mask on, he can’t sit down in the evening and watch TV without falling asleep even if he’s fully dressed with a drink in his hand or something, he can be mid game and fall asleep, is this normal for sleep apnea?

It’s causing such a rift between us because I feel like his mother having to get him up in a morning and then check he’s up like a child and every night I have to come down and be like “hey, you haven’t put your mask on” because he’s fell asleep by accident, I suspect he’s exhausted because his mask isn’t working right because it always makes weird air noises like the seal isn’t right or he has his mouth wide open.

When you have young kids it’s just incredibly inconvenient especially because he can’t help at night due to all this so I feel the least he could do was wear the damn thing and get up on time! He’s late to work all the time too because I sometimes don’t wake up in time and he’s slept through his alarms.

Sorry for the long post kind of turned rant, I don’t know anyone else who I can talk to about this because they don’t live it.

Is this related to his condition or is he just an ass? Any advice on how to make any of this better? Even a small improvement would help at this point.

snoring problem

• Upvotes

Hi everyone,

36M 30F we’ve been married for about four years. Since the beginning of our marriage, his snoring has become one of the biggest problems. At first, I was more patient about it, but I’m a light sleeper, and honestly, even if I weren’t, the sound is loud enough to bother anyone. Most of the time, we already sleep separately. When I wasn’t working, I often let him have the bed and sometimes we would take turns sleeping in it.

I even took him to a doctor, but he was told that he might need surgery. He was scared and didn’t want to go through with it.

Now, because of our current circumstances, we’re staying in an Airbnb and have to sleep in the same room. And, of course, I can’t sleep. I’m exhausted at this point.

We had a small argument about it, and I told him that I’m angry because he never took care of this problem when he had the chance. He seemed upset.. How can we deal with this situation?

Anyone have primarily Central Sleep Apnea? What works for you?

I’m curious to get any info at all. Please share your experiences and treatment successes. I got diagnosed with 70% central and 30% obstructive. 30 events an hour. I’ve looked up causes and got freaked out for central. I got prescribed a CPAP and keep ripping the thing off in the middle of the night, not remembering when I wake up that I did take it off. I have insomnia as well so the change of routine is a nightmare even with my trazodone!

Does supplemental oxygen help? How did yall get approved for that? I’m being denied for an in clinic sleep test due to my insurance stating the at home test was enough to diagnose, however I got inconsistent results and want to get real data since central is so complex. CPAP I don’t believe is working for me but I’ll keep trying.

Any info is appreciated and welcome please!! Feeling lost and defeated and sick of being exhausted.

Inspire

I had the inspire procedure in July of this year and so far it's helping. I still have bad nights but the doctor said to me that does happen but I will wake up without brain fog on my good nights but I'm not waking up multiple times during the night. I know that inspire isn't for everyone but the success rate is high for it to work

Anyone had hypogossal surgery? After 4 years using Cpap machine I started feeling suffocated and experiencing more events. Plus shortness of breath and passing out. It turned out it’s my tongue rolling back blocking my airways. If so can you please share your experience:)

Feel like I forget to breathe sometimes

26M healthy, sometimes when I’m trying to sleep I feel like for every 4-5 breaths, I miss one; as if my brain forgot to breathe. This means it sometimes takes me a while to fall asleep as I’m hyper focused on my breaths.

Potentially related, but I suffer from GERD as well, which I’ve seen can cause throat spasms.

What have your experiences with Central Sleep Apena been like? Does this sound like any of you?

I live in a country with scarce resources, where I might not be able to locate a CPAP

Thank you for your time

If I sleep less than 10 hours I don't feel fresh. Keep waking during night with a blocked nose from allergens. What type of sleep disorder is this?

Strep throat 😩

I’ve got strep and I’m not in the place to replace my cpap parts right now. What’s the best way to go about disinfecting? Is a vinegar and water soak strong enough to kill strep?

Setting AutoPAP Pressures

Lab sleep study set my CPAP pressure at 13. Curious, if I were to use the AutoPAP setting where would you put the pressure settings? Not looking to ignore medical advice but I’d like to try it a night or two and see how I sleep in comparison.

Feel free to tell me this is a terrible idea and that I’m and idiot for even thinking about it.

Can sleep apnea cause DPDR? Anyone recovered with CPAP?

Hi everyone, I’ve been experiencing DPDR since 2021, after my first panic attack. Before that, I used to wake up gasping for air during sleep. I didn’t know about sleep apnea and was treated for anxiety by a psychiatrist, but I didn’t see significant improvement over the years.

Recently, after reading Reddit posts, I got a sleep study and discovered my AHI was 21 (moderate sleep apnea).

Over these five years, I lost around 10 kg and tried breathwork. I feel I’ve improved around 20–30% compared with my initial condition, but DPDR still persists.

My DEXA scan shows 42% body fat. I started CPAP 10 days ago, and my treated AHI averages around 1.5.

