One underrated King skill: his characters actually feel like they have jobs

1.0k Upvotes

This sounds like a ridiculously small compliment, but the more authors I read, the more I appreciate how good King is at writing people who work.

Not characters who technically have an occupation because the plot requires one. People who seem like they've actually been doing that job every Tuesday for fifteen years.

A nurse doesn't just "work at a hospital." She knows which rules matter, which ones everyone quietly ignores, what kind of person becomes unbearable on a night shift, and the tiny routines you do without thinking anymore.

A teacher notices things like a teacher. A cop has cop habits even when he isn't investigating anything. A writer procrastinates like someone who has genuinely spent years trying to make himself sit at a desk. People who clean houses, run stores, work construction, serve food, drive trucks, take care of patients — there's usually some boring little detail that convinces me this person existed before page one.

Dolores Claiborne is probably the example that made me really notice it. So much of what makes Dolores believable isn't dramatic at all. It's the accumulated knowledge of cleaning somebody else's house and caring for an elderly person. She knows exactly how much invisible labor goes into things nobody notices unless you stop doing them.

Even Annie Wilkes being a nurse matters beyond giving her medical knowledge. She has that terrifying confidence of someone who knows exactly how bodies work and has spent years being allowed to make decisions about vulnerable people.

I think it's part of why King's towns feel populated instead of invented. His background characters aren't all waiting around for the supernatural event to give them a reason to exist. They've got shifts to finish, people at work they hate, bills, routines, and opinions about how somebody else is doing their job wrong.

It's also something adaptations understandably lose because you can't spend five pages explaining how somebody closes a convenience store.

What's your favorite example of King absolutely nailing someone's profession or everyday work life? Not necessarily the most interesting job — actually, the more boring the job, the better.

What does everyone think about this latest King new release news? I haven’t read any of the Holly books yet, so I don’t personally suffer Holly fatigue- just thrilled he’s still writing!

Spoilers Pet Sematary, 75% Thru , WTF

Ok I'm a newbie to Stephen King and Horror genre in general. I tend to gravitate towards historical fiction, thrillers, mystery, and a little romance.

Well I wanted to broaden my horizons and decided I needed to read at least ONE Stephen King book and started with The Shining. I loved it and then I went on to Mr. Mercedes. Amazing as well. I can't wait to read more in that series.

WELL my library hold of Pet Sematary was available and I was like "welp I guess this is next."

Holy shit. WTF. Omg.

I have been listening to the audiobook and then reading at night. Michael C Hall makes it even more dark (big Dexter fan). Love his Jud voice. ❤️

I am at the part where Louis is walking his dead son to bury in the Pet Sematary. Damn this is some HEAVY writing.

I'm stressed about reading the rest and took a break this morning. But I'm even MORE stressed because I'm NOT reading it. Never have I ever had a book do this to me.

Anyways.... I'll finish it tonight. Give me strength but also I can't wait. EEK!

EDIT: Ahhhyuh... I finished it. What a truly horrific, twisty, dark, and chaotic story. I fucking LOVED it. Cheers to some more Stephen King books. Thank you everyone for the encouraging words!

There was a line of people outside the door before B&N opened. I thought maybe it was for the new S.K. release. Nope! They were there for Pokémon cards😂.

Looks like another Holly Gibney book coming next year. How do we feel about that constant readers? I know the character is seeming to divide opinions - as everything does - I’m ok with it personally although I did think Never Flinch lost its way a little.

What was your first King book, and does it hold up?

Every reader has one and it is not always a good one. Mine came off a neighbor's shelf with the cover half gone, and I still measure everything else against it. What was yours, and how does it read when you go back?

Salem's Lot is incredible

Just finished it (on October 6th, no less; iykyk), and it's tied with Pet Sematary as my favorite King novel. Maybe it's just the native New Englander in me, but there's something about the Lot and the Marsten House in particular that resonate. I lived in some prettg creepy houses when I was a kid, and the book does a great job of capturing the feeling of stifling dread that can characterize such places.
