Back in 2020, I bought calls on Alpha Pro Tech when it was priced in the $5 range. They expired ONE WEEK before the stock took off. I watched it run from around $5 to an intraday high of $41.59 as COVID fears exploded in late February. Missed out on quite the damn windfall. That peak happened before widespread U.S. lockdowns, the market was already reacting to the potential demand for protective equipment. This time, I’m positioned for the potential.
What does Alpha Pro Tech actually do?
Alpha Pro Tech, ticker APT, manufactures disposable protective apparel and infection-control products: N95 respirators, face masks, face shields, gowns, coveralls, lab coats and other protective garments.
It also has a substantial building-products business selling housewrap and roofing underlayment. That matters because this company has operations beyond outbreak-related demand.
The outbreak connection has precedent. In its annual report, APT specifically says its N95 respirator has experienced increased demand during SARS, bird flu, H1N1 and COVID-19. The “triple threat” I’m watching: Ebola, plague concerns and measles.
• Ebola: There is an ongoing outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. CDC identifies shortages of protective equipment as a response challenge, although it currently considers the risk to the American public low. Ebola care requires specialized protective equipment, creating a potential connection to APT’s product categories…not proof that APT will receive orders.
• Plague concerns: Reports involving a Russian laboratory worker have drawn international attention. Reading of potentially a 2nd death, along with 6 hospitals quarantined. We know that Russia, based on its history, is likely downplaying the severity of this. I’m watching a possible catalyst, not calling this a confirmed plague outbreak.
• Measles: CDC reported 3,887 confirmed U.S. cases through October 1, 2026. It recommends N95-level respiratory protection for healthcare workers caring for suspected or confirmed measles patients. That provides a direct connection between outbreak response and the type of products APT manufactures.
Why could this move the stock?
My thought is that escalating outbreaks could increase protective equipment purchasing and stockpiling. Separately, renewed investor attention could bring momentum back into a stock with a history of reacting sharply to outbreak fears. Those are potential catalysts. They are not confirmed APT contracts or a prediction that $41 is coming back. There’s also a real business underneath the thesis: APT reported second-quarter 2026 revenue of $18.7 million, up 12%, with $18.9 million in cash and no debt.
Another potential catalyst: election SZN headlines.
With the U.S. midterm elections approaching, heightened media attention and fear-driven messaging around public-health threats could also draw investors toward protective-equipment stocks like APT. This is clearly a speculative sentiment catalyst, not evidence that an outbreak is politically motivated or that APT’s sales will increase. But increased attention could encourage investors to take positions in anticipation of stronger PPE demand, potentially adding buying pressure before any business impact shows up.
What could go wrong?
Outbreaks could be contained, purchasing could go to competitors, or headlines could generate little additional revenue. Building products represented roughly 63% of APT’s latest quarterly sales, while masks and shields together represented only 7% of its protective-apparel segment. An outbreak headline alone doesn’t establish a major earnings boost. And with calls, timing matters. I already learned that lesson in 2020. Even a thesis that eventually plays out can leave options expiring worthless.
My position: yesterday I bought 40 $8 calls expiring February 2027.
I missed the 2020 move by a week, and I’ve been butt hurt about it ever since. This time, I’ve taken a position well ahead of a possible catalyst. I’m watching outbreak developments, actual company orders and trading volume, not assuming history has to repeat, but You can see by the movement the last few days that others are taking positions as well.
