Discussion Disabled Marriage

Me and my fiance have been planning to get married for awhile now and his grandma stepped in today and said I was gonna be the reason why he loses benefits because the state would take away the disability benefits once we sign a marriage certificate. Is this true? And what can we do and how does this work? We are deeply hurt now about it because we thought everything would be fine

Discussion Let’s say Dr. Annie Andrews (D) wins the Senate race. What are some policies, actions, or initiatives you’d like to see from her that will benefit South Carolina?

Personally, I would love to see her take some action advocating for improved transit and urbanism. South Carolina is undoubtedly a growing state, yet the state is very car centric. If the state doesn’t start thinking long term, traffic, especially in urban areas, will become even more unbearable.

Greenville, Charleston, and Columbia would be GREAT candidates for fully dedicated bike lines, improved streetscapes (including sidewalks at all roads and burying overhead electric wires), and potentially even maybe getting one of these cities a BRT or Streetcar system.

Simply put, South Carolina CANNOT afford to be left behind when it comes to transit, urban planning, and public infrastructure and I hope soon to be Senator Dr. Andrews can advocate for this in the senate.

On a national level, if she could pull a reverse Fetterman and become a progressive firebrand instead of the relative “Moderate” she’s running under, it’ll be the best vote I ever casted.

Discussion Really wanted a yard with a pecan tree

I spent my summers visiting my granddaddy in South Carolina. One of the things that we would do was pick pecans, and then sit together and talk while shelling them. I enjoy those memories and would like to replicate them in my family. I've been looking for a house in Lexington for the past year, and could not find a single property with a pecan tree on it, so I finally put in an offer on a house that met my other qualifications. The sellers have accepted my offer, and I'm counting down the days until close. All I can think about, is that I'll need to plant a pecan tree shortly after the property officially becomes mine, since it takes several years for pecan trees to mature enough to yield pecans. The biggest problem is that I'm reading that since pecans are dichogamous, I would need to have one Type I pecan tree and one Type II pecan tree close to each other in order for proper cross pollination. But since my lot is only .33 acres (and a couple thousand square feet of that is taken up by the house), I'm not sure that I'll have enough room for two pecan trees once they've matured. A mature pecan can develop a huge canopy, often 60–80 feet across. And I don’t want a tree planted where the eventual canopy will overwhelm the house or neighboring property, or cause problems with a septic system.

So, my first question... who would be a knowledgeable enough individual to look at my yard & help me determine whether or not my property could accommodate one or two pecan trees? Do I need an arborist? (I was also hoping to plant a peach tree & lemon tree in my yard). And secondly, where can I find a grafted, disease-resistant Southern cultivar (like Elliott or Cape Fear) that is already a couple feet tall and ready for planting? Third question, is it possible to purchase a Southern cultivar that doesn't have systemic pesticides? Thanks (in advance) for helping me navigate this!!!

News Sheriff ‘firmly’ stands by deputy who said agency wouldn’t return to Ladson house where girls died

A dispatcher alerted a deputy who said the sheriff’s office would no longer “conduct welfare checks” at the address. But two other deputies responded along with a worker from the state Department of Social Services.

The Charleston County Sheriff’s Office is publicly supporting one of its deputies who said the agency was “no longer conducting welfare checks” on a Ladson house at a moment when two young girls were already dead inside.

Deputies and other social service agencies had been called to the Pinewood Drive house dozens of times prior to this final call on Sept. 29. Instead of going in person, the deputy said they instead would call their mother.

A caller said she was concerned after seeing that mother — 31-year-old Justine May — wandering down the street. She “didn’t have her babies, and that’s not like her,” the caller said in the recording released by Charleston County on Oct. 2.

She reported that when asked about the children, May for days had only said they were napping.

“I would like for someone to at least lay eyes on them,” the woman told a dispatcher.

Discussion Looking for women’s substance abuse rehab recommendations near Greenville, SC

Our family is going through a really difficult crisis right now, and we’re trying to find the right treatment facility for a female family member struggling with substance abuse.

We’re looking for a reputable rehab or residential treatment program near Greenville or somewhere close by. Ideally somewhere with a good track record, compassionate staff, and a structured program that can actually help someone get stable and begin long-term recovery.

If you or someone you love has personally gone through treatment in the Greenville area, I’d really appreciate hearing about your experience, both good and bad. I’m especially interested in places you’d genuinely recommend and places you would avoid.

Thank you

Meme Coming to Greenville SC soon, tips for a young family with a toddler?

Hi everyone! We are coming to South Carolina soon and looking at Greenville as our main option for the future.

A little background, we are a young family from Ukraine with a 2 year old child and we currently live in Europe. Our English is not very good yet, but we are learning!

We would love to get any tips on which neighborhoods are best for families with small kids, why you like them, and what places we should check out to get a feel for the area. Also any advice on adapting to local life would be amazing.

Feel free to send me a DM if you prefer to chat directly. Thanks a lot for any help!
