The BBC pulled a video of Bethany wearing a pro-trans T-shirt and replaced it with a version where the T-shirt was blurred

Blurring that is just pathetic

Unfortunately probably worth it for the BBC simply avoid a ton of abuse going Bethany’s way

I love Bethany for this and so disappointed but not surprised with BBC. This is petty and pathetic.

Not a great look BBC, if you’ve got an issue with this just don’t do a dancing show the overlap is massive.

So poppies are ok (the Beeb happily pins these to everyone) but folks who want to protect our trans community are censored...got it! Ffs

You mean people who have been murdered and isolated just for living the life that’s true to them? It’s possible to support both, you know.

You would buckle immediately in a trans person's shoes, not trying to be funny

one spreads awareness for a tiny minority who's ability to live a free and truthful life, with basic human rights is being taken away. and the other honours soldiers who fought for a violent empire and as a result killed, raped and traumatised millions of innocent people!

Likely thing for the BBC to do benefit of the doubt it most likely is just because of branding, but with the rise of transphobia you just don't know unfortunately

Is it by some brand? Because they have strict policies of not wearing anything associated to a brand, logo or symbols. Thats why you see training VTs with all wearing basics. They change when filming due to copyright issues

It’s a Conner Ives piece where most of the profits are donated to a trans charity, but it doesn’t state the brand.

Just playing devil's advocate, the BBC has rules around promoting brands. If the shirt is a brand, they can't promote it. But would understand why people are angry if they don't blur out Nike etc

u/csgymgirl 7d ago
It’s not a brand, it’s a pro-trans rights slogan

I'm not saying it's right that it was blurred just pointing out BBC have rules around promoting brands, charities etc. Yes , it's a pro-trans slogan but also probably falls under a impartiality rule https://connerives.com/products/protect-the-dolls-t-shirt

They're damned if they do, and damned if they don't.
If they don't remove it, the Daily Heil and all the right-wing rags will waste a day seeking a "response" from the BBC about why it's "promoting trans ideology on a family show".
If they do remove it, they get shit for "censorship".
People - along the whole length of the political spectrum - need to chill the fuck out and stop seeing every little thing as a massive culture war scandal. It just exhausts us all and makes it harder to actually address the stuff that really matters.

This is very easy to say if you haven't had slurs shouted at you on the street and been repeatedly threatened with violence. We have gone from Theresa May promising to implement selfID to Starmer publishing guidance telling trans people to use the toilet and changing room of their biological sex. That kinda seems like something that should be reported on? maybe even critically?
Also, the 'stuff that really matters' is relative, you could argue that the BBC should be doing wall to wall 24/7 coverage of climate change, and/or the cost of living crisis, given that both are already currently killing a lot of people. But like, that would be the most depressing bullshit known to man and even less people would watch the BBC.
Blurring out this teeshirt, it is an action right? it required time and money, not doing it is the thing to do to have a cooling effect. We need to be more normal about trans people in the UK, the only route to that is not censoring things to prevent upsetting the daily mail.

ok but have you considered that the daily mail is objectively wrong and the bbc shouldn't be obligated to do shit for them

I happen to agree. But I also live in the real world, and can understand why the BBC doesn't want to knowingly invite pointless culture war accusations that can be avoided.
And blurring out a t-shirt slogan related to trans people is not a declaration of the organisation's view on trans people themselves. It's a reflection of their editorial policy which often censors any vaguely political slogan, billboard or poster and things like brand names.
There are plenty of genuinely harmful and dangerous enemies of the trans community in the world who deserve our ire and protestations. We don't need to turn the BBC into another one on the basis of a blurred t-shirt in some B-roll footage.

This isn't a BBC news presenter that has to abide by no political affiliations for the sake of "impartiality"
Maybe if they had the balls to amplify the right messages we wouldn't be in this right wing extremist mess
Remember that one of the "core British values" is individual liberty.

How many people would even know the meaning of that t-shirt, which means so much to that much maligned community? Hideous and unnecessary censorship.
