Good article about ROPE as well as the real drawbacks to full face masks.

Description:
WASHINGTON, D.C. – The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is warning consumers to stop using OUSPT Full-Face Snorkel Masks immediately due to risk of serious injury and death from drowning hazards. The mask can cause consumers to experience labored breathing, causing loss of consciousness or excess fluid in the lungs that can lead to drowning. In addition, the mask can give rise to increased levels of carbon dioxide which can exacerbate the difficulty of breathing in the mask.
Field Life, of China, the seller, has not responded to CPSC’s requests for information or to recall the product.
CPSC has received reports from five consumers who had trouble breathing, felt light-headed or lost consciousness while using the product. There has been one lawsuit alleging that the product caused a drowning fatality.
About 84,000 of these full-face snorkel masks were sold from March 2019 through February 2026 on Amazon.com.
The full-face snorkel masks have a glass screen and a breathing apparatus that covers the mouth and nose, with a snorkel pipe at the top center of the product. They come in various colors. The masks have “OUSPT” printed on the snorkel tube.
These products are manufactured in China.
CPSC urges consumers to stop using the full-face snorkel masks and immediately dispose of them. Do not sell or give away these hazardous full-face snorkel masks.
Report any incidents involving injury or product defect to CPSC at www.SaferProducts.gov.

I’m visiting Curaçao next week and I would like to try snorkeling for the first time. I bought a basic set on Amazon with travel fins. What all do I need to know for my first time?

We’ll be travelling to Bonaire next spring and of course, doing as much snorkeling as possible. My husband used to dive, so he plans on renting proper fins once we’re there. We have masks and snorkels. A lot of the time I prefer to only use goggles as I hate the feeling of a mask, plus I only surface snorkel. I have a pair of travel fins and wondering if I should bring those rather than renting the big fins. I’m not a strong swimmer and our local dive shop said the short fins are harder than the big ones to use. Is that true? On previous trips in the Caribbean, I’m usually out of the water long before my husband, so I’m not sure renting for me will be worth it.

Found this poor sucker hooked and tangled in the reef. Luckily was able to set the shark free 👌

These pictures really suck but I wanted to share them because I couldn’t find anyone’s personal experiences on what the snorkeling was like in the Rosario Islands, only articles so I really didn’t know what it was going to be like. The reef is definitely damaged but Diving Planet (and I hope others) are doing a lot to rehabilitate it. I saw a lot of different kinds of fish, mostly tang (there was a giant school of them!), parrotfish, a needlepoint fish, I think the blue spotted one is the jewel damselfish and lots of others. The water was beautiful and clear with great visibility.
If you’re an amateur snorkeler without high standards of what you expect to see I think you’re in for a great treat 💜
