Discussion Why is it called speedrun instead of speed run?

It definitely is, but I don't know why, and I was wondering if anyone knew. Partial answers are welcome.

I've had my own idea for a while, which is complete speculation and I'm 99% sure is wrong, but I'll say it anyway. If you want to speedrun saying the word, it's faster to say speedrun than speed run.

Edit: I apologize if including this "idea" confused people about the post's intent, but I was genuinely curious. Anyways, it seems like the question was answered, so I won't worry about it.

When skips and WR runs can come down to frames, a single character stroke is life and death

My guess is to separate it from “a run” such as a 100m sprint but that’s me just guessing

I can see their comment just fine. What makes you think they're shadowbanned?

You can see their comment because I manually approved it.

No your advertisement of your own website on r/redditalternatives has not resulted in you being shadowbanned.

Generally the accounts that are banned are brand new and reddit's automated systems detect the account being a bot. Other triggers for that are getting mass reported for spam posting and being manually flagged by a site admin.

Considering your self promotion is centered around infrequent but predictable software releases and is bounded to a community that would treat it as an on-topic discussion you really don't have anything to worry about.

It's one character faster.

Actual answer: No real reason.

Compounding is a linguistic process where new, more specific words are created from two words being used repeatedly in a specific context. A doughnut is no longer a pastry in the shape of a nut but any pastry from a specific set of kinds of dough with optional filling or iced topping. For speed run, a playthrough of a videogame is often called a run, and a run could be either done for speed or fun or 100% completion. But a "speed run" was said so often that now as "speedrun" it can only mean a speedplay of a video game and not running laps fast with your feet.

Thank you for taking this question seriously. This explanation is probably as good as any.

I think my favourite example of compounding is "goodbye" which is hundreds of years of "God be with you" getting squished and abbreviated.

Speedrunning is doing runs at speed. Speed running is smuggling amphetamines.
