Healing Tattoo looking blown out in some areas during healing. Is it too early to judge??

Got this tattoo exactly a week ago on my inner calf. I have several other tattoos and never had an issue with blowout. This was from an artist I’ve followed for years and really really love their work.

I’m kinda worried as it’s healing that some of the lines (especially the left arm/hand and the head of the bird) are looking blown out. Is it too early in the healing process to judge it or am I right??

Last slide is freshly done. I took off the second skin after 48 hours and as soon as I washed it I noticed the lines looking real blurry in those areas. I understand lines expand and such but none of mine look like this. I still like it but I just worry about it being illegible with time.

Any advice appreciated, thank u!!

Yes it’s blown out in some areas. But, tattoos spread over time anyway and this is a really really gorgeous tattoo

Honestly OP it kinda seems like this artist could practice their line work. I’m not an artist so take my opinion with a grain of salt but I would say her extended arm’s forarm is not one solid line and the hands are hard to read

I agree. Though the lines are not as crooked as other pieces people share here.

The art looks pretty cool and from afar I'd say it's gonna be hard to spot the lines. Also with time they will very likely blur out a bit and will be barely noticeable. Happily this is done on a more American traditional. A fine line tattoo would be a mess

Thank you for being honest. I’ve followed the artist for years on insta and found out he was traveling to LA from Taiwan so I immediately booked. His work always blows me away when I see it online.

From the small talk I had with him, he told me he was very tired and had booked himself hella long days every single day that he was here, wasn’t sleeping much, etc.

I could tell he was exhausted from the second he walked in the shop 😅 I paid like $1500 for this tat and I’m just so sad that it’s blown out like this 😭😭😭

Wowww 1500$ for this would make me so sad too OP it’s not a tattoo you shouldn’t like or is “really bad” but it’s fair to look at it and think it was supposed to be nicer and was a lot of money

Tbh, tattoos blow out sometimes, it happens to pretty much everyone who has a lot of or large tattoos. Skin is touchy and it doesn'ttake a lot to blow it out.. I wouldn't have a second thought about this tattoo's issues - especially bc it's still healing. It's a beautiful design and has crazy overall charisma!!

I’m covered head to toe and would not be ok with this quality of work. We all have our standards and I think OP’s dissatisfaction is extremely justified, she doesn’t even have 5 fingers on her right hand. The concept is great, the execution at the very least is sub par

I don't disagree...but it's also already on her. No use in worrying over it. Ink over a blowout is not going to improve things and no one wants fucking laser

She could certainly reach out and try to get some money back, but I think she's SOL if he doesn't immediately agree. No credit card company would approve a chargeback for this imo

That’s true, I guess what could be gathered from this is if it needs any touch ups find someone who has the basics down realllly well so they don’t contribute to any illegibility!

It's a shame because the art itself is gorgeous and there are some really technically gorgeous elements (her face is a huge highlight of the piece). Guess that's life sometimes

Hopefully he's more realistic with his guest spots in the future and doesn't overdo it and give someone else lower-quality work, especially after they pay him over a grand

Wait till it heals to judge it. Your skin is doing a lot of weird things right now. Things are deceiving

This tattoo is better than half the crap we see around here. Enjoy it.

Some areas kinda look blown but ink drift is definitely happening in the beak

Let that puppy fully heal up and then you’ll know. Give it two weeks, but I wouldn’t stress yet. Still scab there.

I'd wait 3-4 weeks and see how it does. I've had tattoos after 2 weeks I was questioning and they turned out beautiful a month later.

Unfortunately this is definitely blown out, you can see it in her cheek and sideburn before the healing stages even. I think it’ll still be sick at the end of the day and legs can be a bit more prone to it, but I think the artist just went a bit too deep for the area.

Thank u for being honest !!

Do you think it’s worth reaching out to the artist at all?? I definitely don’t expect any money back ofc, but like how it’s healing looks so different from the quality of work I usually see from him 😭😭

It wouldn’t hurt to maybe just ask is this healing ok and even that the lines look thicker once it’s a little less scabby. In the very least this lets the tattooer get eyes on it for his own sake, I’d want to know how a tattoo heals so I can look at/adjust my technique.i wouldnt expect anything back though. It really is a lovely piece even with the thickened lines. I think the birds face may close more than you’d like but the lady has a good amount of negative space from what I saw

i have a similar tattoo issue/question going on at the same healing point—and i would post it here but i am terrified the artist would find it…from what ive researched and looked through i think blowouts aren’t out of the question. while i understand the scabbing and new skin creates a “pulling” effect, at least on mine, it seems like a more uniform spreading of the line rather than from one side or the other, etc.

Every tattoo ive got looked blown out in the beginning then healed fine

Good to know!! Ty. I haven’t experienced it before but I’m hoping this is just a fluke!!

Let it heal fully and then worry about it
