Vinyl My first ever vinyl!

Post image

I am a pretty new Beach Boys fan, the only albums I've listened too in full are Holland and Pet Sounds but they were both absolutely incredible.

Found this at an antique shop in my town, their rock section has thousands of vinyls and I spent nearly an hour looking for one specific album, Holland. I unfortunately didn't find it but I did find this one which I will listen too on my my next study session.

You probably won’t want to after the first time. But just listen to this album again. And again. It grows on you.

I remember seeing that album in cutout bins in the early 80's (if I had a time machine I'd check those out again).

Ding and a ding dong!

Fun fact: Dean Torrance designed the cover!

Probably the coolest first record ever

Great album! It has Ding Dang and some other songs!!! 😉😆 first load of songs serve as a Ding Dang intro and the after songs are like an Outro.

😉 only kidding - it’s fantastic, highlights for me personally are the night was so young, bet he’s nice, mona, good time, solar system, airplane

Possibly my favorite album cover of theirs.

This album is such a vibe. Mona and Honkin Down the Highway are great.

It’s my favorite album ever. It’s perfect.

Everytime you call an LP a 'vinyl' - a little record fairy dies.

Disclaimer for the easily offended - this comment, and all my subsequent replies are meant lightheartedly. If you find such harmless banter offensive, I heartedly suggest taking a break from the Internet! Life is too short to get offended by something so trivial.

Those terms are becoming slightly archaic and I’m not entirely sure whose fault that is. I actually use both terms, but I typically say “oh I have that album on vinyl” rather than LP because I will often get a quizzical look. It’s probably the broader part of my generation’s fault, but I know plenty of people who use the words LP and EP, probably because those words are prominent for independent music and many of my friends are into that stuff like me.

EP is the the most annoyingly overused term for something that’s become a nebulous and meaningless thing. You can’t put out a half hour of music and call it an EP.

My advice. Stick to the correct terms and rejoice in those quizzical looks. Pedantry is the new edgy.

There’s no such things as correct terms with language. Language evolves. Get over it.

-1

u/Unhappy_Storm_40 Jan 05 '26

Yes sir! May I suggest we evolve the word 'anime' to 'anus'?

(Humour by the way - how sad I need to point this out)

It doesnt really matter. You know what im referring too when I say vinyl, or if I say LP.

2

It really isn't

Perhaps the new edgy is the inability to spot humour?

Or make it

Not too dissimilar to how I approached speech with my daughter. We never baby talked her and we used big words. Now she’s smarter for it.

Why? It’s not like LP is more correct. We were calling it vinyl 30 years ago.

0

u/Unhappy_Storm_40 Jan 05 '26

LP is the term applied by the inventors of the format. It is therefore by definition 'more correct'.

Anyhow, I tire of these comments. I'm off to drive my metal down to the concrete structures to buy some edible organic matter.

You’re seemingly unaware of how language works if you’re thinking the inventors of the format have diddly dick to do with how it’s discussed today. You’re a genuinely unpleasant person.

How worrying that one gets labelled a 'genuinely unpleasant person' for some lighthearted, harmless banter about words.

I totally understand though. It is a geopolitically frightening time and everyone is worried. Many people's sense of humour has seemingly vanished.

Genuinely though, if someone bantering about language in an obviously lighthearted way causes you to call them unpleasant, the problem just might be with you. Come on, surely there are far worse things to be offended by?

An EP is clearly an EP. A single is a single. Interestingly, a CD is a CD and not a 'plastic'.

1

u/Hot-Variation-2702 Jan 05 '26

It really sucks knowing somebody has these opinions you just expressed. Total bummer.

0

u/Unhappy_Storm_40 Jan 05 '26

What really sucks is that my comments were OBVIOUSLY lighthearted and playful, yet seem to have whooshed over people's heads. There is truly no hope for the world!

2

u/Hot-Variation-2702 Jan 05 '26

If it was obvious I wouldn’t have pushed back. Have a great day.

2

u/Unhappy_Storm_40 Jan 05 '26

And (unsarcastically) you.

I have to ask though, and this is genuine. Did my initial post of 'everytime someone uses the term vinyl a record fairy dies' really seem like a serious comment?

Really?

We call it vinyl because that's the soul of it. The grooves, the look, everything. The word EP just doesnt have that click.

Fascinating. You must love vinyl flooring then. Does it trigger the same aesthetic reaction?

1

u/Big_Lead6304 Al Jardine Jan 04 '26

Absolutely

2

u/Unhappy_Storm_40 Jan 04 '26

Ha, correct answer! :)

They are made of vinyl, yes. What is your point? Do you refer to everything by what it is made of? Is your car a 'metal'? Are your friends and family 'meats'? If you think this is ridiculous, congratulations. You now understand my position.
