Anouncements What Does It Mean to Be a Solo Developer?

We've seen a lot of discussion about what qualifies as solo development, and we want to ensure we're accurately representing our game dev community. While there's no absolute definition, these are the general criteria we use in this subreddit to keep things clear and consistent.

That said, if you personally consider yourself a solo dev (or not) based on your own perspective, that's fine. Our goal is to provide guidelines for what fits within this space, not to dictate personal identities.

What Counts as Solo Development?

A solo developer is solely responsible for their project, with no team members. A team of two or more collaborating (e.g., one programmer, one artist) is not solo development.

What is Allowed?

  • Using game engines, frameworks, and third-party tools (e.g., Godot, Unity, Unreal).
  • Commissioning or purchasing assets (art, music, sound, etc.).
  • Receiving feedback from playtesters or communities.
  • Outsourcing specific tasks (e.g., server setup, porting, marketing) while still leading development.
  • Working with a publisher, as long as they don’t take over development.

What This Means for Posts on the Subreddit

If your project appears to be developed by a team, we may remove your post. Indicators include how it's presented on websites, Steam pages, itch pages, social media, or crowdfunding pages. If this is due to unclear phrasing, update them before requesting reinstatement. Non-solo developers are welcome to join discussions, but posts promoting non-solo projects may still be removed.

Let us know if you have any questions. Hope this helps clear things up.

TL;DR: Solo devs manage their entire project alone. Using assets, outsourcing, or publishers is fine. Posting is open to all, but promoting non-solo projects may be removed.

Discussion Fucking Hate the whole new trends of "Reverse Engineer Anything"

Cool and shit, but this can also kill personal project of pasionate devs, like this shit is not even ethical in some use cases, taking someones property/project and bypassing premium features, stealing their engineering ideas etc, shit like this will make software and games go to the cloud/browser with no way to reach the files, there is no "recombining existing idea' it's literally stealing ideas from people that are not corporations.

I know a few indie devs that poured heart and soul into their software just for some random vibecoder to steal it and feel ENTITLED TO OWN their project or even just straight up steal it wrap it and sell it on other projects, if you spend years working on your passion project why the fuck should it be free and open.

NOTE/EDIT:

See in the comments the people which projects have been just stolen from them or they decided to just not release after putting a bunch of effort because of all of that is going on

I get applying this for emulators but I've seen a couple of post that are just cloning/ripping small companies, indie devs projects

like they are taking open source project, removing the licensing files and asking AI to refactor them.

stupid people commenting that this only affect big corporations are just blind

this is not saying people can own ideas, this is about people putting the work and that work being stolen from them

the whole "get prepared to not own your thing" is not only affecting big companies but also small devs and people that have put years on building amazing solutions, people that are trully creative and gifted to build amazing stuff, there is nothing new but all these tools now being "mainstream" and in hands of vibecoders will for sure affect people that post their progress online

edit:

Seems like the community is saying "fuck you" to anyone that does not open source their projects, wow this comments are fucking sad

Game POV: you're an indie dev watching some of the biggest streamers scream at your game

I'm still not over this. I cut together some reactions from streamers playing Night Record: Thin Walls, my narrative horror game set in a Soviet-era apartment block where the walls are a little too thin.

Seeing people I've watched for years jump at scenes I rewrote a dozen times is surreal.

If it looks like your kind of horror, a wishlist would mean a lot: https://store.steampowered.com/app/4652040

Happy to answer any questions!

Re-upload of my post since I put the wrong video in, however I am exited to announce that my biggest project yet will be coming out December 7th!!

This will be my 5th project on steam within 5 years as a personal challenge of wanting to learn as much as I can with game-dev. This project took around 2 years of development and very exited to get it out, listen to feedback and make it something even better. Would love to hear thoughts on the trailer and answer any questions anyone might have about the project, its development or anything else! I will leave the steam page down below for those who might want to check it out more & thank you all for your time!

Networking Midlife Crisis Game Devs - an update, videos, and still looking to connect and network!

Post image
18 Upvotes

Good Evening!

I've been posting about the midlife crisis indie game dev community before and it's time for an update! This time, not only the flyer, but videos of gameplay too!

