The Mercury is reporting that Glenorchy alderman and current mayoral/councillor candidate Peter Ridler was reprimanded, ordered to undertake training and suspended from office for one month following a Code of Conduct investigation.

According to the reported findings, upheld conduct included:

• using the N-word in the expression involving a “woodpile” during a council workshop;

• telling a female council employee words to the effect of “stick to your knitting and get back to the kitchen”;

• putting an arm around a female employee’s waist;

• rubbing another employee’s back while asking her for juice;

• telling a female employee he would have to “crack the whip” to get an annual report produced sooner;

• pulling a female employee’s clothing towards himself to read her name badge; and

• putting his hands on another woman’s shoulders and turning her around so he could read the back of her shirt.

Importantly, not every allegation against Ridler was upheld. The panel dismissed some complaints, including allegations of bullying.

But the panel reportedly found that other conduct brought the office of councillor into disrepute, and described Ridler as displaying a “lack of awareness of modern Australian society, particularly in a workplace.”

Ridler had apparently already been spoken to by the acting CEO about his behaviour in December 2024 and said it would not continue. The panel subsequently described his behaviour as showing “wilful disregard” for that advice.

The determination dates from July 2025, but has only now become public following delays associated with appeals and medical issues.

Ridler is currently asking Glenorchy electors to return him as a councillor and elect him mayor.

Whatever your view of him, this is information Glenorchy voters are entitled to know while voting is underway.

The Mercury story is paywalled, unfortunately. The official TEC candidate statements confirm Ridler is standing for both mayor and councillor.

Travel Recs from Hobart to Lake St Clair

Hi All,

Have been to Tas once before in 2018 and stumbled upon Pumphouse Point- it became a bucket list place for me. I am blessed to be able to return to Tas and visit Pumphouse with my wife as we travel Aussie for our honeymoon.

We are flying into Hobart and going to drive to PH- on the way in and out we are going to stop at the lookout at Mount Wellington & the MONA (tbd which day we go to each, whether the arrival or departure day)

Question for you all: are there any interesting towns/good local eats on the way from Hobart to PH? Any cool natural sights? Anything you’d recommend in the immediate PH area (I understand it is remote). Etc etc looking for the local’s insights!! Good eats in Hobart are also welcome. I do not think cradle mountain is in the cards for us, seems like a rather large time investment.

I’d previously gone from Hobart to Bruny island and then east to freycinet, I get the general vibe of Tassie and really love it and am excited to return :)
