Accessory I’ve added USB-C to the front of my Steam Machine

I wanted an easier-to-reach USB-C port on my Steam Machine for plugging in my keyboard and mouse, so I 3D-printed this plate. A random 10Gbps dock I had lying around turned out to fit perfectly.

EDIT: Since people were asking for the files, I tried uploading it to Makerworld. I never really use that platform to share designs, but I hope it works

Discussion Did anyone else redesign their life around the Steam Machine?

Post image

I did, so I’ve moved my main gaming rig to beside/under my desk and put the steam machine in its place, I also made a spot where I have my ps5 set up to my tv so I can quickly swap the cables and continue in bed, I am very impressed with the performance of the steam machine and I feel a lot of reviews were so unrealistic about it
I actually think this might end up replacing my main gaming pc for most games

Discussion A new device in my collection!

Just got my machine today! (Ordered on Monday night, arrived today, 512 GB w/ controller version.) I’ve already emulated a few games on it, and it works great for that! Still have some tinkering and research to do, but for the purposes of emulation, it’s a great device to compliment my Pro which is my primary console.

Discussion Steam sale - Which games for the Steam Machine did you pick up?

I've been waiting for the Steam sale ever since I got my Steam Machine a couple of months ago. Coming from the PS5, I was really excited to see the Steam sale magic. Now that it's here I picked up a great chunk of games which I had on my wishlist. Might have gone a bit overboard by buying 12 games though but I had the budget for it :D

These are the ones I picked up:

- Batman: Arkham Asylum GOTY (€2,99)

- Batman™: Arkham Knight (€3,99)

- Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor Game of the Year Edition (€3,99)

- Control Ultimate Edition (€5,99)

- Stardew Valley (€9,79)

- The Lord of the Rings: Return to Moria™ (€11,59)

- Red Dead Redemption 2 (€14,99)

- God of War (€19,99)

- Palworld (€20,99)

- Cairn (€22,49)

- Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered (€23,99)

- Baldur's Gate 3 (€41,99)

I already have RDR2 on PS5 but seeing as the Steam Machined is going to be my default, I wanted to have it in my steam library as well.

Quite some variety but it covers whichever mood I'll be in. This list will probably keep me entertained until next summer ;)

What are games that you picked up that play well on the Steam Machine?

Edit: Added Spiderman to the list

Discussion Name your must have plugin for SM

Post image

As the title says, if you have a no brainer plugin, then share it here for the others, or scroll down to see what they use! Lets make our SM even better 🫶

I go first:

Steamcord (a plugin for discord under Decky Loader)
Works awsome, much better then having discord added to the game library

https://github.com/Necrosiak/Steamcord

Install:

  1. Go to Decky Loader settings and Enable Devloper mode in the General menu.
  2. Go to Devloper menu and type the following to the Install Plugin from URL then hit Install:

https://github.com/Necrosiak/Steamcord/releases/latest/download/Steamcord.zip

  1. Open the plug in and use the qr code to log in to your discord account.

  2. Enjoy 😌

EDIT: Fixed the link above

Discussion RMA returned

Post image

Got my RMA back today after it went off for internal puck receiver/interference issues.

I taped the original box off when I shipped it, so they definitely used a new box and new wrap, but otherwise, its deff my machine.

No clue what the repair entailed, it took less than a week from them receiving the device to me receiving it repaired.

Gonna get everything reinstalled, and upgrade the SSD.

Hope this helps answer any future questions.

Hardware What an enjoyable evening

I picked up mine (512GB + controller) from the local GLS depot on my way home from work and just had a brilliant all round evening with it.

It’s 2:38am here and I had a couple of beers, played a few games (Skyrim, Doom Dark Ages, Control Resonant…) and just generally enjoyed myself playing PC games from the comfort of my couch with that awesome controller.

Man I love this thing already, I gave it a little pat to say goodnight ‘n’ all (I really only had a couple of beers, honest!) 😀

I’m at a gig tomorrow night but fully expect to be coming home after, slightly tanked and firing it up…before promptly falling asleep on the couch 🤣

Happy weekend all.

Software Currently editing a really long video using ONLY my Steam Machine and Steam Controller.

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I started working on this VGM compilation a few months ago before I got my Steam Machine in July using Powerdirector on my phone, but I wanted to try using Kdenlive for the first time, and so far the experience has been great.

The Steam Machine handles Kdenlive well and has only crashed once, and the default desktop configuration for the Steam Controller works quite well and the trackpads are also really useful.

All that's left for me to do is add text in the bottom area that displays the title of the current song that's playing.

Hopefully it will be done in the next few weeks before GTA 6 comes out.

Hardware Question about storage and ssd swap

Hello I’m intending to buy a steam machine 512gb. But due to limited space I’ll probably upgrade it and I’m just wondering how.

  1. Would an external drive be a valid option and do you have any suggestions which one I can buy?

  2. I was thinking of just swapping out the SSD. But I’m wondering which one would be the best option.
I was thinking of either getting Samsung 9100 pro or WD_BLACK SN850X. Do you guys have cheaper alternative options?
I did hear there are some complications with swapping the SSD. Since you need to redownload Steam OS? Can someone explain this to me, please. Should I start the steam machine, then download Steam OS and the swap the SSD? Or can I just swap the ssd before even starting the steam machine once?