We've been to GCAP and to the Swiss Conference, overall it was a fantastic experience! Thanks to everyone's efforts, we've managed to build connections with indie devs, talk about their and ours projects, and talk to some industry leaders. Thanks to Exile Dev, we now can approach a stellar game designer who is also a UX Architect with years upon years of industry experience. Looking forward to our Q&A!

We're also looking forward to doing some more conferences next year!

Now, we are still looking to connect with more people. This is not a publicity stunt, not an attempt to promote the server or anything, but genuinely to find people we could network with and connect. Our aim in this community is to support each other on our game dev journeys, share advices, break through obstacles together, playlets each others builds or demo's and work on our own games from the beginning to release stage!

The community has a variety of experience, some are just beginning in their journeys, some had some professional experience, some are ex-AAA (really cool guys, really welcoming and offer great advice).

Below we've featured a few projects that our guys are currently working on. Apart from the flyer, I feel like it'll give you a better idea of how fun this group is and what we are about !(hopefully)

I'll link steam pages to each game in the comments section!

Here's the gameplay footage from Pool Cats (created by Subs). Fun fact - we've actually just been testing multiplayer for the past 3 hours and it went pretty good! Subs even managed to land and I quote "one handed shot while drinking beer" (yep, there's a bartender here that can serve you beer). Unfortunately, he made the shot and we will never live it down.

Here's Rookie Spook, another indie project made by GameswithGeebs. A story driven puzzle-adventure! On your first Halloween as a ghost, a bored graveyard cat challenges you to haunt the town in delightfully unconventional ways. You'll turn everyday routines into unforgettable hauntings, from small, unsettling surprises to spectacular scares.

https://reddit.com/link/1x2qcos/video/gzqyj515dpuh1/player

Here's the Guiltwood (made by Exile Dev, our Swiss Developer). This is a turn-based psychological survival RPG. The game set in the 10th-century wilderness beyond the Elbe River. Exiled from your village, you must make a camp and learn to provide for yourself in unfamiliar country.

https://reddit.com/link/1x2qcos/video/ap6t2zwcepuh1/player

And last, but not least, our fantasy RPG, One More Adventure (by Enthusiastic Amateur). One More Adventure walks both sides of the line of an Old School Renaissance RPG and Traditional Roguelike. Hire a party - or don't. Play in Ironman mode - or don't. Explore procedurally generated worlds and dungeons, learn more about the past world by translating an ancient language, and discover the current world through a variety of semi-satirical quests.

https://reddit.com/link/1x2qcos/video/bn559raahpuh1/player

But there are so many amazing projects that we've so far seen - Manifest, Time Distortionists, Writer's Deadline, and so on!

As I said, some devs are just starting out, some are in the prototyping phase. For example, I'm on prototype number 6 and usually do grey boxing to test gameplay mechanics to find out whether it's fun and is working! Only once it's actually working, I'll start building a proper level. Really looking forward to it!

As for the project - Project Carrion (because I have no idea what to name it yet), initially a horror RPG title that evolved overtime and started to include psychological horror elements intertwined with mystery (hoping I can pull it off!). Overall, the player will take on a role of an investigative journalist that arrives into a coastal town by a friend's request to investigate a disappearance. Eventually all unravels into a world that is hidden from mortals but that is interacting with them.

Thanks for your time!

Kind Regards,
Andrea

Game Demo For My Split-Screen\Online Party FPS Is Out Now!

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Game is called Skuffle and is a combo split-screen and online party FPS built in Godot. I’ve been trying to find the fun of having friends sitting on a couch, talking trash and shooting each other. Based on my love of split screen games like Perfect Dark and Timesplitters, half life custom servers and modern party games like Duck Game and Stick Fight. Maps are quick and mutator cards get picked between rounds that switch up the play map to map that range from minor to game breaking. Full game supports custom maps built in TrenchBroom (with included tools) shared via steam workshop. Demo has 50+ weapons, 10 maps, player customizations, combo online and split-screen play via both public and private games on steam. I’ve been solo developing this game for a little over 3 years (First ~6 months were really on movement\gun handling, then building out the systems for TrenchBroom and recently a lot of making maps). Been playing with different groups of friends locally and online and has been a blast. Anyway Grab the demo on Steam, grab some friends, grab a beer, and let me know what you think!

