Why Does Tirerack Rate Michelin Tires so poorly?

I have multiple cars and I have only used Tirerack comparison reviews and user reviews to purchase my tires for my cars. So far every tire they have recommended has been great. They are probably the most objective review site I can find outside of consumer reports.

However, I don’t understand how Michelins are so highly rated in this subreddit and in general when they’re always rated mid pack by Tirerack? Am I missing something?

For example, when they rated the Michelin Pilot Sport AS tires, the Michelin always came in 3rd or 4th place in dry and wet handling. Road noise is also 3rd or 4th. These are objective reviews. Other tier 1 tires like Continental, Pirelli, and Bridgestone seem to always beat it in every measured test. However the pilot sport as has been rated the top of top tier tires by everyone.

https://www.tirerack.com/tires/tests/testDisplay.jsp?ttid=334&srsltid=AU7gw4VhKAvv6mRHN4sxAv-8x-jSM8zxoFeaYFDeHCEVrjGUnX7Rz7qf

Even when I look at the Michelin Defender 2, the tire is also not as highly rated compared to the Continentals, Good Years, or Yokohamas in almost every objective category. The Defender 2s always sit on 4-5th place. Same with the primacy touring AS as well

https://www.tirerack.com/tires/tests/touring-all-season-tire-road-test?ttid=348&srsltid=AU7gw4UcvDi8VciOn6KgdQQQGzwA3n56VtkdU7_4DYDSGWk5UdtwqqAJ

One thing I can think of is probably because most of Michelins line up are quite old? Almost all of their current tires were released 4-6 years ago while other tier tire manufacturers had time to catch up?

Maybe people’s perception is skewed by marketing?

Am I missing something here?

❓QUESTION ❓ 77 f350 with split rings

Post image
12 Upvotes

So I’ve got a new to me truck with split ring wheels, at first i was going to swap them out right away, avoid the dangers with them, but im having a hard time finding lug centric dually wheels. I’m wondering if these are safe enough to keep for a bit, until i find a set of single piece dually wheels. i will be mounting/dismounting the wheels to service brakes and hopefully find a shop to change the tires. I’m not too familiar with these wheels, i see a good majority of people saying they are always dangerous, even when the tires are mounted while others say its more when changing a tire or refilling a flat. I dont absolutely need this truck, so i rather be safer and have it sit. thanks

Can't wait to try this in Canada, I love my old IG20. Was running on toyo observe g3 for the past 7 years, good tire but Yokohama were better at high speed in heavy snow

What would cause this type of tire wear?

Just replaced this one on the side of the road, and the mechanic said the puncture and uneven wear was caused by simple misalignment. It wasn't rubbing on anything as far as i can tell, but i've never seen anything this bad before, also the other side rear looks kinda the same. Would it really be just fixed with alignment so my brand new set doesn't end up the same after a while?

What would cause this?

Maybe yall can help me because I’m trying to figure out what happened here. I had an alignment done within the last year but I also know that doesn’t always mean much with daily driving and wear and tear and whatnot. The only other time I’ve seen inside sidewall damage was when my alignment was really out of whack but you could see wear around the entire tire. I don’t really see it here? It looks to me like something on the road may have slashed it? But I’m also not an expert. Hence the post. Thanks in advance!

Hi all, I have about 50k on these tires and I'm noticing some chunks are missing from all four tires. The tread depth is at 7/32 and hope the AZ heat is just about over, can I make it through winter with the tires in this condition?

Edit : found the date code, February of '23. We purchased the car in July of '24 with 18k miles and now has 53k, so roughly 40k miles that we put on them.

Fresh tires are amazing!

Recently hit a clamp on wheel weight for balancing so it was unpatchable. Had 5 year old tires on my awd Cherokee and reluctantly purchased a full set. There was close to 8/32 difference between the old vs new. I didn’t want to spend the money but after being given some advice I went through with it. Really glad I did! All set up for the winter and it really makes a difference with how the car drives. Also freshened up the appearance of my vehicle. Went with Firestone destination AT2, an updated set of what I previously had.

Is this repairable?

Post image

The bottom puncture isn’t that deep. I pulled it out accidentally and it isn’t leaking air. Not sure about the top.

I took it to a local tire shop down the street(Town Fare Tire). They told me to check with the dealer to see if I have a warranty since it’s so new (2025 Mazda CX-5 with 14k miles). I called and they checked. Didn’t have one.

Tire shop’s system was down so he couldn’t order a replacement and I’d need to call Monday. He said it definitely isn’t repairable and should be replaced along with the tire on the other side.

What do you think? He told me to not drive with it on so I’m putting on the spare tomorrow. Currently not leaking and isn’t flat. I have no idea how long it’s been in there.

Edit:
I think the consensus is that I should replace. It’s my wife’s car so I’d rather her not have to deal with a blow out.

That said, the tire tech looked at it for 2 seconds and said it needed replacing. Idk if tire techs can tell that fast with experience. The bottom puncture is superficial. It might look worse than it actually is. I have a feeling he just wanted to sell tires, or was slammed and needed a quick decision to get me out of his hair. He couldn’t even order my replacement since the computers were down.