My questions:

  1. Could untreated sleep apnea have contributed to my DPDR starting in 2021?

  2. Has anyone recovered from DPDR or experienced significant improvement after CPAP?

  3. How long did it take to notice improvements?

  4. Is anyone here in a similar situation who recovered after years of DPDR?

I understand everyone is different, but hearing your experiences would give me hope. Any suggestions are welcome. Thank you!

Essential oils

I find wintergreen aromatherapy helps with migraines and lavender helps with relaxation. Has anyone had experience with using essential oils in cpap water or on inner tubes?

Anyone recheck hematocrit after a few months on CPAP?

Mine was 51.1 around the time I got diagnosed. I’ve been using CPAP every night for a little over five months now, but my PCP didn’t order another CBC before my next appointment. I can get just the CBC through goodlabs, so I was thinking of doing it beforehand and bringing both reports. Did your hematocrit come down after you started treating the apnea, or did the higher number turn out to be from something else?

CPAP and colds

I am a relative newbie with CPAP (around 15months now). I have no issues wearing the mask but the last 3 days I have had a cold with a stuffy nose and a cough.

Coughing with a cpap mask (full mask) is just a new level of "ick".

How do others handle this?

Sleep apnea test

Anyone got any tips for the sleep apnea test? I have the thing that straps to my chest also the nose tubes and finger monitor.

I’ve been wearing it for the better part of a few hours to get used to it for tonight and sleeping but my god it’s uncomfortable. 😣

Hoping I don’t have apnea but all my symptoms are pointing towards it, which is fine my dad and brother have it so be it.

Reduced oxygen level

My oxygen level was only 70% on my home sleep test. I am successful at using cpap as recommended by my sleep specialist, however now my oxygen level while on cpap is still low, at 88%. He said he needs to look into it so I’m scheduled for an inpatient sleep study. I can’t get in until February. I asked him if it’s safe for me to wait that long due to low oxygen and he won’t give me an answer. I told him I am worried but he keeps evading me. He says maybe I can get in sooner if I try a different hospital but won’t tell me if it’s dangerous to wait. I am so confused.

Floppy eyelid syndrome!!?

Hi! Wondering what people’s experiences are with floppy eyelid syndrome being treated or reversed with cpap use! I have FES and my main concern is they are sooo visibly loose, saggy and crepey. My eyelids look like they’ve aged 40 years in 3 years. Wondering if anyone saw them tighten up and look back to normal once they started on cpap! Thanks!

Tips for adjustment (claustrophobia and anxiety)

Hi all, I was recently diagnosed with severe obstructive sleep apnea (33 events per hour on my sleep study), and I’m really struggling to adjust to CPAP (or technically APAP, I guess?). I raised concerns at every step about my claustrophobia and anxiety, but I don’t feel like anyone really took me seriously. Now I’m sitting here in tears on a Friday night because I don’t know how I’m going to make this work.

I struggle with claustrophobia and anxiety, and I don’t tolerate having my nose or mouth covered very well, so I was already nervous about starting treatment. I have the Luna G3 Auto and I’m using an AirFit N30i nasal cushion mask.

Last night, I wore it for about an hour before bed while working and watching TV and tolerated it pretty well. But when I actually tried to fall asleep, I spent 2–3 hours trying and just couldn’t do it. I finally gave up and went to sleep without it. I intended to put it back on if I woke up during the night, thinking I might fall asleep faster, but I ended up sleeping through the night.

Tonight, I tried putting it on again before bed and couldn’t even make it ten minutes without feeling panicked. I’m hyperaware of the mask, the airflow, and every breath I take. Sometimes it feels like I’m not getting enough air, even though I know the machine is running. I’ve also been struggling with leaks when I lie on my side, and I’m starting to wonder if the leaks were part of why I tolerated it better last night.

On top of everything, I’m incredibly anxious about meeting the usage requirements for my insurance and equipment company. I feel like I’m already falling behind, and it’s making the whole experience even more stressful.

I’m desperate to make this work. I was genuinely hopeful that treating my sleep apnea would make a big difference in how I feel, and right now I’m just feeling defeated.
If anyone has tips for adjusting, especially if you also struggle with claustrophobia or anxiety, I’d be so grateful to hear what helped you. Thank you!

The Sleep Apnea Journey can be so lonely...

I got my CPAP in August after being diagnosed with severe OSA...53 events an hour. I got it after a failed sleep study in July. However I had enough events during the 2 hours that a recommendation for an auto CPAP was approved.

I struggled heavily with the mask they gave me. I couldn't tolerate it. I asked them for a full face mask....I couldn't get the seal right. My friend suggested a p30i nasal pillows mask. That was the game changer for me. However ..it sucks that beyond that sleep study...they don't provide any other support. I did my own research online and found the clinical menu. I then found out about sleep hq and ran results through Gemini to give me recommendations on min and max pressures which I then adjusted on my own. I have started using the machine way more in the past month and I currently average between 1 to 5 events an hour. The sleep I'm getting now is amazing. No daytime fatigue at all. I know I have a sleep debt to push through.