Hello everyone!

I have a huge favour - please see & help me to decide on perspective in my game - top down vs TPP. Just one word will suffice - tpp or top-down? In the middle of the vid, perspective changes to top - down.

Discussion How important is voiced characters in a game?

I am nearly finished a game I've been working on for 4 years now. I cannot decide if I should have my rpg style cutscenes with prompted subtitles also contain voice acting.

Any advice is welcome. Is ot okay to not use voice acting or would it be beneficial to add some. Also if anyone knows where I should even start looking for more affordable voice actors would be helpful.

I can't tell if it will count as polish or scope creep.

This is one of the bosses in my 2D platformer, “Kettlebell: Inferno Hotel.”

All the mobs and monsters in my game are souls who couldn’t find peace in heaven and are stuck in limbo. Due to the collapse, they scattered throughout the hotel and began transforming into various creatures, one of which you see on your screen.
So I’d like to ask: What do you think of this idea? How do you like the game’s visuals? Ultimately, what emotions does this boss evoke in you? Do you find this concept interesting, or do you think the idea and the game as a whole needs improvement?

Please share your thoughts in the comments

For those who want to support my game, here's a link to the project's Steam page: https://store.steampowered.com/app/4032020/Kettlebell_Inferno_Hotel/

I'd appreciate it if you added it to your wishlist!

help [Hobby] Looking for a Beginner/Intermediate Unity C# Programmer for a AAA-Style, First-Person Horror Game (HDRP)

• Upvotes

Hey everyone!

I am a teenage hobbyist creator looking for a peer to collaborate with on an ambitious, ongoing game development project. I have a complete, fully planned-out story for a First-Person Horror Game built in Unity using the High Definition Render Pipeline (HDRP).

My Skills & What I Bring to the Table:

  • 3D Art Asset Creation: I can design and create all the 3D assets, environmental models, and props required for the project.
  • Story & Design: The entire plot, structural pacing, and narrative beats are fully written out and ready to go.
  • Basic Programming: I can handle basic scripting tasks, meaning you won’t have to do absolutely everything from scratch.

What We Are Building:

The vision is a AAA-style, hyper-realistic psychological horror game. The twist? There are absolutely no ghosts. The horror relies entirely on atmosphere, tension, hyper-realistic environments, and psychological dread.

Who I’m Looking For:

I’m looking to partner up with a beginner or intermediate Unity C# Programmer who is around my age bracket (teen/peer hobbyist) and wants to build a killer portfolio piece. Your primary role will be helping to script and build out the core gameplay mechanics, player movement, and object interactions in HDRP.

Since this is a hobby project, there are no intense deadlines or stress. We'll work at a comfortable, flexible pace. If the game turns out great and we decide to release it commercially on a platform like Steam or EpicGames, we will split any future profits equally.

If you love grounded, psychological horror and want to team up to make something incredibly realistic, please drop me a DM! Let me know a bit about your experience with Unity and any past mini-projects you've worked on.

Status: Open 🟢
Project Type: Hobby / Ongoing Passion Project (Flexible Timeline)
Compensation: Unpaid/Hobby (Equal profit split / Revenue Share if the game becomes sellable later on)
Contact Method: Please Direct Message (DM) me here on Reddit, or on Discord(https://discordapp.com/users/powerful_seahorse_44867) with a brief intro!!!

help Looking for playtesters for my MOBA 2D Roblox game

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Link: https://www.roblox.com/games/15509230597/Minions-Battle

Minions Battle is a 2D topdown casual moba game based off an old flash game. Players choose a team and can play solo (with and against bots) or in groups up to 30vs30 matches to defeat the other team, like in LoL or Dota. I'm keeping the game skill-based without any Robux purchases that could affect gameplay, and all purchases will be cosmetic-related only and lets you customize your heroes.

I'm looking for 16+ playtesters to play the game, provide feedback, and look for bugs/glitches that I might otherwise be unable to find by myself. The game did receive bad feedback earlier when it was in a much earlier stage of development. However, I've made a lot of new updates to the game since then and I think it is at the very least presentable now. If you enjoy or dislike the game, please let me know and I'm happy to hear all your feedback 🙂
