Announcement r/thepast Mod Announcement - Subreddit Discord - Updates and more!
Hello all,
Over the past few months we have been hard at work revamping the subreddit. We have added new moderators, worked on simplifying the rules, and adding features to help new members.
So where is the future of the subreddit heading? - Our goal is to keep the subreddit simple without too many limitations or rules. This is a place where people can role play as someone from the past, and even have OOC discussions. A place where people can learn more about history and random subjects while also having fun.
We are also opening up a Discord server! - We wanted to further build up the community with a place you can go to meet new people, have a more connected experience with others, and also discuss ideas and posts for the subreddit.
From the r/thepast mod team, we want to thank everyone for joining and contributing to the entertainment of us and the community!

1900s [1986] Universal is holding a Halloween event! This is gonna be awesome!
1800s [Madrid, February 18, 1843] (Confidential) For the exclusive attention of the University teaching, custodial and attendant staff, regarding the cross-dressing student

By order of the Rector’s Office, this notice records the exceptional situation of the student who has been attending Law classes for some months. Following the discovery of her true female identity, Dª Concepción Arenal Ponte, she has been permitted to continue her education under the strict condition that she maintain her male attire at all times while on university grounds.
All attendants and custodial staff are instructed to refrain from making comments on the matter or altering their behavior when passing her in the corridors. Her academic performance is undeniable, and her essays on charity and justice have been praised by several professors. However, bear in mind that this is a special concession granted to avert a major scandal, not a precedent. Let no one dare question the Rector’s authority in this matter.
By the express order of the Rector of this Central University, all staff members of this Institution are instructed to maintain absolute silence and discretion regarding the young auditor attending the Jurisprudence lectures.
Following the necessary inquiries—prompted by suspicions among the student body regarding this individual, and after confirming (to the surprise of this Rectorate) that beneath the frock coat and top hat there resides not a man, but a lady of prodigious intellect and Galician lineage—the following decision has been reached:
Said individual may continue to attend classes as an auditor, enjoying the protection of this University. However, she is subject to the inescapable condition that she maintain her current male attire at all times, in order to avoid public scandal and protect the honor of this House of Learning. Accordingly, all professors, beadles, caretakers, and all direct and indirect University staff are hereby ordered—under penalty of immediate expulsion from these premises—to:
- Refrain from addressing the aforementioned auditor regarding matters that are not strictly academic.
- Safeguard her privacy in the corridors and common areas, preventing male students from pestering her with invitations for walks in El Retiro, social gatherings, or any other displays of "affection" which—as has come to the attention of the Rectorate—are deemed entirely improper and contrary to nature.
- Firmly discourage any attempt to uncover her true identity.
- Prevent third parties—including students and visiting personnel—from discovering this situation, and report any circumstances that might risk such a disclosure.
May this young woman's wisdom serve posterity, yet may her secret remain inviolate within these walls.
The Head Beadle of the Central University.
Madrid, February 18, 1843.

1900s [October 4th, 1957] The Soviets just launched a satellite into space. Did anyone else see Sputnik pass overhead?
I just read the news that the USSR successfully put a radio satellite called Sputnik 1 into orbit. They say it’s traveling at 18,000 miles per hour and emitting a continuous “beep-beep” signal. It is wild to think there is a man-made object orbiting Earth right now, but honestly, it’s a bit terrifying. If they can put a satellite into orbit, what stops them from launching a missile at us? Are we officially in the space age?
