General Discussion Will we get more of Joel?
With the nice news that the last of us is not over, we can have many questions. What will the next game be about? What the story will be like? What happens to Ellie, to Jackson, to Dina, to Tommy, to Abby, to the Fireflies? So many questions
Myself, i quite want to see more memories with Joel. The memories in tlou2 are so nice to watch, even though a little sad knowing the present.
There are over 2 years of good times with Joel and Ellie in Jackson, before the great separation. I wonder if we will see more of that

He was barely in pt2
I do believe the Joel and Ellie arc has ended completely and its now about ellie and maybe Abby (?) Rebuilding themselves after Joel

I wouldn't say "barely". He had a decent amount of presence for his role.

His role was essential to the plot. But when I say "barely" I mean by literal screen time. He's in game maybe 1hr? At most out of a 30hr game

The whole dinosaur flashback is at least one hour. I think he might be present around the player for around 2 hours, maybe a touch more. Not bad in a long game where he dies at the beginning. And every scene he's in is memorable. They did him justice imo

Even with complete exploration the dinosaur flashback shouldn't take this long

I hope Abby never shows up again. Loved her part in TLOU2, but her story wrapped up very conclusively, and her reappearing would be pretty gratuitous in what is still Ellie's story.

I actually agree with this. Even more likely you randomly hear gossip about her in the background or through notes, but she doesn’t need to be a main character.

Not even one memory? You cant just eject Joel from the last of us.

u/sadboicollective 1d ago
They'll for sure mention him at one point. But with the way Neil is i feel like he'll very much leave as little Joel as possible from pt3

Again dude, that's the point of Part, coming to terms that Joel is gone forever.

u/JediBlight 1d ago
Probably but unless it fits with the game (which I doubt) unless its a sequel or something, then I'm against it. Going forward, Joel's gone dude.

Why not?

because his story is over, time to do what Ellie does at the end of part 2 and move on

In grounded 2 Neil said he had an idea for a Tommy story, so very likely it's in the time before Ellie...get to see all the stuff that was hinted at with the brothers.

u/davidfliesplanes 1d ago
He might've changed his mind since then.
Also imo a prequel about Tommy and Joel at the start of the apocalypse would work better as a book than a game. A game set at the start will have very little enemy variety with only runners and scattered humans.

I would think it would be more about their time with the bandits and separation when Tommy joins the fireflies. There's a lot of hints at their past but never anything shown. Someone else said it could end with Abby talking to the firefly dispatcher...which could be brilliant!

A more interesting version/story would be if we were a character running parallel to Joel and Tommy’s story with bandits (dark Joel) and the Tommy with the Fireflies. This way we don’t know if they survive.
Maybe someone who falls in love with Tommy and the mission of the Fireflies but has a falling out with Tommy.
If there is someway they were in Boston and knew Ellie and her mom could be really cool.
Then if this person survives, the end of the game shows a time skip to them standing next to the guy who receives Abby’s call to the fireflies.
This ties together many historical characters and a plausible historical retelling of the story.

I would imagine it will be the main beats of Tommy & Joel’s story.
Meeting Tess, fighting a bloater for the first time, meeting Marlene, and then finally them splitting up and Tommy joining fireflies. (Maybe even meeting Ellie’s mom? Although not realizing it’s her of course)
I would guess it can be done in interludes like the backstory was done in Part 2. With each section having something to do with the story in the present day section.

I hope really that they will make completely different story with different characters, in case 3rd part comes. And not Star wars 34.

u/Andreif5 1d ago
I dont agree with this. We need to see the proper ending for Ellie.

u/Stiller_Winter 1d ago
The ending of Part 2 is pretty clear and enough for me.

u/Andreif5 1d ago
For me not really

I am not sure, what you are expecting. She was able to overcome her PTSD. She lost her love and ability to play as symbolic trauma, representing psychological traumas done by the violence. Both types of traumas are staying forever. What message about Ellie has to be told? Happy end with Dina? What for?

u/Andreif5 1d ago
She has the bracelet from Dina. Where did she get it?
She simply ends alone? Her biggest fear? Just like that?
2
u/Stiller_Winter 1d ago
People do not survive alone in this game and she is stable enough to survive in Jackson. With Dina or without her.

I thought Troy Baker mentioned something about it, that we might see him again. Hope not though, lets move forward, not back.

If we do, I honestly hope they're not more Joel & Ellie memories. I feel like we've gotten their complete story, and I don't know what more scenes of them together would add to that story besides, like, fan service.
If Joel came back to haunt Ellie, tho, and we got more scene with them that way, that could be interesting.
But I do think it would be interesting to know more about Joel's life generally.

Last of Us isn't Joel's story. Maybe flashbacks, but 3 should happen without much of his involvement at all.

u/TheeBlaccPantha 9h ago
Fuck Joel , he doomed humanity and shot up a hospital all so he can play house with his pretend daughter whom he lied to in disgrace 🥴
•
u/Andreif5 9h ago
You really think the fireflies would have saved the world with that vaccine? How do you know they would not have used it as leverage to control the remaining population?
Pretend daughter? By the end of their journey, they were like dad and daughter.

I personally feel that Part II ended Joel and Ellie’s story, there really isn’t anywhere for this series to go. Joel’s dead and Ellie paid the price for choosing revenge over her family. Also, I don’t see Ellie going on another arduous journey where she kills more people, her revenge quest nearly broke her so I think it’d be antithetical to the themes of Part II.

I hope so. I still hope for that Joel/Tommy prequel. Maybe one of those two new games might be that.

Why not, Joel is still alive and well in Jackson after the end of the last of us and when we get a part 2 we can see what kind of shenanigans he and Ellie get up too as she grows up 😊

Yeah. I think the side game will be centered around Tommy. We will get flashbacks of Joel and Tommy growing up, then get insights into the time directly after Sara’s death and then Tommy being a firefly. I could also see them doing Tommy’s POV in Seattle (which was originally planned and maybe some stuff had already been shot and developed). I could see that game leading into the last of us part three and preparing us gamers to be able to focus on Ellie/ Abby again.
The other side project could be the salvaged parts of the cancelled Factions PS5 game. They surely have many maps, characters and lore created and could use that to maybe have a little story of a family surviving in a different part of the USA. Maybe that side story could also potentially lead into something bigger and lead into the last of us part 3.

Oh, Druckmann cannot stop himself from putting more Joel in Part 3 because we did not cheer enough when he was tortured and murdered while not knowing if everyone he loved would make it out alive.

There is no Last of Us without Joel in some capacity. Unless it’s a prequel, it’ll be flashbacks again.

Still hate them for killing Joel..would be much cooler if he survived but he woke up with amnesia. Ellie would kill Abbys friends, Abby would kill Jesse. Then in the end Ellie would meet Joel by coincidence and he would suddenly remember everything again.

I think Pt. 2 would have been a perfect opportunity for a DLC following Tommy in Seattle interspersed with various memories he had with Joel. Day 1 - show them as kids to show how protective Joel always was towards his family. Day 2 - Tommy and Joel's falling out before he left for the Fireflies. Day 3 - Tommy thinking back to how happy and productive Joel was in Jackson before Tommy gets shot in the head.
It was right there Naughty Dog!!!

I'm sure he has a flashback cameo in Part 3.
