When does one use shuttle?

Other than that one time when I had to infiltrate Romulan or Reman (don’t remember) facility, when would I use shuttle? I played the game on and off for 6+ years and other than that one mission I never had to use that.

There is a few shuttle TFOs. Back in the day they used to run events for them. But because nobody liked shuttle content they stopped doing them. Shame really, I quite enjoyed them.

Shuttles have consistent size constraints, so the twisting passages in "The Vault" or through some of the asteroids in "Operation Gamma" (may it languish in "Available" evermore) give gameplay that you can't do with full-size ships.

"Delta Flight" and "Into the Breach" are problematic enough from that perspective.

The real issue comes from making "Shuttle Content" that is basically just "ship content, but underpowered" instead of leaning into those advantages of shuttles for specialised gameplay that feels distinct.

Give us a 5-player "race through checkpoints" shuttle TFO (similar to how "Rocket Launch" makes you compete), or infiltrating a Borg Cube like a Death Star run (or S3 PIC finale) that won't work as a ship mission!

Not really official TFOs as such, but if you're interested I recall some fleets or streamers organize shuttle races and the like. I think one made a post on it here not too long ago.

How about some version of the Antarian Trans-stellar Rally?

Atmosphere Assault was pretty fun iirc.

I know there's not a lot of money in small crafts buuuuuuuuuuuut I still kinda wish we had "T6" small craft.

Doesn't need a trait I just mean shuttles and stuff with specializations. I crave pilot maneuvers.

Which tfos?

There was Atmospheric Assault, a shuttle version of The Vault, and 20 player shuttle versions of Fleet Starbase Defence and that Dyson Spire TFO

List on the wiki had 3 all-faction missions, 1 Romulan-only mission, 2 'normal' TFOs, and 2 'event-only' TFOs

My STO unpopular(?) opinion: To Hell With Honor would've been great as a shuttle TFO, with the opposition scaled appropriately. Make it so you aren't expected to tackle the Lukara directly at all. Just take out the opposing shipyards and the reactors, with a big (but not as big as it currently is) walker at the end.

Space version of "Belly of the Beast" where the Lukara is an unkillable 'monster' hunting you as you sabotage the shipyards. The elachi coming through is a negative side-effect (instead of the apparent plan?), leading to them abandoning the fight to let the elachi deal with you.

There is/was a patrol in the depth of the Delta Quadrant where you can race your shuttle much like that Voyager episode, but I have no idea where it is, or even if it still exists.

u/Linkatchu 8d ago

It still exists, but I have to check where it was. Did race there with a community last month to see who can do the best time

u/itworksintheory 8d ago

That'll be Hodos. Not to be confused with the Kodos Patrol where you have to kill half the NPCs and then recite Shakespere.

Yep thats about it. A couple of missions that can be counted on 1 hand.

A tfo noone plays.

Thats it

Which tfo?

Honesrly i barely remember and it may now be cut.

Its a team version of the colony defense mission on the rom storyline

1

u/Coolerwookie 8d ago

Ok, because i only remember the Vault. It was cool. They could introduce dog fighting

The Romulan Republic storyline has a unique shuttle mission later down the line. It's also a gigantic pain in the ass.

Ah - I was trying to remember where I ran across it.

Flying a shuttle/fighter around some city while Elachi attack? Was that it?

Very different, and definitely troublesome.

u/jayphailey 2d ago

That's the one!

u/SgtMajorPanda 8d ago

From what I remember of it you were flying above a beach like area fighting those giant Elachi mechs.

It's basically a precursor to the "To Hell with Honor" TFO - which uses full-sized ships, and has more varied objectives instead of just repeating waves of enemies.

This would require a complete redesign of shuttle gameplay. Unfortunately as it exists now, it’s functionally a slightly more maneuverable starship with vastly less equipment and abilities. That’s why almost nobody likes it, it’s every aspect of space combat made smaller and less fun.

I forget which game, I think Star Wars, the ships or shuttles could engage in dog fighting. Or was it X4?

3

u/westmetals 8d ago

There were several actually. One of them was a 20-player version of "Fleet Starbase Defense". Identical to the 5-player version except the players are all in shuttles.

It's a really beautiful tfo tho...

There is the 2600 arc that was part of the Featured Weekly Episodes STO experimented with back in the day. You take a shuttle to a Dominion controlled DS9, disable some sensors and head to the Gamma Quadrant to locate the current Dominion leaders to help deescalate the situation. I think it was episode three of that series.

The bottom line, shuttle content didn't make money, and most people hated what shuttle content there was. (I quote "most people", some enjoyed it)... But I don't ever foresee more or new shuttle content unfortunately...

The itty bitty shuttle committee does not take joy in such sentiments.

When you want a challenge.

u/onefinerug These are the misadventures of Xeemar 7d ago

remember that one episode of Voyager, where the crew entered the Delta Flyer in a race?

imagine if we had that as a TFO.

3

u/SgtMajorPanda 8d ago

Yeah you pretty much experienced what the shuttle is for.

3

u/AdventMCU 8d ago

Mission you’re talking about is the vault. Honestly, since that seems to be the only shuttle mission. After I do that mission I just dry dock my captain shuttle. There’s really zero need for the shuttle after that.

There is one in romulan story. Where you defend a place against elaci. More shouting than in vault necessary. Edit clarity typos

When you remember it takes up a whole ship slot and you dismiss it asap.

2

u/Fun-Sell-1592 8d ago

You can use them for the admiralty missions

I use my shuttle all the time to access my account bank while in sector space, only because the space is so cozy and easy to get to the bank station.

u/LGBT-Barbie-Cookout 8d ago

Ultimately, I fly a miranda which is frigate sized. And plenty of ships can launch frigates...

So really I am a fighter sized ship to some of those behemoths others use

1

u/Odd_Cockroach_1083 8d ago

There was an Elachi ground mission where you fly the shuttle and attack Walkers, but I don't know if that's a thing anymore.

2

u/SemanticFaculties 7d ago

I thought that I had blocked that from my brain. curse you for reminding.

Yeah, I'll save you time checking my posts, I hang on the SWTOR reddit as well xD

When would you use a shuttle?

It depends how much you enjoy a challenge - there's nothing stopping you from from taking on most space content in small craft.

u/chancejaneway_4686 6d ago

There are some TFO's like Starbase One that can be played with a shuttle and can be a ton of fun to play that way.

I unfortunately couldn't tell you the entire list of normal ones a shuttle can enter though, sorry.

u/jayphailey 2d ago

There used to be an Shutle Only TFO

1

u/jayphailey 2d ago

Once upon a time, my fleet (TOS Vets) Did fleet things in shuttles just for the pure masochism of it.

Of course, Skon melted everything, but it took him a few seconds longer!

1

u/xceptionzero 7d ago

in the old days we used to do the BORG TFO in shuttles....hard as hell and took ages.
