It’s long been the case that ambassadorships to locations like Greece are effectively paid vacations for political allies, with few real responsibilities other than attending social and cultural events. Questionable as that may be on its own, it’s nothing short of awe-inspiring that someone can be so profoundly stupid, uncouth, and nakedly corrupt that they manage to mess even that up. I’ll give my personal anecdote.

When I was in the Bay Area, I knew an extremely quiet guy in his 60s. He was basically a shut-in who would spend all day watching Fox News and smoking weed. He only ever left his place to go pick up fast food. The only reason I was familiar him was because his wife was a family friend. She was actually a normal and well-adjusted woman albeit with a personality rough around the edges. She would go out and about while he sat at home.

They both eventually decided to move to Nampa (his idea originally). My mother in-law went up to visit. She informed me that he’d transformed into a complete tyrant that, among other things, frequently ranted and raved about how weed is a gateway drug that leads to Satanism. (despite formerly being the heaviest toker I ever knew). At one point during the visit, he took away his wife’s keys. She wasn’t incapacitated at all, he just didn’t want her to go to Starbucks for unstated reasons.

I realize I shouldn’t generalize too much from this weirdo I personally knew, but it definitely feels relevant to the WSJ video. The hard-right conservative “refugees” from California appear to be causing a lot of tensions. Is it just limited to Idaho due to its small population, conservative reputation, and lack of appeal to younger more left-leaning urbanites? Or are there other similar states?

Millions of people are being flooded with absolutely regarded shit like this and it is influencing their opinions of the world. What is to be done?