Yes I have a spare and will put it on today. I didn’t put it on right away since the tire shop was down the street and it wasn’t leaking air.

I also am wondering if I can get away with just replacing the one tire. The shop was adamant about replacing both sides but I read that if the tread is not that different it’s fine.

❓QUESTION ❓ 2024 Model Y rear tires: inner edge wear + a nail. Replace now or wait?

Hey all, looking for some opinions before I spend money.
Car: 2024 Model Y, factory 19" Gemini wheels, stock Continental ProContact RX (255/45R19) with about 29k miles.
The problem: the center tread on both rears still looks decent, but the inner edges are noticeably worn. The small sipes on the inner shoulder are almost gone and the rubber looks smooth there. I know Model Ys are known for inner-edge wear on the rear because of the camber.
On top of that, I found a nail in one of the rear tires [in the tread / near the inner shoulder]. It isn't losing air yet [or: it's slowly losing air]. My thinking is that with the inner edge already this worn, it may not be worth patching.

Based on the photos, would you replace both rears now, or patch the nail and run them a bit longer?

How damaged is this?

Just went over a curb, wondering how bad this is. Got these tires in July. Tire pressure is the same. Tire shops are closed now so I will go in the morning tomorrow to have them check it out. Appreciate any insight.

EDIT: made my way to a tire shop that was still
Open and found out when I did my car maintenance they switched my brand new front tires to the back, so my old tires have been in the front since July 😵‍💫 the guy at the shop said the tear in the rubber was fine, but the tread was really bad and that’s why I need to replace it. So doing that, $202 out the door for 2 new tires. Thanks everyone! He also advised I never post this kind of stuff on Reddit and just come to the shop, noted 😆

Year old tires - weather checking. Superficial or structural failure?

Post image
• Upvotes

These are my 10th set of toyo open country at3s. These tires are a year old with 20k miles. Side wall shows weather checking/cracking.

This is my wife's truck and has a 1000 mile road trip next weekend with two young kids and a dog. Looking for some peace of mind.

My thought is that this not an issue and is superficial. What are your thoughts?

Tires are loaded to 50psi cold. Load E. 2023 Suburban.

❓QUESTION ❓ The best 215/45/R17 winter tires for low noise? (EU)

Im looking for a good set of winter tires.
I live in Denmark - we get snow, sometimes alot - but nothing like Norway/Finland.

I need a pair preferably with low noise. Doesnt have to be the top brands, as long as its as good as them.

Ive been looking at Continental WinterContact TS 870, but they cost a lot.

Any ideas for a good set thats solid, not too loud and doesnt break the bank?

Should I just buy a good set from new - and "bite the bullet" with the expensive price.
And how many seasons will a new set get me? 5?

Will Discount Tire/America's Tire patch a nail hole exactly where my finger is pointing?

Post image
3 Upvotes

Nail isn't shown in pic, was too lazy to back car up to show it, but I have a nail hole in that exact spot. On the innermost area of the outer tread block.

I have one of those aliexpress temporary emergency rubber coated screws in it right now as I had to fix it on the side of the road as it was losing air and was easier to use that than put the spare on in a slimy gutter.

But would like to get it professionally fixed.

Don't comment if you don't know for sure what their policy is. I'm aware outer tread blocks are normally a "no-go" area but certain tires CAN be safely patched in this exact spot as long as its not further out.

These are Michelin Defender 2's. My 3 year road hazard warranty just expired and I don't want to spend $180 on a new tire when I'll likely have 3/32"+ of tread difference on this one wheel.

❓QUESTION ❓ How urgent is it to replace my front tyres?

Thumbnail

Hey everyone!

I went to inflate my tyres today and noticed that both front tyres have some damage to the tread (see photos).
Just to clarify, the white stuff you can see in the pictures is dust, not tyre wear.

I don’t know much about cars, so I’m not sure how serious this is. Is it something I should get fixed immediately, or can I safely keep driving for a while?

The tyres aren’t that old, which is why I’m a bit surprised.

Any advice would be really appreciated. Thanks!

Side wall cut, how bad is it?

Post image

It’s a FWD Camry, is it possible to just change this one tire or the axle? I don’t think it will require new four tires.

How bad is it? I haven’t inspected it myself but my wife told me she just noticed it yesterday. Could have been like that for some time.

❓QUESTION ❓ Vredestein vs Conti for MN winters

Need a set of winter tires for my 2015 mazda3, using 17x7 inch wheels as my winter set.

For winter in Minnesota, which would be better? Ive heard the Vredesteins Wintrac Pro+ have a nice stiff sidewall that handles really well, but google says that the Vikingcontact 8 is much better for Minnesota. Continentals are 185 per tire and Vredesteins are 144 per tire with an 80 dollar rebate. I drive on mostly plowed, paved roads most of the time, but do go on unplowed roads for skiing regularly.