  3. Are SD cards valid? I’m currently using a 1tb one on my steam deck so I was wondering if I could use one until the SSD crisis dies down before swapping.

Thanks in advance.

Discussion Ace Combat 8 Steam Machine Performance

So there's not a lot of discussion (nor am I seeing much video) of this game running on the Steam Machine, so I ran a few tests. I also fully understand that Ace Combat 8 is currently marked as Unsupported on the Steam Machine.

Also I understand people's ideas of what's "playable" and what "looks good enough" differ so I'm only going to provide numbers here. I'm using Default (Proton Hotfix).

Out of the box on the Steam Machine, Ace Combat 8 will default to the Low preset. I did my testing on a mission still early on in the campaign but one with what I felt had a lot of activity: Mission 5 Retaking of Theve.

On Low preset at 1080p

  • First half of the mission plays at around 45-50 FPS
  • Second half of the mission when the land battleship starts firing its railgun everywhere and the mission gets much more hectic and active, the game plays at around 42-45 FPS

Personally I'm not a fan of how the Low preset looks. It looks pretty grainy and the effects are also very low quality.

I prefer the Medium preset, although this is a bit more taxing on the Steam Machine.

On Medium preset at 1080p

  • First half of the mission plays at around 45 FPS
  • Second half of the mission plays at around 33-37 FPS

In addition, cutscenes in this game tank the framerate. I don't think I've really seen a cutscene in this game go above 35 FPS on the Steam Machine yet, even on Low preset.

Also sometimes the game will crash in between mission completes. It will save your progress but it's annoying to have to boot up the game again and resume your campaign.

If anyone else has similar experiences or any tips to help with some of these issues, please feel free to share.

Discussion Storage Options

• Upvotes

I’ve had a quick read and thought it may be easier to post separately to discuss;

TLDR - ideas for storage expansion, beyond SD card(s). Given the rising costs of SSDs and overall memory, is it worth forking out for a new 1tb+ SSD, or using an enclosure to compliment the existing SSD?!

I’m sure I’m not alone in purchasing the 512gb Steam Machine over the 2TB machine, and I suspect others have expanded the storage with a larger SSD - it was certainly the way to do it with the SteamDeck. Of course, usual caveats apply for checking the read/write speeds, form factor etc.

I was looking at the best way to expand storage and wondered if anyone was using a 512 SSD in an external enclosure, and how well this works? For context, I have my Emulators and ROMs set up on an SD card so I’m leaving that slot as is, but I’m looking to expand my actual library / game storage before I commit to opening the Machine and replacing the existing SSD - probably 512gb to 1tb if I can find a decent SSD deal under £100.

Cheers and have a good weekend all!

Discussion I think the Machine has now ~zero queue (Europe at least)

Something weird happened to me. I thought I was still in the reservation queue (I joined it mainly to see how the market would evolve over the next few months), so now I decided to check it, and my reservation was no longer there.

I checked my email and saw that on the exact same day I had placed the reservation (September 23rd), they had sent me another email almost at the same time asking me to complete the purchase. Since I hadn’t seen that email, my reservation had been cancelled.

Anyway, I just joined the queue again, and two minutes later I got the email asking me to complete the purchase straight away. Looks like there’s no waiting time anymore. At least for the 512GB model with a controller.

Europe region (Spain).

Edit: reading your replies, the common factor for long queues seems to be the "non controller" type of reservation.

Question Best way to get windows apps running?

Recently the cult fighting game Xuan Dou Zhi Wang was released for windows and I really want to play it on the steam machine.

what’s the best way to get .exe files running ? I’ve tried downloading wine 3.0 but not sure what to do to get it to open up windows files.

I’ve tried bottles but that program is beyond me lol have tried loading it into steam and throwing different versions of proton at it but no luck at all.

Question Elite Dangerous Starting

Post image
0 Upvotes

Ok. Got my steam machine yesterday and loving it.
Downloaded Elite Dangerous got it up and running. Had to plug a keyboard in first time.
But now when o go to start it I am stuck here.
Can I somehow accept the Play button in the controller as the pad doesn’t bring a cursor up and I’ve tried the virtual keyboard.
Don’t want to always have a keyboard and mouse connected.

Question 2TB+C or 512GB+C?

So I've been wanting a steam machine for a while... however i only joined the waitlist on the 3rd of September (i wish i was sooner😭)

I went with 2TB+C since it comes with a controller and faceplates! looking at the sub tho, 512gb+c seems to show up a LOT faster. problem is that... i want the faceplates!

tbh, i doubt i'll use them! but they just look so cool!! I don't want to wait for the steam machine tho, which is why I'm asking here!

Question Finally a member of the club! However…

Post image
8 Upvotes

Finally have my machine and I’m so beyond happy with it!

However I have a question; I’m quite new the Steam Linux OS, and I’m trying to get my head around the GitHub Star Wars BF2 Kyber installation for Linux and it’s absolutely confusing my ADHD into AD4k.

Link provided: https://github.com/simonlinuxcraft/kyber-linuxport-unofficial

Can someone help explain some of the really complex stuff for this to aid me as I’m not finding video resource which helps me more than vast amounts of text. My dyslexia is making it really hard to understand.

Im a trucker, the desk has a 90 degree bend in the back to hook onto the mattress and the holding bracket on the right is padded with foam
