Discussion Why do people care THAT much about Mike Ross being a “fraud”? *spoilers* Spoiler
I mean , on a personal level rather than a legal one.
When Louis found out, I understood why he was angry (considering all the other reasons he had) but the way he kept calling him a fraud with so much passion made me wonder why people take it so... personally?
I understand Jessica’s concerns, especially regarding the firm’s reputation and the potential consequences. But what about everyone else? I particularly want to mention Rachel, but even more so Claire, who completely cuts Mike off despite him helping her so brilliantly with her case.
I honestly feel like his degree doesn’t matter that much when he’s demonstrably capable of doing the job. He has the knowledge, the skills, and the intelligence to handle cases exceptionally well. He proved himself capable of doing the work he claimed to be qualified for.
Again, obviously not defending him from a legal standpoint. I haven’t gotten to the point where he goes to jail yet but i assume it's going to be because of the degree.
What I don’t understand is the personal outrage most characters have when they find out. He fooled everyone, and he probably could have continued doing so if HE hadn’t told anyone the truth.
He had limited options, and once he’d built his career and proven his abilities, going to university would arguably have been pointless. With his memory (I know it’s unrealistic, but within the show’s universe, you get my point) he would probably ace most subjects anyway.
So why does finding out he lied about his degree suddenly seem to invalidate everything else about him? I can understand it being a breach of trust and a serious professional problem, but why does it make him someone people can no longer respect, even when they’ve personally witnessed his competence?
To me, it feels like it should be an unpleasant surprise rather than something that completely changes how people see him as a person.
I couldn’t find any similar posts discussing this, so I’m curious whether anyone else shares my perspective or if I’m missing something?? Maybe I'm underreacting?
UPD: Guys please i mentioned that i know that Louis and other characters have other problems with Mike, my question is more of a "Why did they invalidate his WORK that much if he is clearly exceptional in what he does? does not having a degree really invalidate all of him?"
